In honor of Filipino Heritage Month, The Playgrounds’ 13th play will be…

DOGEATERS by JESSICA HAGEDORN

What is this play about?
ā€œJessica Hagedorn’s Dogeaters is a play in two acts that deals with the brutal suppression of political opposition to Ferdinand Marcos’s government in the Philippines, as framed against the first Manila International Film Festival. Hagedorn playfully rearranges historical events and presents the harrowing and tragic narrative as a radio soap opera.ā€ (BookRags.com) ā€œThe title is a common derogatory term referring to Filipino natives who supposedly eat dogs instead of pork or chicken. The term reflects attitudes within Filipino culture and attempts to become more westernized.ā€ (Wikipedia) Through a series of vignettes, Dogeaters explores Marcos Era Philippines in the year 1959 through a range of different perspectives, acknowledging the grief and despair that followed centuries of colonialism, the political unrest and chaos of the rising dictatorship, and the duality of the fear and hope for the future of the Philippines that existed in the hearts of many.
CW: Please consider that this play involves many graphic themes, such as gun violence, sexual violence and exploitation of minors, and drug abuse.

šŸ•°ļøFAILURE: A LOVE STORY by PHILLIP DAWKINSšŸ«€

What is this play about?
ā€œBy the end of 1928, all three Fail sisters will be dead — expiring in reverse order, youngest to oldest, from blunt object to the head, disappearance, and finally consumption. Tuneful songs, and a whimsical chorus follow the story of Nelly, Jenny June, and Gerty as they live out their lives above the family clock repair shop near the Chicago River, before their time unexpectedly runs out. A magical, musical fable where, in the end, the power of love is far greater than any individual’s successes or failures.ā€ (playscripts.com)

PERFECT ARRANGEMENT by TOPHER PAYNE

What is this play about?
ā€œIn Topher Payne’s biting comedy, Perfect Arrangement, it’s 1950 and new colors are being added to the Red Scare. Two U.S. State Department employees, Bob and Norma, have been tasked with identifying sexual deviants within their ranks. The twist: Both Bob and Norma are gay, and have married each other’s partners as a carefully constructed cover. Inspired by the true story of the earliest stirrings of the American gay rights movement, madcap ā€œI Love Lucyā€ sitcom-style laughs give way to provocative drama as two ā€œAll-Americanā€ couples are forced to stare down the closet door, confronting the very struggles facing society today.ā€ (broadwayworld.com)Ā

ā€œAt the Frasier household, preparations for Grandma’s birthday party are underway. Beverly is holding on to her sanity by a thread to make sure this party is perfect, but her sister can’t be bothered to help, her husband doesn’t seem to listen, her brother is MIA, her daughter is a teenager, and maybe nothing is what it seems in the first place…! FAIRVIEW is a searing examination of families, drama, family dramas, and the insidiousness of white supremacy.ā€ (dramatists.com)Ā

MAN OF GOD by ANNA OEYANG MOENCH

What is this play about?
ā€œDuring a mission trip to Bangkok, the four members of a Korean Christian girls’ youth group discover that their revered pastor has hidden a camera in their hotel bathroom. Samantha is personally wounded that Pastor would do this to her. Jen is worried about how this might affect her college applications. Mimi’s out for blood, as usual. And Kyung-Hwa thinks everyone needs to have lower expectations for men. Their communal rage and disillusionment fuel increasingly violent revenge fantasies amidst the no-holds-barred neon bubblegum sex-tourism mecca of Bangkok. MAN OF GOD is a funny feminist thriller about that moment when girls realize the male gaze has been watching all along—and decide they’re definitely gonna do something about it.ā€ (annaouyangmoench.com)

FEFU AND HER FRIENDS by MARÍA IRENE FORNÉS

What is this play about?
ā€œOn a spring day in 1935, eight women gather at Fefu’s New England home. A gracious host, Fefu organizes a weekend of camaraderie as well as work: The friends are rehearsing a charity presentation for a local school. But this gathering lays bare past heartaches and secrets among the women, from heartbreak, to emotional and physical exhaustion, to devastating illness. At the center of this group is Fefu, a woman who is both powerful yet broken, belittling women as she cares for and nurtures her friends… Fefu is desperate to let her mind rest, and… a revelation [comes] through a tragic final confrontation.
Fefu and Her Friends is a feminist exploration of women’s roles and relationships—how they support each other, how they injure each other, and how they can create a community together. Notable for its experimental staging in which the audience moves through the theatre building to view different scenes, Fefu and Her Friends is a dynamic story of women, friendship, and the secrets that bind them together.ā€ (stageagent.com)

Through over two decades of their parents’ tumultuous relationship of getting together, breaking up, getting married and then divorced, Max and Diana are perpetually forced together and become the most unlikely of friends.
