The Witch
by Freida McFadden
4 ⭐️
Buddy Read with @faithsnextchapter 🫶🏼🫶🏼

The Witch is a dual POV, easy to read thriller, that revolves around the 17th century mansion - Pemberton in Massachusetts.

In present day, Julia has moved in to help care for her grandmother and is confronted with memories of hearing voices visiting her in the middle of the night as a child when visiting Pemberton. Now as a young adult, she’s learning about Caroline, the ghost of a woman who used to live at Pemberton in the 1600’s, who was supposedly burned alive at the stake for being a witch. Caroline is the second POV of the book, and the story jumps back and forth between Julia in present day and Caroline in 1662.

This was my first Freida book, so I have nothing to compare it to in regard to her other work… so fresh perspective here. I thought it was a fun audiobook. I much more enjoyed Caroline’s POV chapters over Julia’s. Caroline’s part kept me engaged the entire book and Julia’s really didn’t get very interesting until the reveal at the end for me.

It was fun to try and guess what was going on, and I really only guessed one of the plot twists. The Witch is an enjoyable, quick read that has great vibes for spooky season.

My guess is that Freida’s books would never rate much higher than the 4 stars I’ve given to this one, which probably has more to do with the topic of the book being intriguing to me over the actual book itself.

@faithsnextchapter and I read the audio book of The Witch together and it was a really fun time bouncing theories back and forth as to what was going on and trying to guess the twists that were coming. We both thought the audio could have been better. It sounded like Julia’s part was muffled in some way and it was something we both noticed. by @_finally_reading_it_

Crossing my fingers I have time to fit all 3 of these in my schedule but I’ve charted a little off course from some of my original October schedule, so who knows?

My Allurial pick is Court of Venus and the shipping is delayed unfortunately.

Anyone start any of these 3 beauties yet? by @_finally_reading_it_

😵‍💫Book Review😵‍💫

A Good Person
by: Kirsten King
3.75 ⭐️

Lilian has felt left out and misunderstood since she was a child. It has carried over into adulthood. No one celebrates her birthday properly, and Henry, the situationship she would prefer to turn into a committed relationship, tries to discard her like she isn’t worth anything.

Lilian’s unending need for revenge strikes hot, and she utilizes a wellness witch’s spell to put a hex on poor Henry. Crazy thing is, Henry actually winds up dead from a stabbing outside a bar. Lilian becomes a person of interest after an unhinged text she sent Henry was found and soon Lilian discovers Henry had a girlfriend the entire time they were involved.

After this - complete and utter derangement ensues as Lilian begins to unravel at the seams.

I have mixed feelings about this one. It started off hilarious! I particularly liked the childhood anecdote about the gorilla pen at the zoo given to clue us in on Lilian’s behavior. As the story continued, the delusional mindset of Lilian felt a little forced to me, though I did really enjoy the flow of consciousness insight into Lilian’s immediate thoughts and feelings.

But then, the story takes a turn and it goes from humorous to dark. And I’m like ohhhhh she isn’t just deluded, she’s actually certifiably insane!!! The humor and darkness bounced back and forth off each other throughout the rest of the book. For some reason my brain grappled to find a balance and common ground between the two. Still, I was thoroughly entertained. by @_finally_reading_it_

🧸Book Review🧸

The Same House
by: Cody Wayne Morris
4.75 ⭐️

Andrew and his son Thomas never live in the same house for more than 1 year. They bounce around California to different rental houses and after 365 days, it’s off to the next one. Andrew will do anything to protect his son like he has had to before.

Soon after moving into the most recent house on Buena Vista Blvd, Andrew and Thomas begin noticing strange things happening in their house - noises, lights turned on when they shouldn’t be, the laptop open when it was shut closed, doors standing wide open after they’ve been locked, just to name a few.

With a huge impending storm about to hit, all of the strange happenings in the new house take a turn for the worse.

Okay, this book was so close to a perfect thriller for me! The spooky vibes associated with haunted houses were giving me anxiety and I said wtf?! out loud quite a few times reading this one. There is also a deeper storyline intertwined in the haunted house plot line that builds the entire book and reveals itself wonderfully after all of the suspense. The author’s chosen ending was honestly perfect to me - and how many times can you say that about a thriller?

The book is a dual POV between Andrew and Thomas and Thomas’s POV was the star of the show. I have a few small complaints about minor character reactions to certain events that held back my last 0.25 of a star, but I was really impressed with this spooky, psychological thriller. This book is also only 265 pages and I read it in two days, what more can you ask for? Pick this one up! by @_finally_reading_it_

🙃I’m so excited about this🙃

Goodreads posted this video on TikTok yesterday hinting they are going to be adding half and quarter stars to their ratings!!

I recently just started using 0.25 stars in my book ratings because sometimes you just need a little more wiggle room when reviewing a book!

What do you think? Will you be utilizing new 0.5 and 0.25 stars if/when they become available?! by @_finally_reading_it_

❓❓Book Review❓❓

What Happened to Nina?
by: Dervla McTiernan
4.5 ⭐️

Nina and Simon are in college and high school sweethearts and have known each other their entire lives. They go on a vacation to Simon’s parents’ second home. Simon returns from the trip. Nina does not.
#whathappenedtonina

Told from the viewpoint of both the mothers and fathers of Nina and Simon, (and the police detective in charge of the case) - What Happened to Nina? is a messy portrait into what both sets of parents are going through immediately after one of their children disappear and one of their children is suspected in causing the disappearance.

Wow - this book is going to haunt me for a while. Reading it made me think of the Gabby Petito case from a few years back. I have so much I want to say and discuss but don’t want to spoil anything. I will say that the book really shows the lengths a parent can take when it relates to their child. The author really does a good job deep diving into the anguish a parent goes through when their kid goes missing, while still keeping the story’s plot moving along.

The audiobook was really good - there are many character perspectives and the narration really added to the story.

The last 30% or so was extra delicious and the ending was very enjoyable and satisfying. I highly suggest this book for anyone who enjoys a slower burn domestic thriller involving a missing person/child. by @_finally_reading_it_
