The Body as the First Interface.

I shared partial RCA keynote slides and a brief overview of this research-through-design trajectory on LinkedIn and Substack.

📌 Revision note: The central label has been updated from “Self” to “Consciousness” in the slides. The previous label was an oversight in the diagram. This framework views the sense of self as emerging through embodied, cognitive, emotional, behavioral, social, and environmental processes rather than existing as a fixed core.

This work explores how immersive environments shape perception, emotion, behavior, and agency through embodied and spatial cognition, extended mind, and environmental interaction.

More reflections, writings, and visual frameworks are coming gradually.

How do we design Physical AI that people would actually want to live with?

Join us for an online Salon Talk with Katie Lim, @katielim.id, Senior Industrial Designer at @frog_design, exploring the human-centered design process behind Nome—frog’s domestic robotics concept.

@interplayer.space

Physical AI is moving intelligence off the screen and into the spaces we inhabit. But capability alone does not determine whether an intelligent machine will feel understandable, trustworthy, or welcome in our everyday lives.

Katie will share how form, posture, movement, sound, and everyday rituals shaped Nome’s development, transforming technical capability into a legible and considerate physical presence.

CONVERSATION THEMES

Nome’s Human-Centered Design Process
Context-first robotics
Motion and sound as communication
Trust and domestic belonging
Collaborative robot ecosystems

📍
September 1 · 5 PM PT / 8 PM ET
Online · RSVP via Luma
[LINK IN BIO]

📍Live attendance is limited to 30 participants to support a focused and engaged conversation. Please RSVP only if you plan to attend live. If your plans change, please release your spot so someone on the waitlist can join.

Hosted and moderated by Binna Lee
@womenindesignnyc

Nome was developed at frog by Katie Lim, Inna Lobel, and Tom Frejowski.

Join us next Tuesday!
We are very excited about our upcoming panel: "The Threshold of Other Spaces", opening a conversation between womxn designers who have shaped the physical and digital spaces we all move through.

Today, we are spotlighting our panelist @_leebinna, who brings her expertise in XR design research to this conversation.

Binna Lee is an embodiment architect, designer, and educator. Building on the legacy of human factors in industrial design, Binna expands human-centered design into environmental and experiential dimensions through her ongoing research frameworks: The Body as the First Interface and Environments as Conditions.

Currently focused on international thought leadership, Binna recently delivered a peer-reviewed Keynote at the RCA Immersive Acts Symposium in London and pitched her pioneering XR project, Insight Realm, at Immersive Tech Week 2026 in Rotterdam. As Vice Chair of WID NYC, she masterfully transforms biological limits and cognitive biases into designable, navigable spatial dynamics.

The spaces we design are never neutral. A stage, a building, and virtual rooms all carry the assumptions, values, and imagination of their designers. Which raises a question worth sitting with: Whose imagination has been shaping the environments we all move through?

“The Threshold of Other Spaces” is a panel conversation about who gets to build worlds. How do womxn designers navigate, process, and imagine new realities in the other spaces we created?

Join us LIVE on July 28th inside the XR Women Museum @xrwomenglobal: researchers, scenic designers, computational architects, and virtual curators in conversation across disciplines.

Panelists:
Paige Dansinger @paigedansinger
Biayna Bogosian @biaynabogosian
Binna Lee @_leebinna
Regina García @lareginagarcia

Moderated by:
Pei-Yu Hung @rosewellhung_

This event is a collaboration between  WID Chicago @wid_chicago, WID NYC @womenindesignnyc, and XR Women Museum.

Free to attend. Join us LIVE on the virtual XR Women Museum. Link in bio.

My late-June walk through Rotterdam — one of the most walkable cities I had always wanted to experience.

A city where well-preserved architectural history is beautifully juxtaposed with modern buildings rebuilt after World War II — and where one quote stayed with me:

“De omgeving van de mens is de medemens.”

“A person’s environment is their fellow human.”

— Jules Deelder.

And perhaps the most precious part of the trip was the solitude and quiet space I found in my airbnb.

I feel immensely privileged to have had the opportunity to travel here, and deeply grateful to my family.

The warmest June ever.

One of my notes on LLM and its impact on education amid the public debates in fall 2025.

A recent article written by Hannah Kim from Tech Policy Press, “For Students, the Process of ‘Becoming’ Is the Challenge No Chatbot Can Solve,” aligns with my perspective.

A thoughtful read—check out the article in the comment.

My retrospective on my writing experiences design manifesto, essays in media art history, thesis during the MFA DT years.

I was recently interviewed by Stef Hutka, PhD @stefhutka for an in-depth dialogue challenging the current “flat mind” design problems—those reductionist interface paradigms that constantly put embodiment aside. We dove deep into XR, spatial perception, and physical AI.

The Body as the First Interface.
The conversation centered on my research framework of the same name. To move past the “flat mind” trap, we must stop treating users as disembodied eyeballs and start designing for the whole somatic, sensorimotor human.

Bringing AI off the screen.
What does it look like to design physical AI that’s deeply connected to where and how it exists in the world? It means moving past generic, displaced chatbots and building intelligence that responds to environmental architecture and human movement. — I used “Nome”, physical AI as a case study that @katielim.id designed. @frog_design @womenindesignnyc 👏🏼

Expanding the frame.
This paradigm shift isn’t just about changing the product for our users—it forces us to expand the frame through which we see the world as designers. When the environment and the body become the canvas, our definition of experience design fundamentally evolves.

Thank you to Stef for holding space for this rich conversation and capturing my thoughts and design perspectives so well.
