At first glance, this canyon looks empty but if you zoom in, you can spot the prehistoric residents hiding.

These vertical rock walls aren’t just cliffs; they are 180-million-year-old ancient ocean floors that were buckled and folded when the African and European tectonic plates collided 21 million years ago.

Nesting safely inside these massive tectonic folds are wild Rock Doves (Columba livia). This ancient bird breed has lived in these exact Spanish gorges for over 15,000 years. The very breed that helped Charles Darwin prove his theory of evolution.

He proved that all domestic pigeons evolved from this single wild ancestor, showing that just as humans breed animals for specific traits, nature uses harsh environments like this to slowly adapt and change species over millions of years so they can survive.

The Gaitanes Gorge is a thriving biodiversity hotspot where ancient geology meets a sanctuary of wild life including giant, real-life “dinosaurs” with three-metre wingspan griffon vultures, golden eagles, falcons, Iberian ibex and river otters.

Walking between boardwalks pinned to the interior chasm walls and trails that are cut directly into the canyon floor is a very beautiful, surreal experience. You realise you aren’t just looking at a landscape you are standing inside a physical timeline where the Earth and its creatures have spent millions of years quietly mastering the art of survival.

I recommend the adventure!
