We need to protect our wildlife. 💙

Just look at this. How could any amount of money be worth destroying the place these animals call home?

I want my kids and their kids to grow up with oceans full of life. To witness something like this and feel that same sense of wonder.

What we buy, who we support, and what we speak up about matter. These animals deserve a future here, too. And we have a responsibility to help protect it.

I have just returned from a once-in-a-lifetime experience of being underwater with humpback whales. Truly mesmerizing being so close to these gentle, giant creatures. Wildlife interactions are always life changing for me and this may be the apex of those encounters. #humpback #mscpix #iphone17

Every winter, North Atlantic humpback whales migrate to the Silver Bank, in the Dominican Republic — one of their most critical breeding grounds — to mate, give birth, and nurse their calves. 🐋

This year, as part of the Caribbean Cetacean Society's ongoing research, Gwen had the opportunity to integrate a standardized scientific monitoring protocol directly within a professional whale-watching operation, working alongside the experienced team at Aquatic Adventures aboard the Turks & Caicos Explorer II.

Over one week, we conducted 32 fixed-point monitoring sessions and collected 10 humpback fluke identifications — each one as unique as a fingerprint — across 134 recorded sightings. Data that will help us better understand how individuals use the Silver Bank, how group dynamics shift throughout the season, and how these whales connect different regions of the Caribbean.

What made this mission truly special was the framework itself: proof that rigorous science and responsible ecotourism are not in conflict — they are stronger together. 🌊

Grateful to Aquatic Adventures and the crew of the Turks & Caicos Explorer II, to every participant who contributed a photograph or a moment of stillness in the water, and to all the partners and funders making this work possible.

The ocean needs all of us 💙

Each January, the whales cross entire oceans to reach warm, protected waters and birth their calves.
Last month, Adrian and I slipped into that water with them.
In a season defined by outrage and reckoning, I keep thinking about maternal love — the ancient work of sheltering what cannot yet defend itself.
I wrote about that week, and what it revealed, on Substack.

An incredible week on Silver Bank 100 miles off the Dominican Republic to photograph the Atlantic humpbacks in their coral haven. It was fascinating learning the differences between the Atlantic and Pacific populations, physically and behaviorally. A contrast with these whales is their fully white pectoral fins and little to no white on their undersides. Big scenery change with shallower waters, coral heads and sand mixed in with visibility, but this one shot is my favorite of all this trip! Slowly getting the hang of things underwater🤗

Thank you @_aquaticadventures for an educational and fun-filled week with great people, beautiful weather and some unforgettable experiences. 😇💙🙏🏼

Silver Bank has been beautiful and so educational on whale behavior and migratory patterns. Couple more days out at sea before returning to port :)
