How did we get here? Really, that would be a genuine question from 6 year old me. Birthdays, tend to come with all their reflections and honestly? It’s a beautiful thing to look back at every turn in the journey from two decades ago. You see now, a storyteller, but he once painted, sang, wrote. And while, I ask myself and marvel at how much I’ve evolved I can’t help but say this song? A while ago, I took a trip to IITA, Ibadan, and it was so timely because I recently got the Fujifilm XH2, and it was the perfect opportunity to test out some new recipes. Went wandering with @wanderwithobedd over the weekend and now I can finally tick IITA, Ibadan, off my travel list. I’ve been filming a lot lately, and seeing how my own life experiences come to play when I interact with other subjects. On My Own Terms.In my beginning days of practicing cinema, one thing I do is just observe Lagos, using it as a backdrop for my thoughts. Not shooting with a plan, just watching, Lagos doing what Lagos does. A woman with a sack of bottles by the water. Boys racing each other into the surf, laughing like the sea owes them nothing. A man behind a gate, jaw tight, somewhere else in his head. A boy alone with his board, watching the waves like they might say something back.I kept thinking about how much of what I love about this city is the laughter — the way joy here isn’t naive, it’s chosen. Worn like something. A soft kind of defiance against everything that doesn’t let up.So when I came across Ofem Ubi’s poem “LOL,” it felt like it had already seen what I was filming. He writes laughter and vanity as endurance — soft acts of defiance in the face of everyday struggle. Not denial. A decision.That’s what this is. Not a poem read over footage, but footage and poem arguing the same point from two directions: that carrying something heavy and choosing how you carry it are two different things.
