Heaven, USA was released one year ago tomorrow. Talking with people, Asian and otherwise and hearing other adoptee’s stories has meant everything to me. I hoped that this album at its best could be a bridge somehow. And I think maybe it has in some ways. Hardcore is a crazy thing. You really get what you put into it. As I approach being 38 I’m even more set in believing that creating music and art is significant. Vulnerability and sincerity in the age of prompt this, copy that, is everything. Heaven, USA isn’t perfect. It wasn’t made by those chasing perfection. We were just trying to tell a story the only way we knew how. I’ve never put so much time into anything else I’ve ever made. If nothing else making this album changed me for the better. I guess I couldn’t ask for anything more than that. The pain in the process. The uncomfortability in the creating means you are a human being. I’d take 1000 bands of kids playing hardcore poorly than 1 soulless entity making something that’s neatly packaged, bright,shiny, and hollow. Let me see your edges so I know it cost you something in the creative exchange. So I can see that there’s something worth building with you. I hope that Heaven, USA helped someone like me. Even if it’s just seeing their own reflection in music for the first time. I hope other Asians pick up the instruments and start bands. Take it farther. Thanks for listening. by @_kyeongmo

I don’t know how to talk about No Model. I’ve been in post-tour mode jumping head first back into life. But today I realized that a year ago today we were on a plane to Seoul to meet up with NM to play Baby Doll. They’re memories I’ll treasure till the day I die. Who would have thought 10 years ago that a bunch of Asians and adoptees could do this? I didn’t. NM gave me strength and amplified my own voice when I really needed it. It’s a different type of confidence that happens when you know another band is on the same mission as you. It helped me write Heaven, USA and helped guide my principles. I owe NM a lot. SOUR owes NM a lot. More than I can really convey in a text box. Below is what I wrote for the last show zine.   “I just want to go on record and say that I hate doing this.  Goodbyes are bullshit but No Model is family and the most important band I know so I’m writing this.  Know that we are lucky to be alive at the same time as this band.  While the world around us deteriorates and Hardcore these days many times is more of an endless scroll distraction than a catalyst for change, No Model was the opposite.  Thank you No Model for existing.  You were a singular vision in a fractured time of tourists and grifters jumping at anything that gives them a moment of attention.  You changed my life and one day you’re going to change the lives of kids that haven’t heard you yet.  Be it tomorrow, 10 years from now, or 50 years in the future.  No Model is eternal.  These Ch_nks can’t be killed because the truth lives on forever.” With all the love in my heart. Sign of life. SOUR is going on tour in September. Sending off No Model with one last show. I’ll wait till after to make a post about all my thoughts but I’m heartbroken to say the least. Hope to see you all soon. PS: September 21st date of tour is now in Toledo, OH. by @_kyeongmo

AAU year 2. This year it felt like a fest “fest”. Not enough time to see and talk with everyone. More friends there than I could count. Not enough photos taken. A great problem to have. Having adoptees there from all over the country as well was incredible. I’m privileged to know each and every one of you. SOUR getting to play is just a huge bonus. I would have been in New York in May regardless of performing or not. @summon.m3 ferment, cherub chains, and the no model team have built something special. Thanks for giving us a space. Thank you for giving not only Asian Americans but also adoptees a platform. SOUR is just a band of fools from Ohio that usually play a laundromat in Columbus. We’re privileged to play in one of the Meccas of hardcore twice now. See you all next year. @asianamericanunityfest forever. PS: @xoheejin took a lot of these photos. I ran out of tags. by @_kyeongmo

Happy 35th birthday Hannah. You’re deserving of all good things. Every year I see how you grow more sure of who you are but still keep the thoughtfulness and kindness at the core of you. Finally sat down after our Asia tour with No Model to make a post. After a soul crushing start with two canceled flights, an overnight stay in Dallas, and hours the next day sitting on the tarmac due to more mechanical issues we made it to Seoul. Not many adoptees get to have a homecoming to their birth country on their own terms and I have to acknowledge how special this was. All thanks to hardcore. These were the most special shows I’ve ever gotten to play and we got to do it with our best friends. Thank you @aliceinchang, @akioandtheriver, and @info_blackhole for making this happen. Thank you @xjasonx_93 for the hospitality and love. Seoul hardcore forever. Tokyo hardcore forever. Listen to @spearhardcore and @noshelter_seoulhc. Thank you all our new and old friends. Thank you for changing the lives of some adoptees and folks from the USA. We’ll remember these times forever. Heaven, USA has been an idea for about two years now. I’ve always been obsessed with the juxtaposition of things. Or as Virgil Abloh would like to explain, the context of an object/person is decided by the space that it occupies. Korean adoptees have always been dictated by the places that they reside. I became fixated on the idea of a Korean Hanbok in a corn field. Angels in the living room. Highlighting and amplifying the strangeness and anxiety of me growing up in Farmington, IL that I felt as a kid and that I feel even more acutely now every time I go “home”. This album is my story. I’m thankful that the band trusted and allowed me to take this album in the direction we did. And I’m grateful for the daily facetime calls @dudesxrock and I had for over a year talking about what story we wanted these songs to tell. Thank you @shaykaystone for allowing your son, Gabe, to be the focal point of an album made by strangers that @rayeatscrayons endorsed. Thank you @burdetty and @sara.burdette for opening your home for us to use and being the perfect models. Thank you @jaythecreativeguy and @_ayukarts for being so willing to help however we’ve needed it. Thank you @inthestraw_art for making the Heaven, USA sign and understanding exactly what I was going for. And thank you to my wife @hspiker for everything. There wasn’t another photographer that would have been able to convey exactly what I wanted. I think the photos speak for themselves. Thank you for keeping me sane, handmaking the angel wings, and encouraging me into believing making this album was a good thing. Thank you @giveupthegook and @kimhwanchang.
