FLOOR ROOF (2026)
In collaboration with @_jiyoch

This performance-installation circles around the idea of car(ry)ing a house, not as a fixed place, but as something assembled through movements, materials, habits, and the quiet work of holding one another. A practice of ‘homemaking’ and ‘bodystorming’, guided by the question of how we come home to ourselves.

Our work took shape in May during the opening performance of the exhibition ‘Wayward Sanctuaries’, remains on view throughout July and early August, and will be packed up during the closing performance at the finissage on 09/08.

Op de opening van Wayward Sanctuaries brengen enkele kunstenaars hun werk tot leven. @@_jiyoch & @__twie leerden elkaar kennen tijdens het mentorprogramma POC POC 3 en maakten FLOOR ROOF.

De performance-installatie draait rond het zorg dragen voor een huis. Tijdens de opening krijgt het werk vorm en blijven er sporen achter. Op de finissage wordt het huis dan weer ingepakt.

During the opening of Wayward Sanctuaries different artists will show a performance. Jiyoung Chu & Thuy Lê Thi Thu met during the mentoring program of POC POC 3 and made FLOOR ROOF together.

This performance-installation circles around car(ry)ing a house. During the opening the work will gain shape through traces from the performance. At the finissage the artists will then pack in the house again.

I live with a constant sense of departure. A longing for a return to a place/moment/something/someone I can no longer define.

In my childhood, unlike the high-rise apartments trend of the time, my mother preferred even a small detached house. Because of her, our family had our very own roof.
It was around the age when my teeth began to fall out. My mother tricked me, saying it wouldn't be as painful as the dentist. A thread tied around one of them, and with a sudden pull, it was out. I remember crying so loud with a sense of betrayal and pain.
But my mother’s voice was louder than my crying. "Hurry! You have to throw your tooth onto the roof for the magpie to bring you a fresh one! Out we go!" She dragged me outside, still clutching the tooth with its bloody root. Through a blur of tears and a desperate need for a new tooth, I threw it onto our roof with all my might.

A life of drifting, of never quite arriving.
A reality where we do not belong, where we are asked to keep moving.
And yet, there were things that let us dwell for a moment.
We bundled them up, carrying them like precious burdens.
These trivial, everyday things were prizes that could only be won by relentlessly proving our own worth.
Under the excuse of planning an exhibition, we met once a week.
We shared the simplest and warmest meals, and the most familiar conversations.

Jiyoung Chu is a multidisciplinary artist and tailor based in Antwerp. After receiving professional training in tailoring in Milan, Italy, she completed both her BA and MA at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp.

Her work begins by attending to subtle moments of pre-linguistic communication, exploring how bodily senses operate prior to cultural interpretation or social conditioning. Questions surrounding how the body is perceived and continuously adjusted in relation to its environment run throughout her practice.

Her background in tailoring forms a critical foundation for this inquiry. She approaches tailoring not merely as a technical skill, but as a way of thinking—an epistemological framework for reading and interpreting the body and space. Processes of measurement and observation extend beyond functionality, operating instead as a language that generates sensation and relationships.

Based on this approach, she creates objects, interactive installations, and performative works that reveal the often invisible relationships between body and space.

Jiyoung's solo-exhibition "Inhabit Garments" opens this Saturday 2 to 7PM at the gallery, make sure to pass by and see it! 🗓️

For our finissage, @jinziliu.liujinzi is showing her chocolate for both of human and dogs.
