Black Power leaders H. Rap Brown & Stokely Carmichael (Kwame Ture) sharing laughs and jokes together (wait until the end) 🫶🏽😊

Yesterday marked what would have been the 83rd birthday of H. Rap Brown, known as Imam Jamil Al-Amin.

We commemorate the life and legacy of Imam Jamil, who died in prison in November of last year after years of medical neglect by the system, including the neglect of a large tumor on his face that ultimately developed into Stage Four cancer.

Imam Jamil was wrongfully imprisoned for over 25 years after being targeted by the state for decades, first as a Black revolutionary during the Civil Rights era, and later as a Muslim leader and advocate for human rights.

We pray that Imam Jamil and his family receive justice, and for the freedom of all political prisoners.

Your first birthday without you here. Almost a year later and I’m still figuring out how to navigate that.

My father. My hero. My teacher. I’m still learning from you, even now.

I miss you more than I can express in words but I’m gonna find my peace, Inshallah. Rest well and know that I still got you. The struggle continues, and the promises I made still stand.

May Allah grant you a spacious grave, peace, and the highest rank in Jannah. Ameen.

Happy birthday, Pop. I love you. 🤲🏽 by @_freeimamjamil

Yusuf was framed. Imprisoned. Forgotten by the system.
But prison didn’t break him. It built him.

How many people do we know right now sitting behind bars for crimes they didn’t commit?

Growing up in Atlanta, I was raised by Imam Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, a man who maintained his innocence until his death in prison. He used to tell me prison was “the University of Yusuf.”

Because like Yusuf, when you’ve lived through injustice in practice, not just in theory, you learn that pain can either destroy you or prepare you.

Don’t let corruption stop you from pursuing power. Change the system from the inside out. by @_freeimamjamil

Why is it easier to just scroll than to speak?

What’s worse than a life sentence is a life sentence silenced.
Don’t let your silence be a part of the sentencing.

Our first Ramadan without Imam Jamil…

While we celebrate Leqaa Kordia’s release, we remember all of our other political prisoners still behind bars this Ramadan:
Dr. Aafia Siddiqui
Shukri Abu Baker & Ghassan Elashi of the Holy Land Foundation
Ya’akub Ira Vijandre
And so many more…

Let us learn from Imam Jamil’s lessons on fasting and continue in our steadfastness to #FreeThemAll before Allah calls them home.

This #BlackHistoryMonth, we remember Imam Jamil Al-Amin, formerly H. Rap Brown, who recently passed away in November 2025 due to medical neglect of a tumor resulting in stage four cancer and being wrongfully imprisoned for 25 years…

H. Rap Brown was the fifth Chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and Minister of Justice for the Black Panther Party during the civil rights movement. His leadership under SNCC and the Black Power movement in organizing against state oppression led him to become a target by the FBI’s COINTELPRO program, aimed to “prevent the rise of a Black Messiah.” His prominence was feared to the point that Congress passed a law nicknamed after him, the “Rap Brown Law,” or the Anti-Riot Act.

After converting to Islam, Brown adopted the name Jamil Al-Amin and became an Imam of a community mosque in the West End of Atlanta, Georgia. Imam Jamil became a protector of his community, leading a neighborhood cleanup of drugs, prostitution, and gang violence. He led over 30 Muslim communities nationwide in the Dar-ul-Islam movement and led national protests against the Bosnian genocide.

This #BlackHistoryMonth, let us honor Imam Jamil and carry on his legacy in our communities ✊🏽
