Controstorie. Nidhal Chamekh, Christian Jankowski.
A cura di Marco Scotini.
4 luglio - 7 novembre

🇬🇧 The exhibition Controstorie (Counter-Histories), at the Galleria Enrico Astuni in Bologna, brings together Nidhal Chamekh and Christian Jankowski, two very different artists united by a shared interest in memory, the monument, and the ways in which history is constructed and represented.

The starting point is the idea that history is not a single, definitive narrative, but something that can be continually rewritten starting from different memories, archives, and perspectives.

Nos Visages – Nidhal Chamekh

In this series, images taken from the French colonial magazine Le Miroir are reworked, overlapping fragmented faces of African soldiers who have been erased from the official historical narrative.

Francis Offman — Più bianco del bianco
P420, Bologna | 18 settembre – 14 novembre 2026

🇬🇧 "I subtracted the works from the first glance. Not because they don't exist, not because I've stopped working — but because I didn't want to add another ready-made answer to a world already full of answers."

For his second solo show at P420, Francis Offman (Butare, Rwanda, 1987 — lives and works in Bologna) chooses subtraction. The space is divided into three rooms: the first two, enormous and white, are almost empty. Almost, because emptiness is never empty: there is air, there is anticipation, there is the intense aroma of coffee spreading through the rooms without letting itself be seen — present but never an object.

A white sheet, made by Offman himself, closes off the third room. Pulling it aside leads into his studio, left intact just as it is used every day: no longer white, but full of traces, matter, and a few of his own works hanging on the wall. The gesture of raising a hand to move the sheet aside becomes an act of responsibility, a step beyond the first impression.

The exhibition's title takes up and reverses the famous line from Blade Runner, "More human than human": if there, someone claims to measure what is human, here Offman asks what happens when we accept that someone else measures whiteness, humanity, the boundary, the truth for us.

I temi della famiglia (Family portrait, but I wasn't there), dello sguardo altrui (If I can't take the sky, I'll get a little), dell'immaginazione (Il cielo, se fossi stato io Dio) e della perdita (When we die, will it matters?) tornano con la stessa ingenuità felice che l'adulto sogna la notte, o spera di ritrovare dopo la pensione.

🇬🇧 After satanicpizzaiolo's residency at SpazioTorso by Michele Cotelli, "Mamma, guarda!" opens, curated by Federica Porro. At the entrance, a hopscotch game drawn on the floor introduces the exhibition's theme: recovering childhood through play, able to distance us from the most extreme moment of life — that of death.

The canvases, mounted on metal structures by Michele Cotelli, move in the wind like hanging laundry. With simple shapes and vivid colors, they awaken the "little child" that everyone abandoned while growing up. The themes of family (Family portrait, but I wasn't there), of others' gaze (If I can't take the sky, I'll get a little), of imagination (Il cielo, se fossi stato io Dio), and of loss (When we die, will it matters?) return with the same happy naivety that adults dream of at night, or hope to find again after retirement.

Visiting this exhibition reminds us that we don't always need to act with a purpose: sometimes losing ourselves in play helps us find answers to deeper questions.

🇬🇧 @thekaderattia once asked a shaman a question: do computer viruses have spirits?

That story is at the heart of Whisper of Traces, his installation at this year's Venice Biennale. The shaman believes invisible spirits are quietly resisting human civilization through technology — that the digital world isn't as separate from the spiritual one as we assume. The video shows something related: how different cultures protect their ancient rituals.

Attia takes this seriously. His real concern is what he calls the "colonization of the mind" — the idea that smartphones and screens are replacing something essential: the way we've always shaped who we are through physical contact with others. Meeting someone's eyes. Moving through a space. Leaving traces of ourselves behind, like ants or bees passing pheromones.

Walking through the installation itself becomes a small act of resistance — doing, physically, the very thing he thinks we're at risk of losing.

Guardarsi negli occhi. Muoversi in uno spazio.

🇬🇧 Somalia is the Nation of Poets, where word, song, and poetry are one living tradition, carrying memory across generations.

The Pavilion turns that structure into space: three floors, one triadic rhythm, told through colors, sounds, and images.

The journey opens with Warsan Shire, moves through Asmaa Jama's film and installation, and closes with Ayan Farah's soil-dyed textiles.

Two days at the Venice Biennale, and it still wasn’t enough. There is simply too much to see, so I had to make a difficult choice and select only a few of the many pavilions open to visitors.

Some surprised me, some left me with more questions than answers, and others simply stayed in my mind long after I left.

Here are the ones I found most interesting.

🇬🇧 @bottegazanchi welcomed me into his studio to show me some of his latest works, born from a new artistic direction inspired by his Spoleto exhibition "Cose piccole" (an 18th-century expression used to describe still lifes).

On the canvases, abstract forms come to life through a blend of conscious and subconscious drawing. Vibrant landscapes that, I have to admit, really got my day off to a great start! 🎨

🇬🇧 At Spazio Torrso by Michele Cotelli, the exhibition "Prima di Perdersi (“Before Getting Lost”) featuring the works of Giuseppe Urciolo and Enrico Pierotti is currently on view.

Giuseppe Urciolo's paintings are fragments of everyday life, where curious figures inhabit intimate spaces shaped by an essential colour palette. Enrico Pierotti, on the other hand, uses light-filled landscapes to explore what cannot be seen: what is absent or what has yet to happen.

🇬🇧 In the exhibition "Con i se e con i ma," curated by Giulia Pontoriero, artists @ricardo_aleodor_venturi and @gianna_t__ wear papier-mâché masks depicting their grandmother's face.

🇬🇧 This gesture reminded me of an ancient Roman ritual practiced by patrician families, known as "imagines maiorum". Upon the death of a family member, a procession of relatives would wear wax masks representing their ancestors, symbolically accompanying the deceased on their final journey.

🇬🇧 While, in Gianna T.'s case, the mask becomes a way of bringing back someone who is no longer with us,

🇬🇧 for Riccardo it becomes an alter ego of the original.

🇬🇧 The remaining rooms are filled with photographic portraits and drawings of the two women.

🇬🇧 Found in almost every culture, the mask is an attempt to step into someone else's identity.

And if that someone is a person to whom we are emotionally connected, then art becomes one of the many forms of love.

Naples never stops reinventing itself. Amid its millennia-old history, I discovered the world's tallest mural, created by @jorit , and the stunning Chiaia–Monte di Dio station.

Beyond the stereotypes that often surround this city, Naples continues to surprise those who are curious enough to truly look at it.

Some of its most fascinating treasures are not the ones everyone knows, but the ones still waiting to be discovered.

Finally, Palazzo Ducale is starting to feel more and more like a great gallery rather than just a majestic residence.

Recently, major restoration works have reopened several spaces that had been closed for years. Many artworks have been taken out of storage and displayed in completely redesigned exhibitions.

And thankfully, the Renaissance is slowly becoming just one — and not the only — historical and artistic period that visitors can discover here.

I really appreciated the new virtual reality panels installed in the library, which help visitors understand what the underground spaces — such as the kitchens, stables, and icehouses — originally looked like.

Restoration work is currently underway in the Throne Room and the Melaranci Apartments.

I’m optimistic about the people currently managing the #gndm , because these changes show that the institution is moving in the right direction.
