Birth of Dusk, 2026, is a black stoneware portrait bust made from a mold of a 3-D scan of the ancient Egyptian seated statue of Lady Sennuwy, a Middle Kingdom noblewoman. Over four thousand years old, the granodiorite statue was moved from Egypt to present-day Sudan three thousand years ago. Excavated from the tomb of a Nubian king in 1913, the statue is now located at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. A recurring character in El Siddique’s work, the statue has gone on journeys that mirror the artist’s own migration experience.  Azza El Siddique; Birth of Dusk, 2026. This week, we announced the 2026 Joan Mitchell Fellows: 15 artists from throughout the US working within the evolving fields of painting and sculpture. You may be wondering: How does an artist become a Joan Mitchell Fellow? To select artists for the Fellowship, the Foundation uses a nomination and jury process. Each spring, we invite a diverse group of artists and arts professionals from all corners of the U.S. to nominate artists who are making important contributions to artistic and cultural discourse, are deserving of greater national recognition, and would benefit from the resources provided by the Fellowship at this moment in their lives and practices. For 2026, the Foundation invited 125 nominators hailing from 48 states, Puerto Rico, and Washington, D.C.—41% of whom identify as working artists—to participate. We received 169 nominations. The nominated artists are then invited to submit online applications, which are evaluated by a jury of artists and arts professionals who select a final group of 15 Fellows. The jurors for the 2026 Fellows were: - Juan William Chávez, artist and activist, St. Louis @jwchavez - Glenn Goldberg, artist, New York @glennandgoldberg - Jonell Logan, Executive Director and Curator, @tephra_ica, Reston, VA @jonell_logan - Daisy Nam, Zlot Family Director and Chief Curator, @wattisarts, San Francisco @daisynam - Susan York, sculptor, Santa Fe @susanyork.studio “As a former @joanmitchellfdn grant recipient, it was especially meaningful to return—this time as a juror—and take part in selecting this year's cohort alongside an extraordinary panel,” reflected Juan William Chávez. “I am proud to have contributed to the selection of a group of artists whose work resonates powerfully with the complexities and urgencies of our time.” Daisy Nam noted, “Among the applications we considered for the Fellowship, the range of practices, processes, materials, interests, geographies, and backgrounds was astounding. While it was a struggle to select only 15 artists, I am deeply inspired by the fierce drive, persistence, and courage of all the artists who applied.” Pictured: Details of artwork by the 2026 #JoanMitchellFellows. 15 artworks in a composite grid, including paintings, sculptures, weavings, beadwork and installations.

Azza El Siddique’s Begin in smoke, End in ashes Pt. II (2019–25), featured in The Aldrich Decennial: I am what is around me, explores ritual, memory, and transformation through a material-driven practice. Working across sculpture and installation, El Siddique draws from Sudanese perfumery, Nubian and Egyptian histories, and Islamic mortuary rituals to investigate themes of mortality and memorialization. Through materials such as bisque-fired clay and iron oxide, the work embraces processes of change and decay, revealing the passage of time as both a physical and emotional force. Her work contributes to the diverse artistic voices shaping Connecticut’s contemporary art landscape, bringing histories, materials, and cultural traditions into conversation within the state’s vibrant creative community. Azza El Siddique, Begin in smoke, End in ashes Pt. II, 2019–25 On view through January 10, 2027. @_az__za_ @bradleyertaskiran_ @amysmithstewart @cmonachino

So excited to see the Aldrich’s inaugural decennial exhibition, “I Am What Is Around Me”. The show will return every 10 years and features artists living and working in Connecticut. @amy_smithstewart and @cmonachino did an incredible, thoughtful job of visiting artists across the state and choosing the 40 in the show. Go see the decennial now through January 10, and read more about how the show came together in my piece for the New York Times 😊📰

Azza El Siddique’s sculpture is shaped as much by process as by hand.  The surface has been eroded, representing the passage of time, presence of change, and the inherent evolution of materials.  In our client’s home, the piece reveals itself over time and brings this sense of transformation into daily life. @azadehelmizadeh @bradleyertaskiran_ Press: @archdigest
