Join us at @bronxmuseum this Friday, October 9 from 6-8 PM to celebrate our fall 2026 exhibitions, including artist @_alex_strada’s project ‘Public Address’ - which you may have heard about in a recent report from @allofitwnyc with @iamalisonstewart!

A citywide project that platforms the log writings of people living in and working in NYC shelters on official signage produced by @nyc_dot, ‘Public Address’ debuted in Manhattan in 2024 before traveling to Brooklyn. Following its presentation in The Bronx this fall, ‘Public Address’ will appear on Staten Island then make a final stop in Flushing Meadows in partnership with @queensmuseum.

@bronxmuseum partnered with @_alex_strada, @storefrontnyc, @nyculture, and @nycdhs to bring ‘Public Address’ to The Bronx - the borough with the highest number of shelters in NYC.

Since mid-September, a central installation of signs has been on view at Joyce Kilmer Park, one block south of @bronxmuseum on Grand Concourse. Additional signs can be found in public spaces of every community board district in The Bronx.

An additional component of ‘Public Address, goes on view at @bronxmuseum this Friday alongside three other exhibitions: ‘Saya Woolfalk: The WoodsWoman Method’, ‘Beyond the Margins: Bronx Museum Teens Activate the Permanent Collection’, and ‘Lifelong Studio: Transcending the Form - Abstract Figurative Painting’. Learn more about the exhibitions and RSVP to the opening celebration this Friday via the link in @bronxmuseum’s bio 🔗 🥳

Honored to talk with Alison Stewart as a longtime listener of @allofitwnyc . Thank you to Alison and her team for giving time and space to discuss Public Address and the profound housing inequities in our city, and to highlight the many, many people who have shaped the project—above all, the residents and frontline staff in @nycdhs shelters who wrote log entries directed to the greater NYC public, and the collaborative infrastructure across @storefrontnyc @nyculture @nyc_dot @nyc_dotart @nycparks and now the @bronxmuseum that enables the work to keep iterating in public space across the boroughs.

Join us at the Bronx Museum on October 9 for the opening of all fall exhibitions, including Public Address in Joyce Kilmer Park, and on October 24 for Community Joy and Justice Day with @legalaidnyc taken in WNYC by @_alex_strada

@jwaynberg and @mollygarf have dedicated years to researching CETA and learning from the artists and spaces across the U.S. that shaped it. That work comes together beautifully in “ART/WORK: The Practice and Politics of CETA and the Arts” a show that opened last night at the CUNY @jamesgallerygc , mining this history to explore the artist as worker, governmental loopholes, and collective power.

@theyxtabunny and I contributed a new two-channel video that tracks minimum wage alongside federal spending on the arts, war, and austerity measures, as well as the movements and structures artists and cultural workers built in response.

Congratulations to all involved—including @darling_green_studio on the stellar exhibition design! Up through Dec 12 taken in The James Gallery by @_alex_strada

Thank you to all who joined at @storefrontnyc to learn from the brilliant Martha Rosler and revisit “If You Lived Here…” (1989) and its reverberations into the present. Deeply grateful to Martha for her decades of commitment to housing advocacy and art practice, and to everyone doing the work. taken in Storefront for Art and Architecture by @_alex_strada

Join us Tuesday, August 18, for a lecture by artist Martha Rosler on her landmark project "If You Lived Here" (1989). Artist Alex Strada will be in conversation with Rosler exploring some of the lessons carried forward into Strada’s current project, "Public Address," currently on view across the city. Together, they will reflect on Rosler’s decades-long engagement with housing, public space, and community—inviting reflection on how questions raised over thirty years ago continue to shape socially engaged artistic practice, and the way we think about housing insecurity, home and belonging today. Join us in Brooklyn for a public reading on the occasion of Alex Strada’s “Public Address” on Monday, June 8, from 6–7:30 pm. This program takes place inside the project’s main installation at Columbus Park, and is in partnership with the Brooklyn Public Library.

Guest readers are artist Pablo Helguera, community organizer and educator Rob Robinson, Arash Diba of @vocalnewyork, advocate Maria Ponce Sevilla, author Samuel Stein, scholar Alexandra Délano Alonso, Eva Raison, Director of Brooklyn Public Library's Outreach Services, and architect Nandini Bagchee. The readings will be accompanied by an artist-led walkthrough of the installation.

The artworks in Public Address—handwritten and drawn accounts printed as aluminum city street signs—were created by people living and working within New York City's shelter system through log writing workshops. Written to be encountered and responded to, these anonymous entries are addressed to the NYC public, inviting reflection and collective attention.

“I make art to transform systems of power. ‘Public Address’ emerges from years of sustained listening, working closely with people experiencing homelessness and frontline shelter staff across the boroughs. ... Record-level homelessness demands new tools and calls on every New Yorker to engage.” — @_Alex_Strada

Artist Alex Strada’s “Public Address” - now on view in Brooklyn - is a long-term, multiborough, and socially engaged installation that centers the lived experiences of housing insecurity. Created through Strada’s work with the NYC Department of Homeless Services through @NYCulture’s the Public Artists in Residence (#PAIRnyc) program, the project seeks to destigmatize homelessness by amplifying the voices of people living in city shelters and frontline shelter staff through platforming their handwritten and drawn reflections onto official city signage, fabricated by the Department of Transportation.

In addition to the main installation, individual signs have been installed throughout every community district in Brooklyn—extending the project’s reach across the borough. After debuting last October in Manhattan’s Lt. Petrosino Square, “Public Address” moved to Downtown Brooklyn’s Columbus Park last month. The individual signs posted in communities across Manhattan will remain in place, so that the project leaves a lasting imprint on each borough as it moves across the city.

Bringing together several City agencies—Department of Parks and Recreation (@NYCParks), Department of Cultural Affairs (@NYCulture), Department of Homeless Services (@NYCDHS), and Department of Transportation (@NYC_DOT and @NYC_DOTArt)—with Storefront for Art and Architecture (@StorefrontNYC), “Public Address” exemplifies how artistic practice can tangibly respond to complex issues like homelessness and confront the shifting terrain of civic life.

“Public Address” is on view in Columbus Park through summer 2026.

A logbook is a record-keeping device typically used in NYC’s homeless shelters as a way for shelter staff to relay key information at the end of their shifts. It is also a key part of Alex Strada’s installation “Public Address.” The exhibition’s main installation will move from Manhattan’s Petrosino Square to Brooklyn’s Columbus Park in the coming days.

Since 2022, Strada has been the Public Artist in Residence with the NYC Department of Homeless Services and Cultural Affairs. During this time, she has led countless log-writing workshops in shelters, with both staff and those living in shelter. These workshops invite participants to record—in any language or medium—what they feel is most important for the city’s general public to know about the homelessness crisis.

By bringing these testimonies to the street and public parks across the city, Strada subverts the authority of city signage. She urges us to stop and pay attention to this pressing issue as told by those most deeply affected.

The project’s network of smaller signs—beginning with 12 in Manhattan—will remain on view as the project grows in Brooklyn, then iterating across the city with each move through the boroughs.

This project is co-commissioned with the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (@nyculture), and is in collaboration with the Department of Homeless Services (@nycdhs), Department of Transportation (@nyc_dot), and NYC Parks (@nycparks). by @_alex_strada
