8/31 Aquarium Date. Highly recommend. There’s so much to learn from nature. This summer has reintroduced me to my love for the ocean and all of the creatures that exist within it. There was a incredible exhibit called “Hold Fast” where artists and marine biologists/kelp conservationists collaborated to communicate the importance and urgency of doing something about the climate crisis because of how it’s affecting the kelp forests. Did you know that 70% of our air comes from kelp and other aquatic plant life? I didn’t, until I went to this exhibit. I cried a lot at the aquarium. Not just at this exhibit, but all around the aquarium, experiencing awe for all the beautiful creatures, and also observing others in their awestruck state. It’s incredible to see how people in the fields of art and science are working together to create meaningful change. Then, we proceeded to eat seafood for linner (lunch/dinner) and I had very mixed feelings… but it was delicious. Life has been beautiful, and I have been very lucky to share it with those who have been apart of it these past few months. this may have just been the summer of my life. I love my new family.

I’m sort of at a loss for words to describe what I’ve been experiencing the past several weeks.
I’ve been incredibly blessed to have the space to make strides towards my dreams that I would have never been able to make back at home:
I’ve co-written a play, I’ve written my own play which I’ve already submitted to a new works festival. I’ve written a song. I’ve written two poems after being dormant in my poetry writing these past few years. I’ve been in five different productions (4 staged, 1 filmed). For the first time, I assistant directed, directed photography for, and edited, and starred in my first short film. I’ve connected with people I never thought I’d meet at this stage of my career. Working with my cohort this summer has been an honor and a blessing. I haven’t felt this inspired in a long time. I can feel my dreams being set in motion.
And with all of this, I’ve also been grieving the state of the world. I’m in a mystical place where so much art and magic is happening, and yet, every so often I take a peak back into what’s happening outside of this place and I can’t help but feel a great sense of despair.
My roommate is from Kyiv. Last week, a missile hit a children’s hospital in her hometown.
The debate between Joe Biden and Trump happened and as much as I’d like to continue treating it like a joke, it really struck me with a sense of doom.
I haven’t been as present on social media since I’ve been here, so I haven’t been keeping up-to-date about Palestine. I read and watched some things yesterday and I wept to my friend about the shame and guilt I carry for not being able to do more.
I felt helpless and irresponsible for being here, doing what I love while so many people are suffering.
I wrote this poem for our “Social Justice for the Performing Artist” class last week. I did it in about 10 minutes, and I edited it a little today. It’s not perfect, but it’s a glimpse into where my head is at right now. I used to create just because I loved the arts. Now, my creative life’s mission is to make art that truly makes a difference.
