As we passed Hackney Town Hall during the Big Film Photo Walk organised by @analoguewonderland on June 26th, I saw this happy couple celebrating their wedding day with their families. I explained that groups of photographers all over the country were out with their film cameras on the same day and asked if I could take a photo. I wish I could send this shot to them but in the excitement of the moment, we didn’t swap details!

Taking part in the @analoguewonderland Big Film Photowalk was loads of fun. I joined a group of lovely fellow film lovers (first, strangers; then, friends) for a mellow meander from Hackney to Shoreditch on a hot summer’s day. Together we found shots of bagel biting, birthday hats, squirrels nibbling, sandals strolling, intriguing signage, backlit foliage, and a pair of friends enjoying a Sunday picnic who were curious to know why a group of people with cameras were wandering slowly and intentionally across London Fields.

Meet Kaia 📸 Photographer & filmmaker @_kaia.rose_ is one of Havelock Walk’s newer arrivals - swipe and read below to find out some fun facts about her 👇

☕️ Morning mug and hot drink of choice: this lovely little ceramic cup by @hannah.jean.studio that I picked up at @betterthingslondon with a demitasse of black coffee. I enjoy the ritual of hand-grinding my beans each morning and the easy slowness of a pour over.

✏️ Go-to writing implement: black Muji 0.38 gel ink ball point pen - so easy to refill when the ink runs dry.

⚙️ Oft-used tool or medium: if you come to my open studio, you’ll see images taken on all of these cameras (the little Rollei 35 was my mom’s when she was in her twenties). I love the surprises that come with using expired film - a lot of these rolls were found in storage, leftover from my childhood.

🎨Colours currently being enjoyed: this trio of colours are inspired by California wildflowers that spring up together near where I grew up.

🗓️ Years on #HavelockWalk: two and a half years

Come say hi at Open Studios on May 9/10 and May 16/17 in Forest Hill SE23. The #HavelockWalk artists will be opening up their studios between 11am-6pm and there will be music, food, a kid’s art trail, and fun vibes.

It’s been almost a year since I went to the Orkney Islands in search of puffins. I was hoping I would get to see one or two - not in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would get to spend an entire afternoon with (no exaggeration) hundreds and hundreds of puffins on the isle of Westray.

Was the Scottish wind blowing? Yes. Were my fingers freezing? Also yes. But as a photographer who loves birds, I was one very happy Kaia.

Got my #35mmfilm developed from the Serengeti! I didn’t shoot nearly as much with my #canoneos1 as my digital camera but I’m glad I remembered to bring it out in special cases, particularly in our up-close encounters with this gorgeous lioness and her cubs.

These epic Tanzanian landscapes look lovely with a bit of Kodak Portra 400 grain.
