Ahhh that moment when you drop your camera off the side of the boat…

There’s something magical about the ocean—the mystery beneath the surface, holding entire worlds we rarely get to see. But nothing compares to the wonder of seeing whales underwater. Even more special is witnessing these sweet moments with a mother and a calf. On a once in a lifetime trip, as you dip below the surface, the world above fades away. It’s such an unforgettable moment, it’s as if time seems to stop—and you’re left in awe of a connection few ever get to experience.

What do you do when a humpback whale calf approaches you? Even as a calf, calves can range between 13 to 16 feet around this time and way 2000 to 3000 pounds at birth. The best thing to do is continue passive in water encounters, staying calm, and sharing in the same curiosity and interest as this calf has with you! taken in Silver Bank by @_aquaticadventures

Every year, humpback whales gather 90 miles off of the Dominican Republic at the Silverbank. The shallow warm waters are the perfect place for breeding and caving. Between 5000-7000 whales, from new mothers, estrous females seeking a mate, and eagerly competitive males, share this 650 sq. mile reef. It provides incredibly unique opportunities to see mothers rearing their calves as they learn about the world around them and rowdy behaviors from prospective male and female mating whales.
I continue to return to this place and each time am surprised by the incredible behaviors and encounters we share with these amazing animals taken in Dominican Republic by @_aquaticadventures
