Some days I get really overwhelmed by:
life hurdles
emotions
health stuff
did I remember to take my meds?
did I miss your birthday?
getting older
my dog getting older
my parents getting older
bills
school shootings
returning texts messages
the state of the western world
global warming
when is DCC 9 coming out?
is AI making us stupid?
am I a bad person if I used AI today?
putting records away
laundry
etc
etc
and then I remember that I get to do this thing for a living and I get over myself really fucking fast.

This Memorial Day Monday we have a very special all vinyl edition of Motown On Mondays Portland as we welcome the dynamic duo of @_bridrennon_ and Derek Smith @waxingpoeticpdx two heavy hitting hosts of the best radio station in town, @kmhd_jazz_radio they have DEEP crates and absolutely crushed their set last time they played!

Hi, I’m Bri! I host KMHD’s weekday afternoon drive-time show Takin’ Off, as well as Stepping Out on weekend evenings. I have the greatest job in the world: crafting ten hours of original programming each week that celebrates the rich history of Black American music and offers a sanctuary of sound for our listeners. I’m not just a DJ: I’m also my own producer and board operator on air, and off the air, I work on compliance reporting and other administrative tasks for the station.

What listeners may not know is that after four years of helping KMHD reaching new highs in ratings, audience size, and fundraising, I make negligibly more than when I started. I’m still paid well below industry standard and far less than peers at comparable stations. My pay doesn’t reflect Portland’s cost of living, which means that on top of my full-time role, I work late nights and weekends DJing just to fill the gap.

Everyone wants to earn more, but that’s not what we’re asking for. I just want a livable wage that also reflects my work and experience - compensation in reasonable proportion to the high salaries of management.
We started bargaining with OPB nearly two years ago, and only now are they commissioning a pay study, something they have told us is a necessary tool to begin this discussion in earnest.

I believe deeply in OPB and KMHD’s mission. Public media is one of the last bastions of free speech and democracy: news and culture by and for the people. I want to keep doing this work sustainably, for the long term, because I believe in it wholeheartedly. Supporting public radio means supporting the workers who make it happen.
