Premiering my first song at Holy Fools open mic this Thursday 🎤 @trainscendencemelbourne

I’ve spoken this one out a few times as poetry, but never with the backing track and NEVER with the chorus where I actually sing.

I’ve been on a massive journey with my voice and this moment feels deeply scary and exciting, and more vulnerable than any other time i’ve stepped on a mic.

If you wonder why I keep saying “higher purpose” and what it actually means to me, it’s this.

I could feel the pain of the woman next to me during a medicine ceremony in Peru. She laid there as I wrote poem after poem with her as my inspiration.

One year ago, I went on a particularly transformative run through the countryside after moving to Australia.

I listened to the album ‘The Line Is a Curve’ by @kaetempest while on that run and immediately vomited a six-page poem upon returning to my school bus. It was one of those magic moments when the pen just keeps going.

I then read that poem aloud at an open mic. My first time reading anything on a mic, after years of sticking strictly to the art of bar spitting.

Freestyle rap has been my gateway into poetry, singing, and performance art. I was a freestyler long before I ever had the ovaries to call myself a musician or a performer.

After three years of freestyling, I’ve finally put pen to paper and written my first song, Hummingbird.

Though it took me one year to create this song from start to finish, I’d say that time consisted of about 1% writing/structuring the song, 5% practising the chorus again and again while teetering on the verge of deleting the vocals altogether, and 94% procrastinating the next step of the song out of the deep insecurity of putting my voice out there like this.

And thanks to the support of my greatest inspiration @_flashpoetry_, pushing and holding me through each of these gnarly, uncomfortable stages, while teaming with our epic producer @delipres_music, the song is here.

Hummingbird is my grand, yet humble, blast through the ozone layer into the world of songwriting. It’s a story of who I am, where I come from, a few anecdotes on the world I see around me, and one audacious call to action.

I wish every woman could go learn who they are outside of the circle that taught them how to learn.

The solo journey is an initiation into womanhood. This can look different for everyone. No, you do not need to buy a one-way ticket to Thailand and shave your head (who, me?). This could mean moving to a town in another province or state, or going on a solo road trip through your home country for the summer.

The solo journey is where you meet the next layer of your becoming.

When you come back, you think differently about what you want your life’s work to be and what and who you want to spend your precious, limited time on.

Getting out of your hometown is the best preparation for lifes most important decisions.

My 85 year old self is speaking to me from the future, begging me for a daily boogie. We need more reverence for the endless opportunities to throw ass in a great outfit.

Bonus: put on a mask and see what it does to your moves. When I wear a mask, my steeze and unhinged-ness increases significantly. Its comparable to the movie “The Mask” 🎭

It’s as if the clothing has a spirit and it infuses into the dance! Anyone else experience this?
