Dying on the Page: Present Tense Day Five, Sunday 11 October 2026 @raleighchapel → Bianca Pina @bianca___pina will help close our five days of Field Studies: Present Tense with Dying on the Page, a session that asks how a practice stays alive through the process of death.

Dying on the Page considers what we need to hospice, put to rest, or let die in order for our practice to live. Each death, on the page, makes way for something newer, more original than the previous draft. Together we will weave a death basket of words, using the page as stage, altar, coffin, last statement, final request and invitation to the afterlife. We are not interested in death as an end or disappearance, but in what happens when something is put through the perfect machinery of death and allowed to change form. The public eyes of our peers become a collective soil, helping break down the bodies of what we shed and return them as nutrients.

Bianca will share diagrams, poems and advice from elders (Morrison, Notley, Weil, Baldwin), guiding the group into descent. Through writing and a collective cremation, we will grieve our way back to life.

Present Tense Days One and Three, Wednesday 7 & Friday 9 October 2026 → We are delighted to welcome artist and architect Marf Summers @marfsummers to Present Tense with Cold Bridge, a multi-sensory exploration of trans embodiment through a contemporary folk horror lens. Colliding the mundane and the sacred, the performance thinks around the limits of language and calls meaning itself into question. On Day Three, Marf returns to Present Tense for an artist's talk.

Wednesday 7 October 2026: Performance, 7pm, Present Tense @___presenttense – Tickets on DICE, event info on field-studies.org

Friday 9 October 2026: Artist's talk, 12noon, Present Tense – day and residency passes via field-studies.org and info@field-studies.org

Marf Summers (b. 1991) is an artist and architect whose work is primarily sculptural and performance-based. Their current body of work uses Neolithic prehistory as a portal to explore contemporary trans experience within a deep-time landscape. Their sculptural work is site-specific, using vernacular architectural 'failures' as sculptural methods to conjure up pictographic bodies and symbols that recall chalk hill figures, ancient cave art and late 20th-century graphic languages. Past performances have celebrated the ancient craft of flint knapping, with the artist home-cooking 4kg boulders from sugar, which are then knapped into sharp tools, and eaten. by @___presenttense

Present Tense Day Four, Saturday 10 October 2026 → We are so pleased that Berlin-based writer Martin Sigler @mor__sure is joining our Saturday programme with a workshop at Present Tense (2pm, Newington Green), followed by an evening performance at Raleigh Chapel (6pm) with multidisciplinary artist and composer Damsel Elysium @damsel.elysium.

Drawing from his book I Am the Performative Object, Martin’s afternoon session asks participants to create a poetic object. Beginning with the chair as an object that holds memory, intimacy and experience, participants will write from encounters with chairs before working in pairs to imagine a new poetic chair for one another: an object at once attractive and unsettling. Writing, drawing and description become ways of looking again at objects, building a collective vocabulary that will eventually be gathered into a zine. Later that evening, Martin presents a new fable exploring collection, preservation and adaptation at a time when the world is facing a host of realities that end in ‘-cide’. Using prose poetry to bring this present reality into the room, Martin will be accompanied by Damsel Elysium, his artistic collaborator of recent years, who will create an original, semi-improvised soundtrack for the work.

Workshop: Create a Poetic Object for Someone @___presenttense, Newington Green, 2pm, Saturday 10 October. Day and residency passes via info@field-studies.org or field-studies.org

Martin Sigler + Damsel Elysium @raleighchapel, 6pm, Saturday 10 October. Tickets on DICE via field-studies.org

Martin Sigler is a Berlin-based writer specialising in culture, philosophy, and identity. His work focuses on the everyday, offering pragmatic approaches to how Black individuals can emancipate themselves today. +++++ Damsel Elysium (they/them) is the solo project of UK-based multidisciplinary artist, multi-instrumentalist and composer Djenaba Davis-Eyo. Working across sound, video and performance, their intuitive and improvisational practice explores the body, space, object and the metaphysical, drawing on somatic techniques, ancestral knowledge and the subconscious.

Present Tense Days 3 & 4: A Notebook of Gestures → Lalu Delbracio @lalu_delbracio invites us to think about the space between documentary and fiction, where poetics can crack reality open. During the workshop, she will share fragments of her process on Siesta (La Hora del Sol), a kind of ode to the sun as a life-giving, life-taking force. Starting from text, participants will move into looking, collecting gestures wherever we find them, to create an edit of reality together. Tuning into the poetics of gestures becomes a way of finding a path through the concreteness of reality, connecting with the sensuality of the world. Looking as a form of attention, attention as a form of devotion: both personal and relational at once, our hungry eyes taking in the world to keep us alive, never without conflict. Participants are invited to continue collecting gestures across the week, toward a collective notebook of gestures by our stomach-eyes.

Workshop and Screening, Present Tense, Newington Green, 8 & 9 Oct 2026 → More info on day and residency passes on field-studies.org or apply via info@field-studies.org

Lalu Delbracio is an artist working with performance, installation and photography. Her artistic practice unfolds through live action, material process and duration, exploring questions of time, transformation and embodiment, often shaped by ideas of queerness and ecology. Alongside this she is a Senior Lecturer in Photography at the London College of Communication. She lives and works between the UK and Uruguay. by @___presenttense

Present Tense Day Four, 10 Oct 2026 → Materialising the social → Present Tense residency, day pass, and evening ticket holders can participate in a collective performance with Taiwanese sound artist Lin Chiwei @linchiweiphotostock at @raleighchapel.

For more than twenty years, Lin Chiwei has been making scores that are not written instructions but protocols, objects and devices: ribbons embroidered with syllables, knotted cords, strings of coloured beads, grid systems. The rules are carried by the thing itself and passed from hand to hand. No single performer ever holds the whole. Rather than specifying sounds, Chiwei’s scores set up a shared temporal framework in which music emerges from rhythmic entrainment, bodies falling into time with one another, becoming conditions for other bodies. Every participant is at once a node in a distributed process and a listener interpreting what reaches them from their neighbours. A dense, stochastic mass of sound gathers, slowly and continuously evolving as the performers reinforce certain patterns and let others fall away, in an ‘effective form of collective computation’. The result is unpredictable and it emerges, in Chiwei’s words, ‘through the tension between rule and interpretation, constraint and contingency’. Overflow, deviation and improvisation are preconditions of emergence. The rules exist only while they are being enacted, and what matters is not the perfection of execution but the process of a group finding its own time.

To learn and perform Lin Chiwei’s tape scores is a unique and transporting experience. To take part, no specific skills or musical experience are needed.

Edka Jarząb: The Autobiography of the Voice at Present Tense, Days One to Five → Sound artist, activist and long-time collaborator of Field Studies and its parent network Musarc, Edka Jarząb @edkajarzab will be joining Present Tense with a workshop, a series of warm-ups, interventions, and an evening performance tuning into the bodily, social and political nature of the voice.

The Autobiography of the Voice begins from a simple question: what is a voice allowed to be, and what would it mean to reclaim the conditions of its existence? The project grew out of several fields of practice: empowering choral methods, collective singing, vocal warm-ups developed and used during street demonstrations, deep listening, reflections on the sonosphere, and experiments with voice, radio waves, field recordings and the extended body. Rather than treating the voice as an individual instrument, it approaches it as a relational phenomenon. A voice is produced by a body, but it is also shaped by language, social expectations, architecture, technology and power. The project therefore asks how our voices are disciplined before they even become speech: through ideas of an ‘ideal’ timbre, correct pronunciation, accent, vocabulary, gendered vocal behaviour, acceptable volume and emotional expression. What happens to voices perceived as too loud, too angry, too low, too broken, too foreign or simply inappropriate?

Edka’s workshop takes the form of a collective autobiography: a gathering of personal vocal histories, exercises, recordings, conversations, collective singing practices and public interventions. Individual experiences become fragments of a larger, shared field. The aim is not to produce a universal theory of the voice, but to make visible the different ways in which voices are formed, restricted, heard and reclaimed.
