I am pleased to announce my exhibition ‘Ambulation’ opening this Saturday at @_escolar_ in Santa Rosa.

“Ambulation evokes international maritime flag signals and REAL identification card landscapes inside Escolar’s shipping container, resting on-site the redwood
coast of California. Using these two materials and terminals of American travel, the work explores how we might try to enter, feel, and depart from the abstractions that harm and restrict our movements together.”

𝗣𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: This new work examines Chiraag Bhakta’s experience as a young graphic designer in New York in the year 2001. The installation centers his growing awareness of the political and economic forces at work in the world around him, focusing on three distinct but related features of this timeframe: the termination of his employment at the end of the dot com boom, the September 11th attacks, and the creation of a poem by Amiri Baraka that abolished an institution. A 25th anniversary of these 3 moments.

The work in this show includes: Sound installation, Digital Collage, Photography, Sculpture, Found Object

This photograph was taken by Chiraag at age 23 in the act of getting laid off by his then boss at the tail end of the dot-com boom. This experience for him was a learning moment about disposable labor, and how actions like this protect capital accumulation during economic shifts.

“I entered the job market after graduating college with a BFA in Graphic Design during the Dot-com boom, when opportunities seemed limitless. I started working for a small design studio in the East Village (NY) that sold me on the print-related projects for the music industry I would be working on. That never happened. I ended up working on branding for online spaces for various corporations and start-ups. It wasn’t my favorite, but the money and debauchery in the work environment softened the blow.

Money was flowing during this era—investors poured cash into internet startups that had no revenue, no profits, and unproven business models. Like many small companies at that time, their workforce grew rapid by @_escolar_

We are pleased to present POINTS OF DEPARTURE by Chiraag Bhakta @pardonmyhindi This new work examines the artists experience as a young graphic designer in New York in the year 2001. Bhakta’s installation centers his growing awareness of the political and economic forces at work in the world around him, focusing on three distinct but related features of this timeframe: the termination of Bhakta’s employment at the end of the dot com boom, the September 11th attacks, and the creation of a poem by Amiri Baraka that abolished the position of New Jersey’s poet laureate.

The show will open Sunday, September 13th from 3-8 pm and closes September 25.

Chiraag Bhakta is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice is rooted in collecting objects, archival research, storytelling and collaboration in a variety of media including: printmaking, collage, photography and assemblage. Raised in an independent motel on a New Jersey freeway surrounded by a rotation of extended family, Bhakta received his BFA in graphic design from the Hartford Art School. Over the years, while working as a graphic designer, he has been exploring his personal work. Much of his art practice probes the residues that power leaves behind—how the architectures of empire linger in the mundane, and how stories fracture and recombine across borders. In doing so, he also unsettles the official lenses through which these histories are typically framed. by @_escolar_
