I’ve written a list and I’m checking it twice

So join me on this adventure to regain some skills, learn and experience some new things and just all around have a great ol’ time.

If you don’t know who I am, I’m Chris Bostock, I’m a retired professional acrobat as well as dabbling in anything and everything under the sun I could get my hands on.

I love learning weird skills, travelling and experiencing new things - but that’s something I’ve not done for a while now as my career, family and life has taken hold.

I’m not casting those aside by any means but I do want to start doing things again, seeing things, seeing people, learning things and regaining some of the old skills I used to have.

So please give me a follow and join me on this journey to do some cool stuff. taken in Chris Bostock - Personal Training and Movement Instruction by @_chrisbostock

This is a prime example of why when you’re in a safe set up it’s worth just pushing for the extra reps.

If this was a squat I might have said leave it at 12 after that rep was a significant drop in speed - but when you’re on a machine where you can fail comfortably go for it.

The 13th rep was smooth and the 14th was the failure point. 2 reps makes a big difference in progression and growth in the long run. taken in Chris Bostock - Personal Training and Movement Instruction by @_chrisbostock

You’re not “stiff” you’re just lacking strength

Seems backwards right - you’ve always been told you need to stretch to get more range of motion and that’s true - kinda - you need to put your body through as full of a range of motion as you can and slowly progress to developing more range.

BUT

That range doesn’t come from your muscles getting longer or loose - it comes from your body trusting that you can be safe there and the one thing that allows your body to feel safe there is strength and stability in that new range.

Stretching endlessly will develop flexibility in the short term - what keeps mobility for the long term is developing strength and stability in your end ranges.

Whenever I need clients to develop more range of motion in an area the first question I now as myself is “how do I load this with weight or make it a resistance exercise”, since asking that question a few years ago I have been able to develop clients flexibility, stability ten fold WHILE decreasing injuries and pain.

So if you’re currently “stiff” don’t just think I need to stretch this increase think; how do I make this position challenging from a resistance perspective WHILE I go through this range of motion by @_chrisbostock

Honestly sometimes the whole sessions goes by and we haven’t talked about exercises at all, I’ve not really instructed or coached a client on what they’re doing or how to do it - we’ve just had good, solid conversations about anything and everything.

I used to look at those sessions and think man I’m getting paid for this and I actually didn’t give them any value at all that session, I didn’t really help them with their exercises or do any hands on teaching etc - but now I realise years later that actually I was doing exactly what I was supposed to be doing.

Being a support frame for my clients

Sometimes sessions are very tactical, tangiable and coaching heavy - but sometimes it’s just chatting about their life, their family, their holiday, their work . . . anything and everything

It’s a place for clients to feel comfortable, it’s a place for clients to vent, to focus on themselves and to progress (supported) in an area they feel they need help with.

That help might be technique - that help might be that they just needed someone to be there.

I pride myself on my knowledge and ability to communicate technical things effectively to clients - but I’ve come to realise that my real superpower is that I’m actually just a decent person to be around and clients feel comfortable around me. I think that’s way more important for their development than someone who is a robot.

Soz you can’t afford this

That’s what people think OR they don’t want people to look at them like they’re boujee but the truth is just like any other profession a PT is there to fulfil a service that you’re can’t/won’t/don’t know how to do

I think there’s a stigma that people either don’t want to work with a coach because they don’t want others to look at them like they don’t know what they’re doing OR they have and they’ve been burned by a shit coach in the past

I’m sorry for both of those things, but we’re not all like that and screw whoever thinks that way about what you do/need anyway.

We’re hear to help you get to the place you want to be in a sustainable, enjoyable and effective way - and in the grand scheme of things - very inexpensive. You wouldn’t think twice about paying for your car to be fixed but the vessel you’re living in for the rest of your life? Yeah definitely won’t pay for that hah.

Just do it, doesn’t have to be me, but reach out to a coach or whoever you need to help you and sod everyone else by @_chrisbostock
