Birth of Dusk, 2026, is a black stoneware portrait bust made from a mold of a 3-D scan of the ancient Egyptian seated statue of Lady Sennuwy, a Middle Kingdom noblewoman. Over four thousand years old, the granodiorite statue was moved from Egypt to present-day Sudan three thousand years ago. Excavated from the tomb of a Nubian king in 1913, the statue is now located at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. A recurring character in El Siddique’s work, the statue has gone on journeys that mirror the artist’s own migration experience.

Azza El Siddique’s Begin in smoke, End in ashes Pt. II (2019–25), featured in The Aldrich Decennial: I am what is around me, explores ritual, memory, and transformation through a material-driven practice. Working across sculpture and installation, El Siddique draws from Sudanese perfumery, Nubian and Egyptian histories, and Islamic mortuary rituals to investigate themes of mortality and memorialization. Through materials such as bisque-fired clay and iron oxide, the work embraces processes of change and decay, revealing the passage of time as both a physical and emotional force. Her work contributes to the diverse artistic voices shaping Connecticut’s contemporary art landscape, bringing histories, materials, and cultural traditions into conversation within the state’s vibrant creative community.

Last week I was in the studio extracting DNA from Teto’s 1993 Nissan D21 Hardbody pickup truck, searching for traces of him in the places he once touched. 🧬🚙

It felt overwhelming to be doing this work while the world seems to keep spiraling into chaos. I find myself wondering if Teto exited at the right time. He had such a tough exterior, but his soul was incredibly sensitive. Sometimes I also wonder if the world was always like this—and our parents were just really good at shielding us from the hurt, pain, and destruction.

This week I’m in Buffalo processing the samples and seeing what stories they might hold. 🔬

On another note, I also swabbed Sunny’s mouth to collect her DNA—mainly so I can prove to her that I am, in fact, 99.9% her mother. 🐶💖 The last slide is Sunny recently celebrating her 11th birthday with a sushi cake. by @_az__za_

Over the last few weeks Azza has been amplifying targeted regions of her DNA at the Coalesce BioArt Lab! This is a crucial step within the process of creating “The Edifice of Tirhaga,” as she must identify and separate her own DNA from that of her late brother Teto. This week, Azza is starting the process of collecting DNA from Teto’s 1993 Nissan pickup truck.

Within these images, you can see Azza and our Coalesce Lab Manager, Solon, preparing Azza’s cheek epithelial DNA from a saliva sample. The DNA was put through the Thermocycler (amplifies DNA through Polymerase Chain Reactions, aka PCR) and the Nanodrop (estimates DNA concentration).

✨ I’m beyond excited to be an artist-in-residence @coalesce_biological_art at the University at Buffalo! This winter, I’ll be extracting Teto’s DNA from his beloved pickup truck (!!) and stepping fully into my soft girl science era 💅🏽🔬 I’ll be in Buffalo from late January through mid-March — if you know of any cozy furnished sublets, ceramic co-ops, or amazing food + drink spots, send them my way.✨ taken in Buffalo, New York by @_az__za_

✨𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘥𝘦 𝘩𝘪𝘮𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 has been acquired by the Seattle Art Museum and is currently on view in 𝘙𝘰𝘰𝘮 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘈𝘯𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘭 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 through November 1, 2026.

It’s surreal to see my work standing alongside artworks and objects that have endured such deep time.

Endless gratitude to Pam McClusky, curator of African and Oceanic Art, for championing this piece—and to the incredible team @bradleyertaskiran_ for ensuring its safe journey from Montreal to its new home in Seattle.✨ taken in Seattle Art Museum by @_az__za_

Toronto, I miss you. I have some new works showing @art_toronto this year with @bradleyertaskiran_ — Booth B30.

It was also Cairo’s first time assisting in the studio and let’s just say… she was torn up, lol. Pretty sure she thought she got dropped into the wrong family. Sunny, of course, was unbothered — she already knows the drill. Cairo will get there. taken in Metro Toronto Convention Centre by @_az__za_
