Artist bio:
Eleanor Conover is an artist whose work engages with the physical and material conditions of painting as a metaphor for environmental time and space. Recent exhibitions include a solo presentation with Abattoir at Independent, NY; Halsey McKay, East Hampton, NY; Caldbeck Gallery, Rockland, ME; Abattoir, Cleveland, OH; Praise Shadows, Boston, MA; White Columns, New York, NY; and Bad Water, Knoxville, TN. She was the 2022 Donald J. Gordon visiting artist at Swarthmore College and was the 2020-21 recipient of the Wellesley College Alice C. Cole ’42 fellowship. Her practice has also been supported through artist residencies including The Tides Institute, The Sam and Adele Golden Foundation, and Hewnoaks. With an interest in land and the environment, she has additionally engaged in the research of geologic histories in Philadelphia, PA and visual work regarding ecology in coastal places as remote as the Aleutian Islands, AK. Born in Hartford, CT in 1988, she earned an MFA at Tyler School of Art, Temple University (2018) and a BA from Harvard College (2010). She received a post-MFA teaching fellowship at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and currently lives and works in Maine, where is an Assistant Professor of Visual Art at Bowdoin College. She will have her first institutional solo show at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art in 2027 by @______pond______

Pond Gallery, in collaboration with the School of Art (SoA) at the University of Arkansas, is pleased to announce Down East, a group exhibition featuring nine artists living and working in and around coastal Maine. Guest curated by SoA faculty member Marc Mitchell, the exhibition introduces their work to Arkansas for the first time.

Down East brings together artists who share a deep reverence for both the history and landscape of coastal Maine, exploring its enduring influence on those who call it home. Through painting and sculpture, their work reflects a profound knowledge of, love for, and stewardship of place. Though geographically distant, Mitchell draws meaningful connections between the artistic traditions and sensibilities of rural Maine and the Ozarks, inviting us to consider how seemingly disparate communities can find common ground through landscape, tradition, and home.

Join us Friday, August 28, from 5:30-8PM to celebrate this special moment!
