Traditional weightlifting, Pilates, and Yoga have done more harm than good—because they ignore how the human body actually works.

These methods poorly isolate the body, forcing it into positions and patterns that ignore our paleobiomechanical roots. Shoutout to HBS2 practitioner @_joe__greco_ for sharing his experience of improving his joint pain and movement at 64 years old.

People are no longer able to ignore what actually works, it’s time for change.

Sami started her @projectfunction.santamonica journey in May 2025 Her body was imbalanced and in pain. Scoliosis, lack of core, glute and lat strength. One of our first clients to experience the new tech @projectfunction.santamonica Client Testimonial – Project Function Santa Monica
I’ve worked with many physical therapists over the years to address chronic back pain from scoliosis, along with persistent knee, hip, and right shoulder pain. Nothing ever made a lasting difference until I started training at Project Function Santa Monica with Joe Greco.
Since beginning sessions with Joe, I’ve seen changes in my body faster than I ever thought possible. I never believed I’d be able to run again—now I’m doing sprints on the treadmill. Joe has helped me improve my movement mechanics, mobility, posture, and build real, functional strength.
Pain Reduction Results:
Before Project Function Santa Monica:
• Knee pain: 4/10
• Hip pain: 4/10
• Back pain: 5–6/10
• Right shoulder pain: 4/10
After Project Function Santa Monica:
• Knee pain: 1/10
• Hip pain: 1/10
• Back pain: 1/10
• Right shoulder pain: 1/10

Kristy started FP when she was 31 and had zero exercise background. No gym. No sports. No previous training. On her first consult she was in so much pain that she couldn’t even jog on a treadmill.

Severe hip and rib shift, no core tension, kyphosis, neck and lower back pain, no ability to access her posterior chain. Just holding herself up with her joints.

When people with no exercise background finally decide they want to get healthy, they often get pushed right into the no-pain-no-gain, grind-until-failure type of workouts. The problem is, if your structure is already stressed and compensating, that type of training just makes the situation worse.

Working out should start with addressing your pain and improving your posture and movement first.
Then it should make you more athletic by training the human patterns we all rely on: standing, walking, running, and throwing. Not just simple picking up and putting down weights. The weight needs to be moved in ways that matter to the patterns of daily life.

When Kristy trained her structure around those patterns, here’s what changed:

Lower back pain: ❌ 7/10 → ✅ 1/10
Shoulder pain: ❌ 7/10 → ✅ 1/10
Neck pain: ❌ 7/10 → ✅ 1/10
Knee pain: ❌ 7/10 → ✅ 1/10
Hip pain: ❌ 7/10 → ✅ 1/10

She used to come home from work feeling wrecked and assumed that was normal. Now she stands stronger, moves with more confidence, and has awareness that follows her through the day.

Train the system, not the symptom.

Great work @_joe__greco_ @fp.santamonica and Kristy!

Women should be lifting weight. Absolutely.

But how you load the body matters.

Adding resistance isn’t automatically beneficial just because it builds muscle or increases strength. If the body isn’t managing force efficiently, adding more load can reinforce the same compensations and movement dysfunctions already present.

The goal should be bigger than simply getting stronger.

Build strength that transfers to human movement.

At Functional Patterns, we look at the body as an interconnected system. We train around the First Four — standing, walking, running and throwing — while addressing how the ribcage, pelvis, spine and extremities coordinate to manage force.

That means developing strength while improving the relationships that influence posture, gait, rotation and overall movement capacity.

For me as a practitioner, this is the difference: we’re not simply loading muscles — we’re trying to improve the system those muscles operate within.

Address the system, not just the symptoms.

Build a body that doesn’t just lift more, but moves better and keeps working for the long haul.

That’s the standard.

Shout out to the practitioners putting in the work and producing these results:

76 YEARS OLD | 18 MONTHS OF CONSISTENT WORK APPROVED RESULT

When Kathy started @projectfunction.santamonica she reported:

🔴 Neck pain: 10/10
🔴 Left hip pain: 8/10

She also had scoliosis, osteopenia, spinal osteoarthritis and diagnosed bone-on-bone arthritis of the left hip.

After approximately 3 years of PT, chiropractic, acupuncture, massage and pain medication, she said her pain continued to worsen.

We began working 2x/week, focusing not simply on where she hurt, but on how her entire system functioned—pelvis, ribcage, spine and lower extremities—using @functionalpatterns based movement retraining, myofascial techniques and consistent homework.

Over 18 months, her reported neck pain went:

🔴 10/10 → 🟢 0/10

Knowing her left hip would eventually require replacement, we also used that time to improve her biomechanics, strength and movement capacity before surgery.

Kathy underwent a total left hip replacement in January 2026.

She credits that preparation with helping her recovery. After being cleared by her orthopedist at 8 weeks, she returned to @projectfunction.santamonica

TODAY

🟢 Neck pain: 0/10
🟢 Left hip pain: 0/10

The surgery replaced the damaged joint.

Our work focused on improving the system moving around it—before and after surgery.

18 months.
2x/week.
Homework.
Consistency.

At 76 years old, Kathy continues to prove what commitment to the process can look like.

“You have to be willing to do the work and make the necessary changes.”

When Darell walked into @fp.santamonica in March 2024, he was facing what seemed like insurmountable challenges. After multiple back surgeries, he was still battling chronic pain and falling frequently due to his deteriorated gait.

THE REALITY:
❌L4-L5 fusion + 9 months in a back brace = stuck in posterior pelvic tilt
❌Cervical disc replacement = upper back, neck & shoulder complications
❌Recent diagnoses: Mild MS, Lyme disease, and mold illness
❌Zero core connection, no pelvic mobility, severe inflammation
❌Cognitive fog so thick that “the lights were on but no one was home”

THE BREAKTHROUGH:
He immediately implemented our FP training and nutrition protocol to tackle his dysfunctions and inflammation at its root. Within months, everything began to shift...

THE TRANSFORMATION:
🔥 Complete elimination of pain levels
🔥 Restored ability to anteriorly tilt his pelvis
🔥 Massive postural improvements
🔥 Dramatically improved balance (no more falls!)
🔥 Strong core connection established
🔥 Crystal clear cognitive function
🔥 Can now process 4-5 corrections simultaneously without breakdown

This is what happens when you address the WHOLE person, not just symptoms, but the underlying inflammation and movement patterns that create lasting change.

Your body has an incredible capacity to heal when given the right tools. 💪 Great work here by @_joe__greco_ and Darrell

Anthony came to @_joe__greco_ @fp.santamonica unable to run due to severe hip, back, and knee pain. After committing to just 1 Functional Patterns session weekly, he went from 9/10 pain to ZERO PAIN! 👏

BEFORE ❌
* Unable to run
* Left scapula winging
* Left side neck and shoulder pain
* Right side knee, hip and foot pain
* Pain level: 9/10

AFTER ✅
* Running pain-free
* Balanced posture
* No neck or shoulder pain
* No knee, hip or foot pain
* Pain level: 0/10

As you can see in this video, Anthony is now more balanced and able to move freely without pain. Just one FP session per week created this incredible transformation!

ANTHONY’S TESTIMONIAL:
“I’ve explored every form of exercise imaginable—yoga, martial arts, long-distance running, weight lifting, plyometrics, parkour, and more. Each one brought its own set of aches and pains—knee, hip, shoulder, or back discomfort. I believed my body was simply unable to cope, a consequence of the wear and tear from my younger years. I assumed I would always be stuck in a cycle of trying to stay fit while managing pain.

Then I discovered Functional Patterns Santa Monica and Joe Greco. For the first time in years, I can work out without dreading the aftermath. Hikes no longer leave me with 2-3 days of knee pain, and planks and presses don’t result in lingering shoulder issues. I can sprint, exercise, and move freely! What used to be followed by discomfort is now leaving me feeling stronger and healthier.”

Terina started her FP journey on April 24th 2024 with @_joe__greco_ @fp.santamonica She was told by a podiatrist she needed foot surgery to get out of pain. She sought out FP after trying PT, chiropractic care, foot training modalities and massage therapy. She religiously comes in twice a week. Her anterior hip shift and anterior tilt shut off her posterior chain and TVA. The compression (lordosis) in her lower back caused her back, neck and foot pain.

After just a few sessions she learned how to stand properly. With decompression protocols and corrective exercise. These are the results. Her pain level went from an 8-10 down to 2 to 0.

Terina testimony:
“Just a few months ago I was in excruciating chronic pain. It was mostly in my feet and lower back and also had migraines and full body fascia pain. It was so bad that I could not stand on the hard ground of my shower for more than 10 min because the pain became unbearable.

I had bunions, collapsed arches and over pronation. I tried everything, massage, buying expensive overly cushioned arch support footwear and seeing a podiatrist who insisted I needed bunion surgery. Thankfully I did not trust this and wanted to take a holistic approach. I went down a rabbit hole on natural movement and started doing feet strength training and wearing barefoot shoes. This helped my feet a little but my back seemed to get worse.

That’s when I discovered functional patterns and began working with Joe Greco. In our first session he immediately recognized the problem was in my pelvis not my feet, explaining that I had an anterior tilt which caused not only the back pain but also the feet pain. After just the first few sessions my pain reduced drastically. Eventually my body got stronger and I was able to hold myself in the correct posture with little effort.

 My pain went from chronic 8/9 out of 10 to 2 or no pain. Functional Patterns has been life changing for me and I would recommend it to anyone especially those in pain or working office jobs.”

Correcting something like scapular dyskinesis has become almost standard practice with FP Doers. And we’re not just correcting it in a static standing posture—we’re correcting it as the shoulder moves dynamically through space. That’s something you don’t see anywhere else.

Just about everyone who comes into the FP ecosystem finds their way from living with high levels of daily pain to experiencing little or no pain at all. If you think about it, that’s the opposite of what most people expect as they get older. The norm is dysfunction compounding over time—hip pain leading to back pain, back pain leading to knee pain—until life becomes a cycle of limitations.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

The guy in this post came in dealing with severe hip, back, and knee pain. He was living at a 9 out of 10, every single day. Running wasn’t an option. Even basic movements were limited. Now? Zero pain. He’s moving again, without the dysfunction holding him back.

What’s most impressive is how quickly these results can happen. Committing to an hour or so a week. In just a few sessions, we’re seeing people begin to get out of chronic pain and correct physical dysfunctions they thought they’d have to live with for life.

This is the evidence of what happens when you prioritize human biomechanics and apply FP with precision.

We’re not just reducing pain. We’re restoring function. We’re giving people back their lives. Great job here by @_joe__greco_ @fp.santamonica 👊🔥
