Can yall believe it’s already been a YEAR since the passing of the GREAT D’Angelo?!? Whew I can’t believe it!!!

Today’s prompt on my journal asked me to describe a song or an artist that makes me feel like myself, D’Angelo absolutely came to mind.. for as long as I could remember, I’ve been enamored by D’Angelo’s artistry..the lyrics, the instrumentation..the vocals in how they’re arranged..it’s blues, it’s soul, it’s rhythm, it’s gospel, it’s rock, it’s jazz, it’s heavy, it’s light, it’s high, it’s low, it’s everything!! I embraced and resonated with the many layers and dualities D’Angelo displayed and I can only imagine the depth he truly had to those who knew him in person… I’m glad that we have the legacy of his music to remember & be inspired from him!

Happy #BlackMusicMonth friends! Comin back to share and yap about physical what items you collect- do you collect CDs? Vinyl records ? Cassette tapes? Do you have a new age sound system or one of those old school systems your parents/grandparents or your cool aunt/uncle passed down to you?

Day 2 of #BlackMusicMonth has me wondering, “What Black artist taught you most about yourself?”

For as long as I can remember @missjillscott has been that artist for me. Her approach to writing encouraged me to be empowered to be a deep feeler and thinker..to see life and illustration in words ..to experience the richness of life and document it to tell a story..to learn the stories of others .. to step aside and live life in order to tell my owns I learned from here when I picked up Who is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol 1 when I was just 8 years old.. and I’m learning from her even now at 34 🥹

#flashbackfriday to preparation for installing the pieces in the space- me @ @goodyeararts trying to figure out how the space was going to be converted! This entire experience was so new to me and every part of this project required a helping hand - I’m SO GRATEFUL to my friends near and far who helped bring this vision to life! Thank you @myfrontrowfocus @bryanwilsonmfa @rajumabey @sancho.smalls @jameanajeart & @mrlo__ for your insight and assistance w/ creating the space into what it is now- i literally could t have done it without you all! I’m so grateful and such a big admirer of you all and I’m honored that yall are a part of this with me! I can’t wait for everyone to hear from you directly about the pieces you’ve made!

I LEARNED SO MUCH FROM THIS PROCESS!!! The main thing is you can delegate and meet your goals if you break them up into steps.. this process showed me how planning ahead and having a team is so so so important. This has changed how I will approach my creative and the logistics behind it for the better… I hope y’all ready, bc I’m/were just getting started!

I just learned that there’s a peach tree in my backyard

The timing in which this discovery was made Is as significant as the peach tree itself; y’all KNOW I got all hippity dippity and did some research…

Peach trees are among the first to bloom in spring.
Peaches carry various cultural and spiritual meanings such as: rebirth after hardship, trusting growth even when things aren’t fully in place, opening your heart, emotional warmth, deepening relationships around you, spiritual protection against negative energy, sustained growth & endurance. Accepting and enjoying beauty in the present, and so much more…

I don’t count it as coincidence to have come across this tree at this time..I, too am experiencing a rebirth and am transitioning into a very sweet season..one I wasn’t sure I was ready for..the pivot I’m navigating goes so much deeper than creative pursuits.. this phase I’m easing in feels soft and protected ..I’m being nudged towards growth and I’m getting blessed with opportunities to see what I’m made of! Everything is ripening around me..everything is blooming around me…and it’s from the work being done from the inside out. Im so happy and proud to have pushed through some of the roughest toughest seasons! I’m so happy to be laughing and exploring and learning and creating and implementing ..

I’m so happy that a discovery as simple and sweet as this is in the backyard..it’s my daily glimmer and reminder that I can trust goodness is blooming, that I can stay open, and that something good is forming!
