Food can often serves as a threatening force in children’s literature used to push a moral lesson. This article, “Ravenous Fantasies and Revolting Dinners,” by Lorna Piatti-Farnell helps outline some of these categories, especially in Roald Dahl books.

Winnie-the-Pooh holds a long lasting memory for so many of us. Which era did you grow up with or what is your favorite adaptation?

Visiting Orchard House last summer while preparing for my undergraduate honors thesis was a truly magical experience. Now that it’s fall, I enjoy reminiscing on that gorgeous atmosphere (although every season reminds me of Little Women). I’m especially reminded of the iconic Jo and Laurie confession scene on the hill. It’s so emotional and beautiful. However, if you’re someone who I thinks Jo and Laurie should have ended up together, I think you’re missing the point.

I recently read Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll for the first time and enjoyed finally seeing the original source of so many iconic characters. The quotes I pulled all refer to the act of growing up. I found it intriguing how the whole book challenges traditional notions of identity and growing (Alice’s struggle with memory and inconsistently changing physical form). Despite this resistance, the ending presents adulthood as inevitable and childhood reduced to nostalgia (slide 3). It also presents the idea of childhood as something passed down rather than formed by the children themselves. I hope to continue exploring these ideas and responses to the novel in an upcoming seminar paper.

I really enjoyed seeing this local production of Finding Neverland at @gcplayhouse about how J.M. Barrie wrote his play “Peter Pan.” (Though I think the live dog on stage was having the best time of us all).

This origin story presents an interesting narrative for interrogating the relationship between childhood and grief. I’m now motivated to finally read the original novel by J.M. Barrie and am intrigued by how he presents the dichotomy of adult cynicism and childhood joy, while critiquing both extremes.

Sam Clemens, better known as author Mark Twain, lived in this stunning High Victorian Gothic Revival house from 1874 to 1891. In Living History Tour, an actress playing Katy Leary, the lady’s maid, led us through the house while telling stories about her experience working there. The interior of the house was gorgeous and intricately detailed. I was also surprised to discover the advanced innovations incorporated into the house, including a telephone, gas lighting, and seven bathrooms with plumbing and adjustable temperature running water. Even though I was not able to take photos inside the house, the exterior and little museum are also lovely to share. I highly recommend a visit! @themarktwainhouse

It’s always interesting to reconsider how a genre of literature functions and its outcomes. I’m also interested in reading the book featured in the Penguin Random House post, “Why You Should Read Children’s Books, Even Though You Are So Old and Wise” by Katherine Rundell. It’s always exciting and a new experience to return to these books as adults.
