This little chipmunk wasn’t very happy we had set up under its tree. The intense standoff lasted about 15 mins with neither of us wanting to give up any ground.

What a night to round out our @tricergear_ 10 day backcountry elk hunt. Stayed warm in the @seekoutside bookcliff tipi below freezing temps the whole time.

Blown away is an understatement.
@robert_herbert has done it again and gone above and beyond with this special Stryker 1 build.
The brief was for a knife that will handle everything a backcountry backpack elk hunt could throw at it.
And this the end result.
Magnacut steel
Skeletonised handle with low profile G10 scales
👌🏼🥰

Paired with the new folding field sharpener from @worksharptools which is available for purchase through Rob as well.

Heavy wildlife lens or lightweight everyday setup. I’ve been after a strap that would do both. And I’ve eventually settled on the PGYTECH camera strap pro.

Super comfortable, low profile and handles the heavier 60-600mm lens just as easy as the smaller 28-200.

It stays planted on my shoulder while it lets the camera slide smoothly into position when needed and doesn’t feel bulky. Simple, practical and comfortable
Love the toggles too👌🏼 everything looks better with some blaze orange 🥵

Laying out the layers to help get organised.
Rather than just stuffing them into the pack. Work from the bottom up building out my Elk kit.
Pants, belt and suspenders + merino base layer + sleep set
Base layer- 1 merino top, 2 ultra light fleece
Mid layer- 1 heavier hooded fleece
Insulation- puffer (not pictured)
Rain jacket
Beanies, face/neck gaiter
Base layer merino gloves 1 for hunting 1 for sleeping

Mix of Firstlite, Kuiu and Tusx

One planet Bushlite -15•c down sleeping bag
Nemo tracer blaze liner

2 headlamps
Ultralight backup option that never leaves top section of backpack in case for late carry out or emergency.
Main headlamp for hike ins and camp duties

Included stuff sack on the headlamp acts as a diffuser to hang in the tent which is super handy and can keep small items organised. by @_james_bath_

Breaking the silence..

2 perspectives of the shot.

It was the last day on the trip and we really wanted to get @luke.dusenbury his first sambar. We had headed back to an area we had been seeing a fair few deer over the past few days and spread out to cover a bit more country. Hours went by without much activity. A few deer spotted way down a gully system but nothing we could pursue. We made a call to head a bit higher when Luke called out “I’ve got a deer, feeding in cover at a bit over 400m” we had to hustle to get into a better location and get set up in case a shot presented itself.
Patiently waiting and watching it mill about in cover, it eventually stepped out. A quick range to verify distance, Luke dialled it in and waited. He had a very narrow shooting lane and timing was everything. Myself and @brady_j_miller were set up beside him and sat in silence, watching the scene unfold through our binoculars.
Thankfully everything fell into place and we heard the click of the safety, followed by “are you ready?”
Luke threaded the needle between some big gumtrees and put on a perfect shot. The deer was recovered around 20 yards from the shot site.
Was an awesome way to round out the trip, and I’m grateful to be able to share these experiences with some solid guys.

Check out the @tricergear_ YouTube channel for a short film of the trip.

A bit of a gear break down series for my upcoming backpack Elk trip.
It’s going to be an unguided 10 day public land backpack hunt, so pack weight and gear space is pretty critical.

Optics:🕵🏻

I’ve chosen to run the Maven S3.A 20-47x67mm spotting scope. I’ll be pairing it with the HP eye piece which will convert it into a 24-52 magnification while still maintaining a bit more of a compact footprint. Which will be great for trying to pick them out in thick timber at distance.

And for binoculars I’m taking the B.2 11x45’s. I wanted something that is still very easy to use handheld, has a larger objective for maximum light transmission, amazing edge to edge clarity and colour fidelity. These have a great eye relief and are really comfortable to spend hours behind.

Some of the best memories are made on the trip in. Reminds you how lucky we are as hunters in Victoria, and how hard we need to fight to keep public land access.
Earlier this year I hosted a couple of legends from the US, and heading over the mountain the talk turned to hunting access, and how different our access systems are. We stopped the cars and I pointed out we could hunt anywhere we could see from that spot and beyond.
Love sharing these experiences with people.

There’s just something special about glassing these big benches. The Victorian high country never fails to deliver the views.
The B1.2 10x42’s are in their element in these changing environments. Bush stalking on the way in, and then long sessions watching over big systems.

Whats your go to magnification for this type of hunting?

Meat on the back, suns long gone, and still a few kms back to camp. This is the part nobody sees. But we wouldn’t want it any other way.
