“Sowing Worlds” in “Occupancy,” the inaugural exhibition at the MIT School of Architecture and Planning (SA+P), celebrating the opening of its new home in the adaptive reuse of the historic Metropolitan Storage Warehouse, designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro.

Sowing Worlds is a speculative research project on food insecurity in East Boston — a neighborhood of food apartheid, a historical immigration gateway, and a community sitting at the intersection of landfills, highways, and Logan Airport. The average cost of a meal is 1.4× the national average. The median household income falls below it. The food distribution landscape is a paradox of plenty: the U.S. wastes 30–40% of its food supply while more than 40 million people go hungry, unevenly along lines of class, race, gender, and ethnicity.

Food insecurity is not a problem of scarcity. It is a problem of distribution — spatial, political, metabolic.

Through five drawings — Mouth of the River, Filling Lands, Grounding Logan, Ghost Kitchens, and LifeStock — the project proposes to reorganize forms of food metabolism across East Boston: to sow sustenance and satiation, and to replenish the domains of water, soil, and air that sustain life for all.

Crocodile Tears, narrated by Anna Tsing – Episode 7 in the Elephant in the Room series.

The fable traces the crocodile transformation along with that of the coast of Singapore – from revered tidal keeper, to silenced beast, museum speciment, farm-bred commodity for meat and skin. And yet, a figure of refusal : what refuse to stay burried beneath land reclamation and air-conditioning.

We’re wrapping up a year-long DESIGN EARTH project in the Elephant in the Room series—and we’re excited to share more soon!

The project was seeded with a workshop in Singapore in June 2025, organized by NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore at the invitation of Karin Oen, and offered alongside Kelly Koh.

Centering the Malayan tiger and saltwater crocodile, the workshop moved between the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum, Long Kuan Hung Crocodile Farm, Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, and other sites.

Together, participants assembled a media archive and imagined new fabulous figures through which to encounter Singapore’s environmental histories—and futures.

🟡 Introducing ‘Brava!’, a studio led by @_designearth as part of International Emerging Workshop from 🗓️ 19 to 27 June 2026 at the UIA World Congress of Architects Barcelona 2026: “Becoming. Architectures for a planet in transition.”

Brava, a 20-meter-long whale skeleton beached on the Costa Brava in 1862, is one of the Museu de Ciències Naturals de Barcelona’s most emblematic objects. Brava! follows the fin whale’s displacement from Mediterranean waters to Barcelona’s museums, showing how her bones moved in step with the city’s own expansion. As walls came down, the Eixample advanced, fairs remade the Ciutadella, and the coast was recast for leisure and spectacle, the whale was repeatedly relocated—from stranded shore to university cabinet, from Martorell to the Dragons’ Castle, and finally to the Fòrum building designed by Herzog et de Meuron. Through these museum moves, the fable reveals how Barcelona’s growth kept reorganizing both land and sea, turning the whale into a witness of urban ambition while asking what it would mean to see the Mediterranean not as the city’s front street, but as a living world of currents, canyons, migrants, plankton, whales, and humans.

The workshop curated a media archive on the specimen, museums, city and coastal region and developed a speculative fabulation in visual scroll and textual narrative forms. The exhibition is open to the public through 19 July.

Curatorial team: Pau Bajet, Maria Giramé, Mariona Benedito, Tomeu Ramis, Pau Sarquella and Carmen Torres (@bajegirame, @marionabenedito, @flexo_arquitectura, @sarquellatorres).
Workshop teaching assistant: Helena Armengol.
Workshop participants: Mario Beltrame, Nafisah Binti Ezam, Margareth Chavez Cutti, Daniel Eslava, Ebru Evin, Erdem Karaçay, Luke Shimon Lee, Ilaria Maurelli, Sevin Ozuguz, Jana Sami, Álvaro Sánchez González, Aya Sellam, Irene Valdés Martín.

What happens when we try to engineer the climate?

The Planet After Geoengineering by Design Earth portrays Earth following the deployment of five speculative technologies. Through stunning animation, the film contextualizes our planetary control ambitions against the backdrop of historical climate-control projects.

“Planet After Geoengineering” is in “Of the Earth,” now open at Diriyah Art Futures. The exhibition runs through 16 May 2026.

Curated by Irini Papadimitriou, Of the Earth explores the complex and entangled relationships between technology and the natural world, hybrid ecologies, and extractivism, while inviting us to sense the world with renewed attention, recognizing that futures we craft will depend on acknowledging our place within, not above, the vast networks of life that shape our planet.

⏱️ Last chance to visit Cosmograph before the exhibition closes on January 25, 2026 at the MIT Museum.

Over the show’s 16-month run, we have been lucky to host colleagues, students, friends, DE team members, and family. Thank you to everyone who visited. We captured some visits (when we remembered!) and these candid snapshots, however blurry, extend that sweet memory.

🙏🏽 We give thanks to all those who made this exhibition possible — Leila W. Kinney, Evan Ziporyn, Ann Neuman, Michael John Gorman, Debbie Douglas, and all the staff of CAST and MIT Museum.

✨Cosmograph: Speculative Fictions for the New Space Age brings together 4 projects that examine how planetary-scale technologies — such as space mining, geo-engineering, and orbital infrastructure — reshape life on Earth and beyond. From space elevators to asteroid mining, the exhibition blurs the line between fact and fiction to ask urgent questions about who designs the next space age — and at what cost.
