learning how to manage a disability so invisible even doctors can’t find it

“Disabled” can look like so many different things!

text on video: “invisibly disabled” unless you know where to look

alt text: white woman with mid-length wavy brown hair sits in a booth at a restaurant. she wears a blue wrap halter top with the Knicks logo on it. then, videos flash through in the following order: close up of a black arm band, close up of a metal straw in a glass cup, close up of black ear plugs, close up of heart rate on watch, five clips of the woman putting her hair up into a black claw clip and off of her neck, three clips of the woman using a black fan to cool her face and neck, three videos of the woman walking through two sets of doors with beige patches on her back.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to make my content more accessible for your viewing pleasure!

well @cityofphiladelphia mayor consider this my formal complaint ☺️

maybe let’s normalize not putting the labor on disabled people to fix inaccessible situations 🤷‍♀️

I am TIRED of showing up again again to events that claim they are “wheelchair accessible,” and instead are downright unsafe for me to be at.

it took me forever to edit this video for multiple reasons:
1. i'm disabled and chronically ill so i don't have a lot of energy to spare.
2. every time i tried to edit this video, i got pissed off again and had to stop 😂
3. the conversation in this video was originally much longer and i had to cut it down for the algorithm...

Able bodied folks need to DO BETTER !!!! Why wasn’t the barricade adjusted in the first place? How can you call your event wheelchair accessible when I could not enter or exit in my wheelchair? Gah I’m so mad.

#Wheelchair #WheelchairUser #Accessibility #ChronicIllness #Disabled

alt text: White woman with her brown hair pulled pack in a low bun (Alex) tries to exit a July 4th fireworks event in Philadelphia, but her red and black wheelchair can’t fit through the barricade. She wears a blue and orange color block tube top.

Her wheelchair gets stuck in the grass trying to go around the exit, and she has to double back through the dirt and grass before riding back on the gray sidewalk.

For the final potion of the video, when she speaks to the officers, the camera is pointed at the ground and only Alex’s legs are visible. by @_alexandra_george_

After I contacted the city, I had an emotionally intense conversation with the salon owner. I heard every excuse in the book from the owner, and at no point did the owner apologize or take accountability for the fact that their business was inaccessible to me as a wheelchair user. They said that they’ve had wheelchair users in their Salon before who were able to pop their wheels up over the step. They said that they tried to make their Salon accessible, but contractor said that it wasn’t allowed. They said their best friend is a quadriplegic. They said that they would’ve ordered a portable ramp, but portable ramps are dangerous. They said they have a had blind people come to their salon before. They had every excuse and explanation in the book, and refused to accept the responsibility of having a Salon that was inaccessible to me.

I explained that there are other businesses in the area that have portable ramps that work great for me and my wheelchair. I advised them to contact other businesses to see if they could borrow their portable ramp. Turns out, after I got off the phone with the owner that they learned that their landlord *magically* had a portable ramp to enter the building that the salon was in the whole time!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was dismissed by the staff at the Salon multiple times before getting through to the owner. I had to speak very sternly to get anyone to listen to me. It’s ridiculous looking back at it now knowing that they had access to a portable ramp the whole time.

NOT TO MENTION, the repeated phone calls with the Salon throughout the day were extremely stressful and draining. Stress is one of the primary triggers for my symptoms, and I try to avoid it as much as I can.

Being disabled is exhausting. I need non-disabled people to start caring more. People need to learn to be nicer to disabled people. We already have it hard enough.

This is your reminder that just because a space is accessible for one disabled person doesn’t mean that it’s accessible to all disabled people. AND if your business is not accessible to a disabled person, that’s textbook discrimination.

disclaimer: none of my medications actually keep me from death… they just help me manage my very uncomfortable and very painful symptoms.

image description: a carousel of selfies of Alex (a white woman with her brown hair pulled in a low bun) laying in bed. her bed has a dark green headboard and white sheets. she wears a pink tank top. she looks continually displeased with her own behavior.

text on screen: have you ever… [the text in the following captions will be the text on the corresponding image]

accidentally not taken one of your pills

that you need to survive,

but you have to take more than a dozen pills a day,

so you genuinely missed one of them?

not to mention,

you didn’t even realize

that you missed a dose of an important medication

until you started feeling symptoms of what the medication is supposed to help with?

no, just me?

I wish I could say this is the first time this has happened.

it’s all right you can shame me in the comments by @_alexandra_george_

yet another horrifying reality of being a wheelchair user in @hobokennj

this isn’t the first time I’ve had trouble getting into my building, and it won’t be the last. I’m very lucky that I just so happened to move out of my fourth-floor walk-up apartment before I became a wheelchair user, but the building I live in now is not wheelchair accessible either. it would take me more characters than Instagram captions allow to explain all of the reasons why my building is not wheelchair accessible.

we've already had to have multiple conversations with building management to try and get other accommodations for example, there were several weeks where there was trash piled up in front of the ramp, so I could access it at all. plus, I had to fight them for a garage clicker so I could enter the building in the first place.

I am absolutely desperate to move out of the apartment I live in now to move to a more wheelchair accessible one that I can exit and enter INDEPENDENTLY.

however, the only wheelchair accessible buildings in my city are the recently-build luxury high-rises... which are way out of my budget. as far as I know, Hoboken does not offer any support when it comes to housing for wheelchair users like me. I'm terrified that I'm going to have to leave the city that I love so much to be able to have autonomy.

and this is just ONE example of the challenges I face being a wheelchair user in Hoboken. it just sucks. it just SUCKS. I should be able to enter and exit my own home just like anybody else... but apparently that's too much to ask.

video description: Alexandra, a white woman with shoulder-length wavy brown hair begins the video facing backwards on a non-wheelchair accessible ramp in a parking garage. she wears a black square-neck tank top and a burnt orange midi skirt. she gestures wildly with her hands as she talks, and she is eventually able to make it up the ramp safely.

99.99% of the time you can catch me with @apotatoandaweenie

Video description: Alex, a white woman with shoulder-length wavy brown hair, rides her red power chair around the cement dog park. She wears an oversized yellow top and black leggings. Her dogs, a cream French bulldog (Chowder) and a black and tan Dachshund (Mambo) chase her around the park. At the beginning of the video, Alex holds chowder up like she is Rafiki and The Lion King during the opening scene. At the end of the video, Alex picks the dogs up to give them pets in her chair.

Text on screen: Chowder and Mambo used to always be static in the dog park, laying under our feet. Now they love to chase me in my chair 😭

hot take alert

Text on screen: When the *pop* sound effect plays, a thought bubble appears over Alex's head and it reads, "No, all spaces should be accessible. Non-disabled people shouldn't support inaccessible businesses."

Video Description: Alex, a white woman with shoulder-length wavy brown hair, sits in bed and talks to the camera in selfie mode. She wears a magenta t-shirt. The bed sheets are white and the headboard is dark green.

Edit: Sorry there there were so many typos in this caption originally. I need to get better at using my dictation app. My fingers are not built for typing anymore 😂

I rant a lot these days. Owen happened to capture this one in camera.

text on screen: The other night, Owen was recording me going over sidewalk bumps. After a few consecutive rough patches of sidewalk, I launched into a monologue. Don’t worry, the lighting will get better in a bit.

video description: It’s nighttime outdoors on a city street. At the start of the video, Alex, a wheelchair user, navigates bumps on the sidewalk with a moderate level of difficulty. Then, she stops and talks to the camera, but it’s very difficult to see her face. During the tone, color bars appear. Then, Alex is in a new location that is better lit. She wears a brown and pink butterfly pattern tube top and wears he mid-length brown hair down and wavy.

I had genuinely the best time outside of my apartment that I have had in a VERY long time at @thesqkywheel’s Squeaky Fest this week !! (it’s amazing how much more comfortable I am when the event is fully accessible 😭)

shoutout to @sillyverdile for putting the PHENOMENAL event together!

being in a room with dozens of other disabled people healed me in ways I didn’t know I needed. I can’t wait to go back for the final show of Squeaky Fest ‘26 next week 💙

if NYC is accessible to you, I highly recommend you come out to Lincoln Center on Wednesday, July 29, 2026 at 7:30 pm for the FREE comedy show!

all of the Squeaky Fest events are live streamed and posted to YouTube. head over to @thesqkywheel for more info.

I just feel like this is worth mentioning, but you can and SHOULD support disabled artists regardless of whether you are non-disabled or disabled. if you’ve never supported a disabled artist before, Disability Pride Month is a great time to start!

the phenomenal performers/artists in this video, listed in order of appearance:
@joelchapmanmusic
@itsashleywool
@iangoldsteinyes
@lachimusic
@triplehhh408
@bainbridgejenna

Video Description: A group of performers and artists with a wide variety of disabilities, some visual, some not, perform on a cabaret stage with a black piano in the background.

Text on Screen: BREAKING NEWS (in red) with the words “disabled people can be talented” underneath in white. The text is present at the start of the video and lasts on screen for approximately 5 seconds.
