After years of developing and testing my sargassum-based concrete material, it was incredible to finally see this tile installed in the water as part of the BIOCAP seawall system.

Tile 16 was fabricated using a plant-based concrete I developed from locally collected sargassum algae and mineral additives. The concrete mix was engineered not only to reduce environmental impact through material reuse, but also to support marine biodiversity by encouraging biological recruitment and ecological growth.

This project represents years of material research, testing, fabrication, and collaboration of many people. Thank you @rdflabfiu and everyone involved for including my material in this project!

(Shoutout to my project management skills for going up to the city after finding this site and talking the right person to support this project. Because of BIOCAP, seawall cap permits in Miami just got easier. And I can quote the @cityofmiami on that one 😉🌹) taken in Morningside Park by @_hoodarchitect

Yesterday I had the pleasure of working with the @reverse_lab_ scientific dive team. My mission was to collect sediment so I can make material for corals. I must admit being in this hybrid space isn’t easy. These guys dive multiple times a day, everyday! I trained my body to be underwater but it’s always a challenge when I go on these missions. Between strong currents and small vessels my entire physical state is being challenged. But I absolutely love being in the water and I super excited to collab with this lab🌹 by @_hoodarchitect

Seaweed x Concrete panels. Locally collected and repurposed

This research evolves from the sargassum crisis across the Caribbean, reframing invasive marine biomass as a material resource. Through a proprietary formula, waste is transformed into modular architectural and design applications, operating at the intersection of architecture, material science and marine ecology.

For the past two and a half years I’ve been fully funded as a fellow under the National Science Foundation to merge architecture, science and marine biology. To be apart of the last cohort with this opportunity, it’s been an extreme honor. I didn’t even want to get my masters degree and here I am ending the toughest year of my life with one of the highest accolades my profession has to offer. Needless to say….It’s Dr. Watson now

Congratulations to RDF and NSF-CREST research fellow Teri Watson (@_hoodarchitect) for successfully defending her Doctor of Design (DDes) dissertation titled Local Ecology: Utilizing Sargassum in Cementitious Building Components.

This dissertation responds to the increasing accumulation of seaweed along Miami-Dade’s beaches by exploring its potential as an eco-conscious building material. It tests how sargassum ash and custom surface geometries can improve the thermal performance of concrete facades in hot climates.

Teri’s research points toward new possibilities for sustainable construction and demonstrates how creative design thinking can transform a regional environmental challenge into an opportunity for innovation.

This week I had the pleasure of co-hosting a 3-day 3d printed workshop with @acadiaorg @manufacturamx @dinorahmschulte and @ax.scho over robotics, geopolymers and sargassum. This years conference focused on ‘Computing for Resilience: Expanding community knowledge and Impact’. I’m beyond grateful to be in such hybrid spaces🌹
