Maryland. Chasing fish in our local rivers and ponds

With fall fishing fully upon us, I thought I'd look back at some of my favorite catches from this summer. Sometimes for the quality of fish, sometimes for how hard they fought, or sometimes for the story surrounding the catch. Oftentimes it's all three. I've been trying hard to increase my skill as an angler and keep getting out there, even if only for an hour at a time. I only started fishing with lures in July of last year. I had also never done any freshwater fishing before then. I'm north of 200 landed fish so far this year. I feel like a lot of the voices online for freshwater fishing are from the south or midwest and sometimes the stuff they say just doesn't translate super well to Maryland fishing. It makes me happy to see the cadre of talented Maryland anglers posting content online. I'm trying to be one of them.

Fallfish really love the Karashi. This time of year is going to mean a lot of fallfish content. I rarely target them, but I catch a lot of them while I'm chasing smallies. They hold a special place in my heart because they taught me a lot about how to fish. If you've never went after them before I'd highly recommend it. They're not picky and you catch them all winter long with ease. This is the one fish I could probably take someone on a guided trip for 🤣

This time of year, I'd recommend the Karashi, as well as small craws like the NedWacky mini battle bug. When it gets colder, throw small jerkbaits like the Rapala Husky Jerk, and the Megabass X-80 junior. When it gets even COLDER, dead stick craws and small hellgrammites for 1-3 minutes and then drag them painfully slowly along the bottom. Some of my best fallfish have been caught in the middle of winter.

Cheers

This chain pickerel missed the Karashi 80 on my previous cast. Not this time

8 in 75 minutes. This is what fall fishing is SUPPOSED to be. Not whatever nonsense the last 3 weeks has been. Karashi was spankin em.

This fallfish went for the micro chattawacka three times.

Throwback July largemouth. These river largies are strong. Nothing like the ones you catch in a pond. I believe this one was on the NedWacky bot worm, rigged up on a shakey head.

Cannibalistic lil largemouth hits the Karashi 80. Where have the smallies gone?

Big ol fallfish on the NedWacky micro chattawacka, successfully landed via the Kinney's 6'10 ML fast.

Catching smallmouth of any size sparks joy. They really love the mini battle bug.
