I finally started to process a bag of film that’s been sitting in the back of my fridge for over a year. I’ve found that the distance between capturing and seeing a photograph creates a different kind of relationship to it. And truly one of the great joys of scanning is finding photographs you forgot you had even taken.

“Each of us leaves evidence on the earth that in various ways bears our form, but when I gently press my hand into the rabbits downy, rounded Meuse it makes me wonder: will all the marks I have left on this world someday be tied up in a box?”

I read this passage from Sally Mann’s memoir the night before he died. And it makes me think of the evidence of him I’ve collected over the years—books, letters, typewriters, radio broadcast recordings. I’ve always felt that there was something weighty about these objects, as if they held a soul. To me, a part of him lived in them. Having them around made me feel closer to him—they gave me the feeling that one day I might be able to be as remarkable as him.

But the marks he left on the world are far greater than these physical materials he left behind. Those things are simply vessels that hold our memories of him. The most significant evidence of him is found in the marks he left on people.

Two weeks before his 96th birthday, my grandfather Ken Wotherspoon passed away peacefully in his sleep. He was a truly exceptional man and I’m blessed to bear some of his form. by @_kennymcdonald

Every month of Miles’ first year has felt like a journey in itself, with its own set of challenges, joys, and lessons learned. When I look back at photos of him from six months ago it feels like I’m looking at a completely different kid.

As I reflect on this time, I realize how quick it all goes. It makes me want to remember not to rush the moments—not even the hard ones, especially not the hard ones—because soon those moments will be gone and we’ll be on to the next ones. 🐕 by @_kennymcdonald
