Special now has offices in AUCKLAND, SYDNEY, LA, MELBOURNE, WELLINGTON, NYC, LONDON, TOKYO We decided to move our business over to the Google platform in order to better integrate our global creative network. But we weren’t able to use our brand typeface on the platform. The easy solution was to choose a Google font for our documents and just live with the fact that they wouldn’t match our unique brand identity. But that’s not a solution. It just created another problem. We could collaborate on work together, but we’d look just like everyone else. So, we decided to do the right thing and, with the expertise of @monolith.nz and @googlefonts we designed our own custom typeface for use across our group. Which opened another can of worms: if we add it into Google fonts, now everyone else in the world can use our custom typeface. But we think that’s ok. Because that means everyone can look special. Make a presentation. Make a website. Make a business card. Make a t-shirt. Make a logo. MAKE IT SPECIAL. Special Gothic is now available on every computer in the world. Free. Not-so-exclusively from Google fonts. If you see Special Gothic in use out in the world DM us. And if you use Special Gothic be sure to share your work. We’re keen to see what you get up to. We’re proud to introduce the new brand identity for The New Zealand Society. Based in the United Kingdom, The New Zealand Society celebrates, supports and promotes New Zealand through trade, sport, arts and culture. At the heart of the identity is the idea of The Voyagers’ Embassy, a modern expression of connection between Aotearoa and the UK, inspired by New Zealand’s long tradition of exploration and global outlook. The new brand brings this idea to life through a system designed to connect a far-reaching community and represent New Zealand with clarity and pride abroad. At the centre of The New Zealand Society identity is the Kiwi Griffin. The symbol represents New Zealanders living in the United Kingdom and the close relationship between the two nations, reflecting The New Zealand Society’s role as an unofficial embassy for the Kiwi community abroad. The mark brings together a series of symbolic elements:
The Kiwi, New Zealand’s most iconic bird, representing the identity and uniqueness of New Zealanders.
The Lion and English Rose, enduring symbols of England, expressing heritage, unity and tradition. And the wings, representing the voyage Kiwis have made to the UK. Together these elements form a symbol of connection, heritage and the shared story between New Zealand and the United Kingdom. To celebrate the completion of the project, it made sense to produce a specimen that could match the scale and heft of the typeface. After a few ideas back and forth, we decided we should just let the typeface do the talking, so each spread represents one glyph from the overall Special Gothic character set. The final format is inspired by an original Linotype specimen that sits here on the shelf next to us — one that served as a guide throughout this design process. Congratulations to @special_group, and thank you for your trust and commitment to seeing this work happen. by @__specialdesign
Special Gothic is built around three core widths — Condensed, Standard & Extended. These widths along with weight parameters then blend into one another as a variable font capable of everything in between. The slides here are moving thanks to the wonderful @_homework_studio The full variable version of Special Gothic is now available on Google Fonts. A big thank you to @w__h____ and @emmarichal for their assistance in seeing this through. by @__specialdesign
We loved partnering with Turners & Growers to refresh their premier apple brand for sustained growth in global markets. ENVY™ has long been recognised for its exceptional quality, but the opportunity was far greater: to shift from a high-quality commodity to a globally distinctive premium brand.    In one of the world’s most commoditised categories, ENVY™ already stood apart with a name that suggests desire and indulgence. The brand evolution doubles down on these emotional signals, leaning into the universal cues of exceptional taste and lifting ENVY™ out of the apple category altogether.   When noticing something exceptional it’s worth looking again with a more discerning and appreciative eye. In the case of ENVY™ it’s about inviting people to see apples not as everyday fruit, but as objects of beauty, craft, and desire. This is the next chapter for ENVY™, reach for the exceptional. by @__specialdesign

The Inclusive Code grabs a gold pin @bestdesignawards! We’re incredibly proud that The Inclusive Code — a collaborative project with @allisforall , Fonoti Pati Umaga and a team of lived experience advocates — has taken home Gold. This achievement sends a powerful message to every agency and brand: disability inclusion is a core professional skill, not an optional “nice to have” or a charitable add-on. The Inclusive Code moves inclusive thinking firmly into the realm of creative and strategic best practice. You can read more about the project here: the-inclusive-code.co.nz A huge congratulations also goes out to our very own Holly Gascoigne, who received Gold for her outstanding graduate project. And finally, a big thank you and congratulations to all our amazing clients who took home awards on the night!
