I used to love shooting vertically, but lately I’ve found myself gravitating more toward horizontal compositions. There’s just something about capturing the full scale of a landscape that I’ve been appreciating more.

Which do you prefer, the horizontal shot I just shared or this vertical shot? 📸

Right Where I’m Supposed to Be

For years,
I’ve carried a photograph in my head.

I’ve made countless attempts to capture it,
and every time, something has stood in the way.

This night, I knew before I even went out
that the vision would have to wait another year.

Still, I went.

I didn’t want a timelapse.
I didn’t need hundreds of frames.

I wanted one photograph.

One moment where everything aligned.

For nearly three hours,
I sat beneath the clouds,
waiting for a sky that refused to open.

I kept asking the mountains,

please, just one shot.

One chance to capture something.

I even found myself imagining
I could blow the clouds away,
but they seemed to stretch for miles.

Still, I waited.

And even if I walked away with nothing,
I knew I’d still be happy.

I was sitting in the darkness,
beneath the night sky,
in a place I truly love.

Sometimes that alone is enough.

I only had a small window.

The Milky Way was disappearing
behind the rock wall,
taking the possibility capturing a shot with it.

So I packed everything away
and started walking down.

A few yards later,
I looked up one more time.

There it was.

The clouds had opened.

The Milky Way was pouring through.

Almost as if the mountains
had heard me after all.

I pulled my camera back out.

I stopped searching for the photograph
I had spent years imagining
and started looking at what the night
was giving me instead.

And I found this.

A perspective I had never considered.
A composition I had never seen.

The moment I captured it,
I knew I had something special.

I still haven’t captured
the photograph I’ve been chasing for years.

That vision stays with me.

But had everything gone according to plan,
I wouldn’t have been standing here.

I would have never seen this perspective.
Never found this composition.
Never captured this moment.

Maybe the night didn’t keep me
from where I was supposed to be.

Maybe it put me there.

This wasn’t the photograph I wanted.

It was the photograph I needed.

And suddenly, something
a good friend once told me
hit a little differently

I’m always right where
I’m supposed to be.

For years, most of you have followed this page without really knowing me & what I look like, and that was intentional.

I’ve always preferred being behind the camera. I liked being anonymous.

It wasn’t that I didn’t want my name to be known. My name is what I carry. I just never cared about being recognized. I wanted my work and the way I lived to speak for itself.

So I figured it was finally time to tell you a little about who I am & show the face behind the lens.

I’m a son to two loving parents who shaped the man I’ve become.

As a kid, I was a wild child. If I wasn’t going fast or doing some kind of activity, I wasn’t having fun. I wasn’t in the mountains yet, I was riding quads, dirt bikes, snowmobiles and jet skis, really letting the engine eat.

I can thank my father for that. He had me on the back of his Harley doing 100mph before I was even 10 years old.

My mother made me a dreamer. She taught me to follow my passions and do what I love. Both of them showed me what hard work looks like. That bled into everything I became.

Sports and wrestling only strengthened it.

At my core, I’ve always been curious about what’s possible.

Can I do it? What am I capable of? How far can I take this?

That curiosity has taken me into the mountains, down big lines, up walls, behind a camera and across the world.

Sometimes I succeed. Sometimes I fail. But I fuck around and find out.

I’m not a brand ambassador or sponsored athlete. Nobody is paying me to do this, capture these moments or write about them.

I do it because it’s my passion.

Because I fucking love this shit.

I’ve never wanted a mediocre life. I get one shot at this, and I want to find out what I’m capable of while I’m here.

I’ve always wanted to leave my mark.

Not because I want to be recognized. I want my name and the things attached to it to mean something.

A photograph. A story. A memory. An impact on someone.

Something that lasts beyond me.

Something eternal.

I’ve spent years showing you what I do without really showing you who I am.

Well, this is me.

I’m Nick Santos.

Still that wild kid. Still a dreamer. Still curious about what’s possible & I plan on spending this life finding out. by @___nicksantos___

The colors were incredible this year, and seeing someone out on the water surrounded by all that foliage made for a pretty awesome scene to capture.

Finally got the STAPLL 56L storage box mounted on my Tacoma, and I’m stoked with how it turned out!

I’ve now got a dual storage setup, with the original storage compartment on my Scout Yoho camper and the STAPLL 56L box mounted directly below it.

My first impression is I’m really happy with it. This is going to allow me to carry even more gear, tools, and equipment while keeping everything organized and easily accessible.

Being in my camper as much as I am and constantly being on the move, I’ve learned just how quickly the little things start taking up space. Whether it’s in the backseat of my truck, the Scout storage compartment, or inside the camper itself, things add up fast. Having a dedicated place for everything makes a huge difference.

What you see in these photos is just a fraction of what I’ll eventually have stored in this box. I’ve still got plenty more to add, and I’m looking forward to getting everything organized exactly how I want it.

Beyond the extra storage, I absolutely love how it looks on the truck. The black tactical design fits my setup perfectly and gives it that rugged look I really like.

Excited to put it to use through all four seasons and see how it holds up on my adventures.

Big thanks to Charlie and @stapll.co for getting me set up. 🤙 by @___nicksantos___

One of my favorite things about fall in the White Mountains is seeing all the different colors scattered across the mountainsides. The exposed granite cliffs surrounded by the changing foliage make for some incredible scenery this time of year.

I’ve spent a lot of time out in the mountains this fall, chasing the changing colors and watching the landscape transform almost daily. Some mornings the conditions come together perfectly, while others surprise me with something I never expected.

What I enjoy most about photography is that there’s always another perspective to discover. I can return to the same area countless times and still find something I’ve never noticed before.

Autumn doesn’t last long here in the mountains, and that’s part of what makes these moments worth capturing. Before long, these vibrant forests will be bare, the waterways will begin to freeze, and winter will take over.

Here’s the vertical shot of Mount Eisenhower that I previously shared horizontally a few days ago.

It seems like more people preferred the vertical version of the last shot I shared, and I can understand why. Most of us are viewing Instagram on our phones, so when a photo fills more of the screen, it naturally draws your attention.

I still personally prefer horizontal photography because I enjoy seeing more of the landscape, but I can definitely appreciate what the vertical perspective brings to this scene.

One of my favorite things about being in the mountains is watching the landscape constantly change. Fog drifting through the valleys, clouds moving overhead, and sunlight finding its way through.

Sometimes a few minutes is all it takes for a familiar landscape to become something completely different. Moments like this never get old. 🍂🏔️

Some days are just better because of who you get to share them with.

When you came up early in the week, we didn’t have a whole lot of time together, but we definitely made the most of it. We spent the day driving around, enjoying the fall colors, and stopping at a few different places along the way. Of course, you wanted to stop for snacks, and out of everything you could’ve picked, you chose a whole block of cheese. 😂 I’ve never seen someone so happy with a block of cheese, but you sure did love that thing.

One of my favorite parts of the day was getting to show you a spot you’d never been to before. While everyone else was out at the popular locations, we had our own little oasis all to ourselves. Those are the kind of places and moments I enjoy most.

Getting to see winter and fall colliding in the mountains was something I’ve wanted to photograph for a long time. It was a bucket list shot for me, and having you there with your camera made it even more special. We both got to capture something incredible together, and I think that’s what I’ll remember most about it.

I’ve spent years exploring these mountains, and a lot of that time has been on my own. I love those solo adventures and always will, but there’s something really nice about having you there to share these experiences with. Especially when you’re just as excited to pull out your camera and capture what we’re seeing.

We both walked away with some beautiful photographs, but the best part of the day was simply getting to spend that time with you. Driving around, laughing, exploring different places, and enjoying whatever we came across along the way.

It was a pretty awesome day, from the incredible views to your block of cheese, and I’m glad we got to experience it together. ❤️
