[Chromacris speciosa] Group gathering of freshly hatched Soldier Grasshopper nymph’s in the Atlantic Forest. They remain in this red and black stage for about 60 days, slowly growing (at least 5 times larger) with a series of molts - and lastly, entirely change their colors. The last two pictures are of Chromacris speciosa individuals (in Portuguese, gafanhoto-soldado) wearing their ‘adult uniforms’. I have seen these two versions separately thru the years, but never knew it was the same species at different phases in their lives. The process of insects shape-shifting their way to adulthood (some species do it several times) is divine sorcery…absolutely crazy stuff. Lost Opportunity: I had one of the absolute best deep jungle wildlife encounters of my life the other day, face to face with a Tayra (aka Irara…or Eira barbara), but like a knucklehead was fumbling around trying to change a bird lens to something wider and succeeded in getting no shot whatsoever. Sometimes when you meet wild animals you kind of have a no fear ‘moment’ with them. It’s possible they have never seen a human before and they are just trying to figure you out. ‘My’ Tayra stood motionless for a few seconds curiously staring at me with a near identical expression to the one in this borrowed tayra photo [captured by wildlife shooter Ignacio Yufera]. The intent of this post is to introduce an incredible, relatively unknown animal very infrequently seen (curiously even though it is most active during daylight hours). The tayra is a member of the weasel family, it has a long bushy tail and visually appears like some kind of large terrestrial otter. Amazing creature, I didn’t get the shot, but feel privileged to have met a tayra in person. #tayra #irara #mataatlântica #jungle #wildlife taken in Serra Do Mar by @_ithaka_

Mecistomela marginata is a large species of leaf beetle, the only member belonging to the genus Mecistomela. It primarily feeds on native and introduced palm trees. I observed this bastard on a small fruit tree freshly coated in an organic ‘anti-beetle’ compound (I guess he didn’t get the memo). Membracis Lunata: Great to see my old friend Membracis Lunata yesterday (a member of the treehopper family). It’s been 15 years since I have last seen this exotic creature. Luckily this individual was polite enough to allow a portrait before flying off into the unknown. 📷 Ithaka - series: @aliens_of_akahtilandia [][][] #mataatlantica #macro #insect #entomologia #ithakadarinpappas taken in Mata Atlântica by @_ithaka_
