When someone like Chris Chase speaks on performance training, you listen.

Chris is one of the most progressive minds in sports performance and someone who understands exactly what high-level athletes need from their training equipment.

In this conversation, Chris breaks down why the XPT Motorized Resistance System stands out as one of the most robust motorized resistance platforms he’s worked with — including the amount of resistance and training versatility the system can deliver.

That means a lot coming from someone who works at the highest levels of performance.

Much respect to Chris for taking the time to put the XPT MRS through its paces and share his perspective.

Watching game and training film, especially the athletic work, is an underrated practice. I think it helps inform decisions in other areas of training prescription, especially the general stuff further away from sport. What shapes, joint positions, and ranges of motion do we see here? Do we see big ranges of motion in extreme flexion? Do we see ass to grass squats? Since we don’t, maybe we can accept that the big ROM stuff can be super general and service the biology of tissues like muscles and tendons. Since we accept this work is general and the function is found in the tissue adaptions themselves, maybe we can be ok with constraints and machines to make tough ranges of motions and exhausting sets easier for athletes to perform. Maybe we consider our max, dynamic, plyometric, multi directional speed, and top end speed efforts as more sport specific. If so, maybe we can get away with more shallow ranges of motion that mimic the sport, can be safer, and most importantly, can more easily be loaded with trainable intensities. by @the.xpt

Acceleration is not a position. Acceleration is simply a formula that calculates the rate of change in velocity. By taking the delta between the final and initial velocity and dividing that by the time period of that change, we can evaluate how quickly a person can increase speed in a particular situation. The capacity to accelerate well is obviously important in sports, but I see too much emphasis on kinematics, or the “mechanics” of acceleration as people like to say. Watch film of any sport and see that athletes change speeds from a variety of positions. Some of those positions are even considered “bad” by all those functional S&Cs out there. This footage provides a taste of the small, purposeful variety of starting positions and situations I use in training. When using hard starts, the 3 primary starts I use are a linear start w front foot push, linear start with back foot push, and a lateral start using a directional step. You can build from that foundation. You notice that I’m super upright during the back foot push. This goes against the “acceleration lean” that is believed to be necessary. Again, watch any basketball game and you’ll see players with their eyes up on the action, in upright positions, and still accelerating successfully. Track and field is not team sports. by @the.xpt

Some upper body repetition efforts to improve the biological underpinnings of absolute strength. When attempting to train all relevant training qualities for life activities (aka hybrid athleticism 🥴), some qualities must get as minimal a dose as possible to be time and stress efficient. Since upper body hypertrophy is less important than other things, figuring out the minimal effective dose is important to save energy for other work. As many now talk about, the work done needed to maintain or improve muscle size and strength is less than we think. 2-3 sets per week at 0-2 RIR of each exercise that I believe is important has provided enough stimulus to send the signal. This leaves time and stress reserves for me to maximize the max, dynamic, plyometric, multi-directional speed, and top end speed efforts that deserve their own minimal effective dosing for a well rounded program. by @the.xpt

More movement doesn’t always mean more function 👇🏻

@_chris_chase (S&C coach, formerly Memphis Grizzlies) on why constrained upper body flywheel work often loads the target tissue better than the “functional” version.

Integrate the legs and it becomes difficult to know how much load is going where. The upper body ends up assisted, mechanical tension drops, and the adaptation you programmed for never shows up. Add a few stabilising contact points instead and impulse demand to the upper body climbs significantly.

The functionality is not in the exercise itself; it is found in the adaptation that is meant to occur.

Comment ‘Chris’ for the full article.

Is your deceleration training “Instagram-ready” or “Game-ready”?
We all talk about deceleration, but few can coach it on the court under fire
。The real bottleneck isn’t always how a player moves—it’s their force production capacity
。
My latest deck, “The Kinetic Paradigm,” dives into: ✅ 10m ADA & 5010 Slide Sprint: Separating early vs. late deceleration kinetics
。 ✅ Kinetics > Kinematics: Why fixing a “valgus” might just be a quad strength bottleneck in isolation
。 ✅ The “Concierge” Trap: Why multi-sport coaching principles are the secret to elite 1-on-1 results
。
Check the slides to see how we’re bridging the gap between the weight room and the court.

Rethinking Change of Direction Testing 🏀📊

Linear ADA tests show max capacity, but is that how athletes actually cut on the court?

Former NBA Strength Coach Chris Chase breaks down why he moved beyond standard straight-line deceleration to evaluate Late Deceleration Kinetics:

🔹 10m ADA: Tests raw impact capacity under extreme forces (Early Decel).

🔹 5010 Slide-Sprint: Isolates the final foot contact outside the center of mass (Late Decel) at sport-relevant velocities.

Stop testing messy changes. Start measuring actionable kinetics.

Have shifted more slow strength stuff to lower volume / higher intensity after flirting with higher volumes for enough time. Maybe this shift facilitates some myofibrillar hypertrophy to better serve as a foundation to enhance speed and reactive strengths from. 4-5 sets of 3-6 reps on most stuff (still a bit higher vol on calf raises). Leveraging constraints to increase stability and improve consistency of strategy. Making exercises less complex in this manner can make it easier, and less risky to target intended tissues with sufficient enough intensity and effort to have a chance at causing an adaptation…especially with high level athletes / novice lifters. When attempting to work at greater than 85% 1RM w high RPE working sets, and trying to touch on enough relevant movements/muscles/joints, hitting 4-5 constrained options can make for a smooth journey through progressive overload on days like these within the phase. by @the.xpt

Where does flywheel training fit in a high performance program?

Chris Chase, former Director of Performance for the Memphis Grizzlies is a long-time user of Exerfly technology. In this blog, Chris shares his experience from his years testing, measuring, and refining where flywheel fits in a high-performance program.

His conclusion: it’s not a replacement for heavy lifting or explosive power work. It’s a bridge. A way to expose athletes to high impulse loads at moderate speeds, building the capacity to absorb, redirect, and accelerate that sits right at the heart of change of direction in sport.

Exerfly’s Motorized Technology is the piece that makes it all possible. Find out why in the full article.

👉 Comment ‘Chris’ and we’ll send you the link to the full write up.

Just out here facilitating 10s of views on the Tube with this scintillating content. Just posted a new video (LINK IN BIO), detailing the pros and cons of isotonic, isokinetic, and variable resistances. I also explain the 3 different types of strength curves and why isotonic barbell and dumbbell resistance fails to accommodate any of them in most instances. I throw in a few hot takes about the future of electronic resistance and why barbell, plate, and dumbbell weight will get phased out sooner than we think. I hope you guys continue to enjoy the unemployment cinematic universe and all this free time that needs to be taken up with something 🥴. by @the.xpt

Just some practice what you preach type ish. Plyometric, multi-directional speed, and top end speed efforts on a Friday afternoon at the ol’ local Gold’s gym. The unemployment chronicles continue and let’s just say I can’t wait to get back into a proper training facility 😂. by @the.xpt
