All moments spent with nature and wildlife are special, but getting to witness moments like this feels like such a blessing.

With new life emerging daily and animal parents frantically hunting to support their young, please be extra cautious when driving. This season I have seen several roadkill foxes and it absolutely breaks my heart. There may be more lives dependent on their survival.

A sad photo with a long story, but a happy ending. The other week during an afternoon walk at a local park, we noticed a trash can floating in the lake. There is so much wildlife that call this lake home, including a mated pair of bald eagles. Towards the end of our walk, we heard the eagles calling to each other as they flew down to the shore of the lake to bathe and get a drink. One of the eagles seemed to take an interest in the trash can, and hopped over to check it out. After bathing itself, it perched on a nearby branch to dry its feathers. For a second, I debated photoshopping out the eye sore, but it felt disingenuous.

This sight really bothered me, and I spent the next few days calling around to see who was responsible for having the trash removed. After calling over 5 different offices, I finally came in contact with the town's DPW and they sent out a crew to look for the can via rowboat. It was located in a spot that was inaccessible by trail and too far down the lake to get to with the boat. So the local fire department decided to run a rescue drill in the lake to extract the trash can.

After a week and a half of calling around and pestering the right people, it was finally removed. Obviously it wasn't put there on purpose, but its upsetting how the carelessness of humans can negatively impact our wildlife. I couldn't just witness this sad juxtaposition of our nation's greatest wildlife emblem basically bathing in trash. Its a small thing, but I am glad that I was able to do something about it.

It’s been a while since I’ve photographed an owl, and these colder months ahead have me so excited for the return of this magnificent winter visitor, the short-eared owl 🦉

This winter evening in early 2024 was one of my first experiences seeing owls in the wild, let alone witnessing them doing what they do best. I fell in love with the way they effortlessly glide over the grasslands, suddenly stopping mid-flight to dive down and catch voles for dinner. I used to dread the colder months, but these birds have given me something to look forward to each winter, and a whole new appreciation for the season.

Backlogged as heck on editing some recent work, so here is a throwback from last spring. This was taken during our trip to the Pacific North West, and we got lucky enough to find a fox den on our first night. We watched a litter of fox kits play until the sun went down. I caught this mischevious little one in the act of digging a massive hole. Can't wait for next kit season 🦊

Another pose from my encounter with this beautiful mink at the end of August. This was one of the handful of times I have ever seen a mink, and the only time getting some solid, usable images. Any moment spent in nature is a treat for me, but this really made my day.

Checking in on these handsome bucks from late August🦌

Velvety antlers, quiet cemetery visits, and two beautiful boys doing their thing. Anytime I visit the cemetary, I always see these two together. I always keep a special eye on the one with the permanently broken leg. He’s tough, but I can’t help but worry about him. So glad to see him still out there ❤️

Finally sharing this series of images from one of my favorite fox encounters from our trip to the Pacific North West last year. Just as we were about to leave this spot to grab breakfast, I saw movement through the tall, golden grass. All of a sudden, this vixen with two melanistic kits in tow came bounding through the field and trotted right past me.

I was never so annoyed to have my teleconverter on, and would have appreciated the more environmental view of the scene. But I still was amazed by the beauty of the encounter and how lucky I was to be there. I was battling harsh mid-day heat haze, so that on top of the tight crop almost kept me from posting these. But not all photos need to be tact sharp, and sometimes just capturing the moment is good enough 🦊
