☆．。．:*･° africa day 2026

Last Sunday, I had the honor of capturing LAAP Los Angeles African Professionals annual Africa Day, in collaboration with LA City Council District 9 and additional civic organizations. Guests celebrated culture, achievement, and enjoyed traditional song and dance. It was an incredible afternoon of global leadership.

Special guests and honorees included Toka Omishakin, California State Secretary of Transportation, and Dr. Elsie S. Kanza, Ambassador of Tanzania to the United States; Congressman Jonathan Jackson, U.S. Representative and Illinois ’ 1st Congressional District Member, Ambassador Lantosoa S.A. Rakotomalala, Ambassador of Madagascar to the United States; Mayor Craig Corman of Beverly Hills, Mayor Freddy Puza of Culver City, esteemed doctor Dr. Hisham M. Seify, and Paralympic Champion Swimmer Jamal Hill. The ceremony was presented by ABC7’s entertainment reporter George Pennacchio.

Thank you to the lovely Abiodun Koya for inviting me to capture and organizing such a wonderful event! Your energy and vibrancy is always appreciated.

❀˖°ʚïɞ Heliconius melpomene — the Postman Butterfly

Native to Mexico & South America, this butterfly specializes in Müllerian mimicry, a survival tactic that involves mimicking the appearance of other Heliconius butterflies to deter predators.

They’re classified by their dark brown and ivory + tangerine spots. The wingspan ranges from 2.5 to 3.3 inches, supporting a slow, yet erratic flight pattern that is characteristic of the species.

The Postman Butterfly loves fruit pollen from passionflowers. The toxins ingested from passionflower vines during the larval stage remain in the butterfly’s body into adulthood, serving as an effective defense mechanism against predators.

Clerodendrum Paniculatum — the pagoda flower.

This species is within the mint family, native to Southeast Asia and India, introduced to Europe in the 17th century. Its cultivation in Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia began centuries ago, easy to grow in humid climates to produce year-round blooms.

The pagoda is known to grow up to 6 ft tall. Their clusters of flowers make them a pollinator favorite — soft red petals that bloom simultaneously.

In Malaysia, the plant can be infused and drunk as a purgative and can be applied externally to the stomach. The roots have been used as a treatment for typhoid, an oral disease caused by Salmonella, where the leaves would treat external wounds and liver complaints. Several Ayurveda practices state that the plant pacifies inflammation and skin diseases, and there have been several antiviral effects discovered. by @__avvs__
