🦄 unlocked. Marathon number 10.

Achieving a BQ was a huge deal for me in 2019. With the pandemic it took another 3 years to make it to Massachusetts in 2023.
A virtual Boston (a week after TSP DIY) in 2020. A reduced field where I didn’t make the qualification cutoff, 4month recovery from injury, then a 2nd BQ in 2021.

Before the NYC marathon last year, @daddydarkrdc and I spoke about diversity and body representation, how running in the USA can be a different experience to the UK.
Deffo down to the qualification times / start waves, but felt so proud to be surrounded by other female runners repping strength in all shapes, sizes, ages, ethnicities.

Torrential rain and the iconic hills tried to hold us back. But in the words of Kipchoge “there is always tomorrow to set a new challenge”.

The Speed Project, a bucket list moment. Incoming.. @lisa_morman ‘s race report.
 .
Captured by @duncannicholls
.
Part one: The day, the beginning, the hype, the VIEWS!! The part of the race that all went to plan, infact, ahead of plan.
.
Runners were split into 2 groups.
Team road rage and the power line girls AKA team tears (safe to say there were many tears!)
.
Road rage began and reports were coming through they were flying, they were loving it!
.
We, team tears tagged in and set out on our first section. We were smashing it. It felt quick, but easy(ish). It was so much fun and the views? STUNNING. The feeling when i got back in the car after my 5k was just amazing! Felt so proud, but so tired, and hot!
.
My 3rd 5k, after being pulled into the car over confusion of me needing water @kateoliviamartin tagged in to cover my 5k.. Nooo, i wanted to do it! After some tears (shock) and me asking “was I shit?!” and “promise I’ll run faster”. Captain @desearle1 telling me, “DO NOT run faster”. I was back on the road, running my final leg to the RV.
.
RV was a welcome rest with Cam and @mcalister10 guiding us, 5 mins of chaos ensued.. with a smashed wing mirror and things being thrown around all over, we were on the road.

LA>LV race report according to Flo.

“Go with the flow” has become somewhat of a life mantra for me. @mo_gawdat speaks of allowing yourself to ‘go where life takes you’. Most of the events that make us who we are are unplanned. Sometimes, life knows better.

It’s what led me to this epic team and opportunity - and became my mantra in the race. Here’s how the ~500km went for me.

Part 1… A fast and fun blur.

The 4am start flashbulb frenzy. Rolling through Beverly Hills at dawn. Have I missed the turning? Tailwinds. Crosswinds. Mega-trucks. Am I dreaming or is that a techno DJ in the desert? I feel grateful to run sunrise and sunset that day. Could I do this forever?

Part 2… Nightfall brings new challenges.

An accident on the freeway leaves most cars (including ours) helplessly stuck in traffic behind their runner. No one knows how long for and @emb_lifeontherun puts in a heroic and unplanned 18km leg. @lisa_morman cuts her rest short and does the same.

Once free from the traffic jam, we struggle to find a completely solo and panicked Lisa on the trail. Why are things so much scarier at night? Luckily, problem solving captain @desearle1 keeps her on the phone until we’re reunited.

A 4am trio switchero means I pick up Lisa’s segments. They’re not segments I’ve learnt but this was ‘go with the flow’ in full … flow.

Whilst @karan_nayee navigates our Mazda CX around fallen pylons and terrain likely not covered by insurance, @ces_menato and I decide it’s quicker to ditch the bike and run the next 11k together.

@kateoliviamartin calls to make sure we know the next handover “find and follow the barbed wire until there’s an opening, then climb up onto the slipway and over the freeway!” I honestly think she’s joking.

Because there really would have been no #TSP, no third place, no lifelong memories without the crew, it’s time for another one of their race reports: @mariamcalister

It’s really hard to put the TSP experience into words and although there’s a lot of words that follow, I’m still not convinced it does our 38 hours and 56 mins in the desert justice but here goes…

After a busy 48 hours in LA picking up and swapping cars, collecting and parking the RV, it was 2.30am and my alarm was telling me it was time. I went with the group taking @florencepap to the start line so we could get Gerti (the RV) from its overnight spot. As we neared Santa Monica Pier nervous excitement was everywhere. This was it, the planning done, we just had to do the thing - crew @_just_running to the finish line.

With Gerti loaded up, we were on the road. This was my first crew rest period but I passed on the opportunity to sleep, too distracted and excited by everything going on around me.

Soon I was in the car, driving #teamtears as they took on their first segments. Emotions were high but watching @kateoliviamartin @ces_menato and @lisa_morman settle into a rhythm and enjoy the views along the way was a joy - they were crushing it!

My next stint in the car brought our first real challenges with dogs, quad bikes and fast moving traffic. Next up was RV navigation and well-being via Barstow…a quick stop and some friendly fellow RV drivers later, we’d completed the dreaded RV toilet dump.

I was back driving the car as night was falling - we knew this was the business end and little did I know, I would be in this role for the next 8 hours. A closed road meant some sketchy off-road past a creepy farm and a no-room-for-error water crossing but this was nothing compared to the test of the traffic jam that was to come. I’m not sure how long we were stopped on the freeway, the logistics of the hold up for the runners and arranging a handover for @emb_lifeontherun distracting us from the never ending tailback.

When we completed TSP DIY in 2020, we thought we were ready for the real deal.
Lol, nah.

I had legit nightmares about being underprepared or pushing ourselves too far if we tried to break the women’s record via the full OG route. Turns out the one thing this “British bitch” didn’t consider was feeling the cold!

The whole experience, and the upholding of community was incredible. Huge thanks to our 6 support crew members (who had also paid their way to fly out and join us) every one of you is a legit secret weapon. We couldn’t have done it without you.

This was my 38:56.

4:00am - TSP start at Santa Monica Pier. Pure vibes. @duncannicholls , @karan_nayee and I cheered off @florencepap before legging it to get the car started and ahead of the other team vehicles parked up.

4:40am - my 1st 5k leg for sub team Road Rage. Hilly AF - exactly as Captain and route master @desearle1 had briefed. Felt weak and tired ngl.

5:46am - 2nd 5k leg took me past train tracks and shady trucker loading bays - cue wolf whistles. Car was far ahead and I wished I’d asked for the gang to keep closer.
Mantra: more “run away” than TSP’s “run amok”.

6:53am - my 3rd 5k leg closed out our section for Road Rage. Also hilly AF.
Started out in cute suburbia (wish I’d taken a pic of the pigeon transport van), finished with sand hitting teeth as mega trucks billowed past to get onto the Golden State Freeway above our handover point. Tapped @kateoliviamartin in.
Highly rated: pedestrian crossings in the middle of nowhere that immediately changed the lights for you 😘👌

7:40am ish - 1st pit stop for bagels, iced tea, wild wees, recovery in the Normatec compression boots, sunbathing on the roof of the RV. A few other RVs pull up, with none other than @cursorwan

12:16pm - a couple of rotations later and felt amped up for my 5th 5k leg, holding strong as other teams who took the OG route started to catch up.

3:27pm - photo timestamp at Adelanto Beach Club. Fucking surreal, and wonderful to meet the TSP team in the downtime between their hourly livestream.
Wrote a legit letter home to husband and dog, which actually arrived back in the UK.

Time for another #TSP race report. This time from @kateoliviamartin

Ok buckle in - for anyone interested, I’ve written my version of a race report from @thespeedproject (and then maybe I’ll be done talking about it…) 🖤

______
I think the theme of the whole of The Speed Project, for me at least, is that no amount of preparation could have *truly* prepared me for what we experienced - both the amazing and the challenging aspects of it.

The entire training build up, the cross-continental planning calls, the 3 days of final prep in LA before the race began, waking up at 3am to pack the RV and drive to our first changeover point - yet none of it felt real until I was standing on the side of a highway at 7.15am about to run my first segment, and suddenly the enormity of what we were about to undertake hit me. I had a cry (the underlying/ constant theme of the experience for Ces, Lisa and I, immediately self named ‘team tears’) and then Xan appeared in the distance running towards me, tagged my hand, and my race began.

Similar to most of the team, the first 3x 5km segments flew by quickly as we ran along the Soledad Canyon/ Santa Clara river. Despite being hilly (the other theme of the experience for team tears), the road surface was good, the scenery was beautiful, and physically I felt great. The first RV recovery period also went by alarmingly quickly, and soon I was setting off in the heat of the day on leg 2 for the next 3x 5km segments. These were characterised by dead straight roads (not my ideal 5km route), a tail wind (lovely), cross winds (horrible), and dust (face bandana required). Although I was still running fast, I ended this leg with a sore left calf which made the next recovery period stressful - when you’ve only got max. 3 hours to change clothes, re-hydrate, (try and) eat, use the compression boots/ have a massage (from our hero Estelle), and maybe nap, the time goes really fast, and I was worried that a sore calf only 30km in could become problematic later on.

Race Report: David

As crew captain for TSP, I was asked to be the decision maker. The runners would be tired and would need one clear voice to make decisions. I accepted the task, but having never done anything like this before, I wanted to give it my best shot.

My race started months before that 4am Friday morning in Santa Monica.

Firstly, crew, we would need a great team to help our runners achieve what they wanted. We ended up with a better crew than I could have imagined. All MVPs in their field and brought so much joy.

Next, the route. Lots of in depth research into the route was conducted by @xandriazf , but as we are London based we couldn’t actually recce it. I had to make some calls on what we could safely support to get us a route which could be record breaking.

Route confirmed - next up segments. I painstakingly broke down each part of the route in 5k/3k strava segments so the runners could put them on their watches for navigation purposes. This took TIME but meant I knew this route inside out.

Divide the runners - allocate segments, changeovers, sort RV swap overs and crew. This task was huge and I needed everyone’s buy-worth it. Next up the race itself.
