Lives cut short, Nini and Carry Hess.

Nini and Carry Hess rediscovered - two outstanding photographers from the Weimar Republic. Exhibition at the Giersch Museum in Frankfurt am Main.

The retrospective at the Museum Giersch der Goethe-Universität introduces two outstanding Frankfurt artists of the Weimar Republic—the photographers Nini (1884–1943?) and Carry Hess (1889–1957). Featuring some 120 original photographs supplemented by various archive material, it is the first to provide an exhibition of the biography and work of the two sisters whose lives and careers were destroyed by the National Socialists on account of their Jewish descent.

From my series on the fluidity of self and place.
In the reflections of Istanbul, I dissolve into the landscape — becoming both observer and fragment of what I see.

The Camel's Cry

Sadly, even today, animal abuse continues to exist in many countries around the world. Egypt is no exception. Camels, horses, donkeys, dogs, and cats… it breaks the soul to see them suffer. Many are treated as objects, as merchandise—without respect or affection.

But kindness exists too. There are also people who recognize these animals as living beings in pain, not just tools for work. Along my journey, feeding every animal I could, I met many dog and cat lovers who gave me hope.

This leaves me with the belief that, insha’Allah, real change is coming.

The Giza 2030 Project includes, among many other initiatives, a ban on the use of animals in the archaeological zone and on the routes to the pyramids.

Hopefully, this is just the beginning.

In this series, I alternate between animals that broke my heart and people who have a big heart—because I truly believe a great person can never be indifferent to the suffering of animals.

1.Camel, Giza.
2.Camel, Saqqara.
3.Horse carriage, Giza.
4.Horse under the sun, Saqqara.
5. Puppies in the Coptic quarter, Cairo.
6.Cat lover, Cairo market.
7.Cat lover, Al-Rifa'i Mosque, Cairo.
8.Dogs, Karnak Temple, Luxor.
9.Dog on the desert road.
10.Bomb detection dog, (one of the lucky ones), Cairo.

Salvador is one of those places that stays with you — colourful, loud, warm, and full of life.
At Igreja do Bonfim, the railings are covered with thousands of colourful ribbons, each one tied with a wish.
I liked this detail: a little chaotic, a little mysterious, and very Salvador.

„It is not the right angle that attracts me, nor the straight, hard, inflexible line... What attracts me is the free and sensual curve.“ — Oscar Niemeyer

To photograph is not to record the world, but to interpret it. I have always been fascinated by architecture, but capturing it in Brasília is a unique test of perspective—balancing monumental scale with a quiet desolation between utopia and dystopia.

In this third part, the dialogue between steel, light, and devotion takes center stage:

• „Eu ♥ Brasília“ Sign & Fountain: Located at the base of the TV Tower, this iconic landmark frames the city’s vast horizontal skyline.
• Torre de TV de Brasília: Designed by Lúcio Costa, this 224-meter steel lattice structure offers a raw, industrial contrast to the city’s smooth curves.
• Brasília Palace Hotel: Designed by Oscar Niemeyer in 1958, blending horizontal architecture on pilotis with Athos Bulcão’s blue-and-white tile murals (azulejos).
• Santuário Dom Bosco: A breathtaking sanctuary filled with 12 shades of blue stained glass, honoring the saint who famously predicted the birth of Brasília in 1883.

Brasília: where utopian architecture meets everyday reality.
Documenting Oscar Niemeyer’s iconic shapes was a challenge in scale. The vastness of the space makes you feel tiny, yet human presence—a vendor’s umbrella, a passerby, a bird on a statue—gives life to all that concrete.
In this second part, the focus shifts to the Cultural Complex and the monumental axis:
• The Cathedral of Brasília: Designed by Oscar Niemeyer with 16 concrete columns, its hyperboloid structure reaches upward while most of its sacred space remains hidden underground.
• The National Museum: A massive, 80-meter white dome paired with an iconic curved ramp, standing like a futuristic sculpture in the open space.
• The Esplanada dos Ministérios: A strikingly uniform sequence of 17 identical buildings, capturing the repetition and geometry of planned power.
