Perched high above Paleokastritsa, the village of Lakones is one of Corfu’s most picturesque spots. With its 17th and 18th-century Venetian-style houses, narrow stone-paved alleys, and breathtaking views of the Ionian Sea, Lakones feels like stepping back in time. 🏡

Nicknamed the “Balcony of the Ionian,” it offers some of the best panoramic views on the island — the kind that will make you stop in your tracks and just breathe it all in. 🌊

💡 Travel Tip: The road up to Lakones is winding and narrow — not for the faint-hearted if you’re driving! A great alternative is to take the local bus from Corfu Town to Paleokastritsa, then either hike or grab a taxi up to the village. Trust me, the views are worth every step (or hairpin turn).

Would you dare to drive up here or would you rather enjoy the hike?

Today we stepped away from Corfu's beaches and sunsets to visit a place that deserves just as much attention: the Donkey Rescue in Doukades.

From the moment we arrived, it was clear this isn't just a sanctuary, it's a second chance.

Many of the donkeys here have been rescued from neglect, abandonment, or years of hard labour. Today they spend their days in peace, cared for by a small team of dedicated volunteers whose compassion is visible in every corner of the sanctuary.

Walking around, reading the stories of the animals, seeing the names of those who have been adopted, and meeting these gentle souls up close is a reminder that kindness can change lives.

If you're visiting Corfu, I genuinely encourage you to spend an hour here. Your visit helps, but if you're able to, please leave a donation or even consider adopting a donkey from afar. It costs just €90 a year to sponsor one of these beautiful animals, and every contribution helps provide food, veterinary care, shelter, and the love they deserve.

Corfu is full of incredible places, but this is one that truly makes a difference.

Let's help ensure this sanctuary—and the remarkable people who keep it running—can continue giving these animals the safe and peaceful lives they deserve.
