Using various tree branches and pieces of old wood, folk artist Dionizy creates unique, whimsical sculptures. His favourites are birds, angels and saints. I love his bold colours and characteristic dots 💜

Dionizy’s collection is now available online. Vibrant palette, playful shapes and floral motifs. This is my favourite Dionizy’s collection so far! by @_folka_

In the ancient Greece, as well as in other ancient cultures like Rome and Egypt, votive offerings were presented to a god, sometimes either in the hope of a cure or as thanks for one.
They were made in the shape of the afflicted body part so it could be an ear, foot, heart etc.
Nowadays, this tradition is still alive in some regions in Greece. People would bring this wax offering to the church hoping for a recovery.

As you might know, I am obsessed with this ancient tradition. There is something so beautifully haunting about using wax to represent our fragile human bodies.

During my recent visit to Greece, I noticed small wax infant figurines left at church altars - a deeply moving continuation of this ritual, left by couples praying for a child or a thank you token after a child is safely born.

I am excited that I can keep this beautiful tradition alive. My small collection is now available online 💛

Each piece is handcrafted in an old, traditional workshop in Peloponese in Greece.

Welcome to the incredible world of the folk artist Jan.

Jan lives in a small village near Sandomierz in Poland. He celebrated his 86th birthday back in May.
Jan creates intricate, hand-carved wooden folk toys, both static and moving.

His toys depict traditional farm and rural work, village scenes, nature, and animals. Blacksmith working at an anvil, a woman spinning wool on a spinning wheel, a farmer plowing the field with horses, and pecking roosters and hens - his private museum is filled with so many incredible pieces that their variety is overwhelming.

Asked how he learned this craft, he mentioned helping his father carve basic wooden clogs and household utensils. Throughout his life, he worked for a railway company. Now, being retired, he can focus entirely on his favorite passion.

He loves preserving traditional wooden toys just as he remembers them from his childhood. What is most remarkable is that all his pieces are constructed entirely by hand, without using a single nail, any glue or paint. Instead, he uses linden and aspen wood, allowing natural wood grains, knots, and textures to tell the story.

Jan also loves sculpting historical scenes as well as religious ones. He also writes poetry.

It was such an inspiring visit ❤️ Thank you Jan for your incredible craft!

Small selection of Jan’s work will be available online next month.

I’m excited to present these unique ceramic pieces from Iłża, Poland.

You might not have heard of Iłża pottery before, even though it has a very long tradition dating back to the 14th century. I especially adore its distinctive, hand-sculpted folk figurines.
The most popular ones are the „baba” (woman) dressed in a traditional costume, very often shown holding a chicken and various animals and birds.

Folk artist Radosław still continues this unique tradition in his pottery workshop. I am excited to present a small collection of his figurines: the traditional baba, a hoopoe, horses, cockerels, and peacocks.

They are now available online.

The movie clips and photos are from the 1951 documentary „Ceramika Iłżecka” by Andrzej Wajda.

Located on the second floor of the historic 16th century Arian Tower, the Regional Museum in Wojciechów is an absolute hidden gem.

Stepping into this lovely, intimate space feels like traveling back in time. The museum beautifully recreates a traditional local cottage interior from the 1920s–1930s.
Every piece of furniture, embroidery, traditional tool and everyday household object is completely authentic. They were all gifted by local families over the years.

There are so many quiet, beautiful stories written into these objects, keeping the spirit of the region's ancestors alive.

Also, if you make it all the way to the top, the third floor houses the incredible Museum of Blacksmithing - it deserves a separate post! by @_folka_

My Woven Stories of Podlasie Folk Excursion came to the end. Feels a little bit sad, I miss our adventure. We created so many memorable memories together. I need to create many posts to show you how beautiful and unique Podlasie is! Here’s a geometric pająk adorned with lovely paper stars. Have a look at this papercut curtain and and hand woven blanket.

Wonderful time discovering Podlasie together with Maria, Elisa, Kathleen, Lisa, Molly and Frranses. Memorable moments meeting Witalis and Anna and listening to their stories. Picking sweet plums from Anna’s tree. And meeting two European bisons in the forest! Today, we’ll join Dożynki 🌾 by @_folka_
