this past year gave me stamps in my passport, the end of my twenties, a lovely (if temperamental) apartment in brooklyn, long nights with friends, lazy days with family, and a slightly clearer understanding of who i am and what i want in my future. ⁣
⁣
stepping into 2026 hoping to be more grounded, grateful, and open to new things. and if i happen to read more (outside of work), that would also be much appreciated. 🫶🏾 by @_bibliotherapy

every time i think about this book (lovingly acquired at a @seenlibrary pop-up), i think of how one of my work friends insisted that the apple tv severance team should be sued for having a work-related show of the same name. i think she was mostly joking. by @_bibliotherapy

...y'all i don't even know how to talk about "ghost fish" without sounding a little haunted myself. this novel is like a sleeper wave; the waters are calm at first and then suddenly you’re drowning in it.⁣
⁣
this is a book about grief, absolutely. but also about sisterhood, memory, loneliness, and what it means to try to start over when the people who knew you best are gone. it's about love (messy, tender, transdimensional) and identity. the plot sounds bananas if you try to describe it out loud—"a young woman haunted by her sister's death, who starts to believe that her beloved sibling has returned to her in the form of a ghost fish"—but on the page it is lush and grounded and weirdly believable.⁣
⁣
reading this felt like standing barefoot in cold mud. you're chilled, maybe a little unsettled, but very alive. there were moments that physically made me wince, others that made me want to underline whole paragraphs and send them to my childhood self like: “see? you're not crazy. this is grief.”⁣
⁣
the prose is stunning. not flashy, but so precise. the author really took her time with this one. and the imagery? dreamy, eerie, unforgettable. i will never look at a pickle jar (or y'all who like to put water in your empty bonne maman jars) the same way again.⁣
⁣
if you’ve ever lost someone and then thought you saw them out of the corner of your eye (at a bus stop, in a store, in a dream), "ghost fish" is for you. it’s brilliant.
⁣
i will be talking about this book for the rest of my life. thank you and goodbye. by @_bibliotherapy

is it struggle season for anyone else? it seems like the days have been moving as slow as molasses, and i've just been weighed down with a general life funk. my comfort shows aren't bringing comfort, my favorite foods aren't bringing joy, and i can't finish a book for fun to save my life.⁣ what do you guys usually do to ease yourself out of a life slump? any advice is welcome. ⁣⁣

finally finished "black in blues" by imani perry—a beautifully written dive into how the color blue carries the weight of Black history, music, and emotion. her poetic, lyrical style makes it feel like you’re listening to the blues as much as reading about them. part reflection, part cultural study, and most definitely worth slowing down for. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
i just started "ghost fish" by stuart pennebaker & i'm rereading my annotated arc of "babel" by r.f. kuang. ⁣

last year was full of challenges, but it was also full of small wins, new opportunities, and, possibly most importantly, good food. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
in august, i finally moved to new york city. for work, yes, but also to annoy my friends in person. it's been rough getting used to the... everything. my friends, new and old, have been there for me through it all. i'm blessed to have so many bright souls in my life to make the tough parts a little easier.⁣
⁣
i hope to meet more of my bookstagram friends in 2025. ⁣⁣i hope to do a lot of things in 2025. taken in New York, New York by @_bibliotherapy

everyone's posting their 2024 wrapped or the hundred books they want to read in 2025, and i'm trying not to be ashamed of the fact that i barely read for pleasure last year. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
reading what i can for fun and continuing to explore this massive, weird, amazing city are the only non-work goals i have for 2025. i won't put pressure on myself with a goodreads challenge or anything like that. as far as books i 𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐞 to read in the upcoming year, here's a little list: ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
01 glorious exploits by ferdia lennon (suggested by @litgirl & found on a take shelf at work)⁣⁣
02 bury our bones in the midnight soil by @veschwab
03 the left hand of darkness by ursula k. le guin⁣⁣
04 open throat by henry hoke⁣⁣
05 severance by ling ma (picked up at @seenlibrary 's nyc pop up) ⁣⁣
06 the dragon republic by @kuangrf (i'm finally ready, y'all) ⁣⁣

alexis henderson has had me in her clutches since "the year of the witching," and I never want to be let go. as her self-proclaimed biggest fan and a lover of dark academia, I knew that "an academy for liars" would be one of my top reads of the year. I was right, of course. I finished reading a couple of weeks ago, but holding off on my review almost made it seem like it wasn't over yet. ⁣
⁣
when I say I devoured this book... I started it while waiting at my gate in the airport in south carolina, and by the time my flight touched down in new york, I was clutching my kindle to my chest and lamenting the fact that my journey with lennon was over. ⁣
⁣
every time I thought I knew what was coming next, alexis grabbed me by the collar and yanked me backwards. like, bestie, you're getting ahead of yourself. there are plenty of magical, speculative dark academia novels out there, but "an academy for liars" is its own beast. familiar and unfamiliar at the same time, to the point where you're crawling out of your skin when you can't turn the page quick enough.⁣
⁣
I can't find fault with a single element of this book. the world-building? incredible as always. plot? she never misses. don't even get me started on how fully fleshed out each of the characters were. these were real, solid individuals to me for almost 500 pages. and the romance? for perhaps the first time ever, I was just as fascinated by the forbidden love story as I was by the speculative storyline in a book. well, maybe. lennon and dante have my entire heart. ⁣
⁣
henderson did her big one with this book. she poured so much soul into this that if I stabbed my kindle while reading it, it would bleed. "an academy of liars" is a masterclass in dark academia, and I could not recommend it enough. ⁣
⁣
@lexish , another one, thank you 🫶🏾 ⁣

many thanks to @acebookspub , @netgalley , and @berkleypub for sharing an advanced digital copy with me in exchange for an honest review. taken in New York, New York by @_bibliotherapy

inspired by @dreambabypress 's love/hate list. ⁣
⁣
instead of things I love/hate in life, I wanted to make a little list of things I love/hate in books. ⁣
⁣
would love to know your thoughts! what do you love to see when you read? what do you hate to see? if I see miscommunication being the entire plot in a book one more time... i'm committing ars*n. ⁣
