Handel wrote Orlando in under three weeks, November 1732. The role of Zoroastro didn’t even exist in the original libretto. He created it specifically for Antonio Montagnana, the Venetian bass, trained by the same teacher as Farinelli. Then Montagnana left and the opera wasn’t performed again for nearly 200 years.
“Lascia Amor, e siegui Marte” was written for one man’s voice and it shows. Just cello, violone, and harpsichord underneath. The Handel bass line drives rather than supports. There’s nothing to hide behind. The repeated “combatti, combatti” is not a suggestion.
Zoroastro is the only rational character in an opera full of jealousy and madness. He doesn’t exist in Ariosto’s original poem. Handel invented a sorcerer to tell the greatest warrior in literature to stop being lovesick and go back to war. This is his opening argument: Leave love and follow war!
Now recognized as a direct precursor to Sarastro in Mozart’s Magic Flute. The same name and the same archetype, only 58 years earlier. #opera #handel by @_ericander_

Am 18. Oktober um 20 Uhr erklingen in der Berliner Philharmonie Mozarts c-Moll-Messe und Arvo Pärts Te Deum. Zwei Werke, die kaum unterschiedlicher sein könnten und sich doch auf ganz besondere Weise ergänzen.
Es ist unser 1. Abokonzert, und wir freuen uns riesig darauf! ✨

🇫🇷 ROSSINI / RODYNS : IN NORMANDY…
A wonderful few days at the Festival de Musique Ancienne of the @academiebach , rehearsing and performing Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle in its original version for voices, two pianos and harmonium…
👉A particularly special historical setting: Pleyel (1841), Érard (1845) and MY historical Mustel harmonium.
👉Even more remarkable, the Pleyel no. 8888 once belonged to the Pillet-Will family, for whom Rossini composed the Petite Messe Solennelle: bringing us remarkably close to the world in which this masterpiece was born.
👉With the wonderful Damask Vocal Quartet: @nikkitreurniet_soprano soprano, @marinefribourg mezzo-soprano, @hugohymas tenor & @_ericander_ baritone. Together with the choir of the Académie Bach, Rémy Cardinale & Gabrielle Resche on the historical pianos, under the direction of Nicolas Renaux
👉And even more special to have my son @krodyns there with me in France ❤️ : with a little time between rehearsals to visit @alpinecars in Dieppe, where my A110 (110/110) began its story. 🇫🇷🏁

Was passiert, wenn monumentale Klangpracht auf radikale Reduktion trifft?

Mozarts c-Moll-Messe ist Musik von großer Geste und persönlicher Geschichte: Für Constanze gedacht, als Gelübde komponiert und doch unvollendet geblieben. Bis heute fasziniert sie mit ihrer enormen emotionalen und musikalischen Kraft.

Arvo Pärts „Te Deum“ schlägt einen ganz anderen Ton an: klar, konzentriert, fast schwebend – und gerade in seiner Einfachheit von großer Intensität.

Zwei Werke, die unterschiedlicher kaum sein könnten. Und doch verbindet sie etwas: Musik, die weit über ihre Töne hinausreicht.

Am Sonntag, 22.3. um 18 Uhr ist es so weit:
Unser Passionskonzert mit französischer Musik des Impressionismus. Zu hören sind Werke von Poulenc, Duruflé und Lili Boulanger, die schon mit 23 Jahren verstorben ist und ganz berückende Musik hinterlassen hat.
Der Kammerchor Mannheim und die Sinfonietta Mannheim werden von tollen Solisten unterstützt:

A lovely Swiss week with @collegiumvocale.gent and kammerorchesterbasel.
Rhein romanticism • FC Basel winning while having the saltiest food I ever paid for • catching up with great friends, including @florevanmeerssche, who sang an absolutely wonderful solo • carousels • Lobgesang giving off heavy Salvation Army Framåt, Kristi Stridsmän vibes (if you know you know) • awkward selfies being even more awkward when you’re filming yourself.
