Maxine Amadea Char arrived yesterday on 9/26/26 at 8:58 AM, a New Yorker, born on the same day as George Gershwin and Serena Williams.

In the womb she attended the opera and ballet, partied on the streets after listening to the Knicks win, and communicated with our cat through an advanced system of kicks and purrs.

She will grow up so lucky, because she will know all of you, artists and dancers and scientists and scholars and makers. We can’t wait for her to meet you all. taken in New York, New York by @_maxnc_

Just spent a week researching and making new choreography with the brilliant @jaiyachandra @cameronfikes1 and @simeondneeld, featuring genius dancers @juliadance__ @siennersss @_mioishikawa @quaba_ernest @thats_so_ragin @xlavvvy at “Institute Institute” a self-organized meeting of downtown and uptown that gives classically trained dancers early in their careers the chance to make work on experienced contemporary movement artists.

The process of making a dance is often the opposite of kinetic or flowing, but rather puttering around a room aimlessly trying to find what to do next. Every time I get to witness it I feel grateful, seeing something emerge through grit and trial and error and sheer vulnerability.

333 days ago, on May 2nd 2025, we went to City Hall and got married in the company of an artist, an actor, an it-girl, a dancer, and a skateboarder.

We didn’t tell everyone because we were fully intending on taking our time to plan a gigantic event where we invite everyone.

But now we have the extremely happy news that we are expecting a new addition to our little family, a girl, this October, and so a gigantic multifaceted event probably isn’t happening for us anytime soon.

We love all of you and would love to see you soon.

Just finished two incredible weeks working with this group of genius artists at the Fall session of the @nychoreographicinstitute at @nycballet.

@dayoungjung87 is a brilliant and powerful choreographer, equally capable in creating moments of subtlety and explosion. You all are going to see more incredible things from her so soon.

These dancers are the best in the fucking world. @emmavonenck @wiamilliams @kj.takahashi_ @laurrencollett @kennardhenson @julesmabie @peytonggin @xanderperone are all miracles, absolute monsters of art and technique. Go see them live when you can and scream for them. Advocate for them to get paid way more. Hollywood friends- put them in your movies.

Today marks the end of an incredible two weeks working as a dramaturg at @nychoreographicinstitute. The Institute has long been my favorite dance event in NYC.

Getting to be a part of It was an absolute dream, made even dreamier by how talented and wonderful the great @lucasvalente.dance was to work with as a choreographer. I got a front row seat to a genius at work, equal parts tender, ferocious, and virtuosic.

The whole cohort was incredible, @juliadance__’s work is rich, detailed, beautiful, and intricate. I kept noticing completely different brilliant points of light with each run. @fran.diazzz__ created a gorgeous, intense, miracle of a piece that made me want to throw my sneakers on the stage in celebration. If you ever have the opportunity to see the work of these three choreographers, BUY TICKETS AND GO.

Most importantly, who knows if they will ever read this because this is the most I’ve ever written in a post, but I will never forget the 20 dancers we worked with on this piece. I can’t even tag them all because of the instagram limit, but they are incredible artists and people. To the artistic directors who follow me, if you ever come across these names, HIRE THEM.

There will be films of the dances from the great @qwharton soon!
