Colour is one of the most powerful tools in retail design – it sets the tone, tells a story, and invites people in. I am definitely a lover of colour and use it in most of my projects.

Looking back at a pop-up shop I designed on Carnaby Street (with @londonmademeofficial and @mayorofldn ) the space needed to feel fun, playful, and a little eclectic.

This shop was curated by several independent brands, so the colour palette needed to celebrate individuality but also work together harmoniously – bringing energy and cohesion.

A reminder that great retail isn’t just about selling – it’s about feeling something the moment you walk in.

Clerkenwell Design Week 2025

So many inspiring moments packed into two creative days. A few highlights from my notebook (and camera roll)

🎨 Beautiful, joyful furniture colour stories from @stringfurniture — clever, compact, and full of personality.

🪑 Always a treat to step inside the @hermanmiller showroom. A masterclass in materiality and comfort with serious design heritage.

🏛️ The installations @old_sessions_house brought drama and detail, with standout moments across each level.

🧱 Tile & brick heaven at @domustiles & @ehsmitharch — so many new surface ideas to dream about.

🏠 @alexchinneck’s house installation was both surreal and structural — bending expectations with that signature playful twist.

🎉 Hosted by the brilliant team at @solusceramics — and wrapped up in style with an unforgettable closing party featuring @gillespeterson

Feeling creatively recharged and full of fresh ideas.

Where do you go for inspiration?

I was recently working with the @aubfutures team and doing 1:1s with students. A question that came up again and again was: Where do you find inspiration?

It’s interesting where people pull ideas from. Pinterest is fun but it can feel saturated. It’s hard to find a truly unique perspective there.

One place I always turn to - vintage interior books and magazines 📚

I’ve collected loads over the years, and they’re my go-to when I’m starting a new project or looking to inject something unexpected. There’s a buzz I get from seeing how things were designed in the past and how those ideas still echo through spaces today.

Here’s my most recent find:

The Interiors Book of Shops & Restaurants. By the editors of Interiors magazine, published in 1981, New York.

It opens with:

“Enticing a customer to enter and then buy is the primary function of the design of commercial spaces.”

This quote in the introduction really hit home:

“Most interesting of the trends “shopping as theatre” this approach focuses squarely on making the consumer the centre of the action, the key participant in the exciting experience of shopping. It turns the simple act of choosing and paying for a simple item into a flight of fantasy. The elements of drama and surprise are crucial; the shopper wants to be amused and excited —and never, every bored.”

Even now, nearly 45 years later this feels relevant.
We’ve seen a big shift in the last decade towards experiential, community-focused spaces. Retail design is more than just “product on shelves” it’s about PR, storytelling, brand-building, and creating authentic connections.

I like to think of myself as a spatial brand storyteller.
And yes—I’m absolutely here for a flight of fantasy ✨

COLOURS & PATTERNS of Portugal 🔸▫️🔹🔺Earlier in the year I went on a road trip in Portugal capturing some of the vast patterns and colour combos - it’s really such an inspiring place.

I have neglected my Instagram grid for a while - I just really like stories 😂 so I’ll add a few bits now as it’s nice to document stuff here. taken in Portugal by @_joarmitage_

POP UP SHOP DESIGN. One of the main approaches I have to any pop up shop or space is to check on how sustainable it is. Waste from temporary projects can be huge, so is a factor in how I produce any displays or furniture.
.
.
The creatives set out their intentions for the shop and project and one high up in the list was zero waste.
.
.
To avoid any material waste, I created a series of cnc cut units, all made from birch plywood. Every piece cut was saved, and used elsewhere in the shop displays.
.
.
We had a pile of plywood to pull from for hanging panels to shelving to display products on.
.
.
The creatives customised their own units and spaces to reflect their brand and vision.
