Indigenous Peoples Day - today and everyday acknowledge the land you live on and the history that lead us here. All parts.

As folks living in the United States (and other parts of North, Central, and South America and the world) knowing and acknowledging whose land we live on is a small way to honor and respect the
Indigenous Peoples of the land we live on.

Start by reading through the slides and then return to slide 6 and comment below with whose land you are currently residing on. Then start to learn about the people - who they were, who they ARE. And be sure to support Indigenous folks: creators, artists, activists, etc and fairly compensate them for their time and work.
———-
I, Michelle Farrell, reside on Pawtucket Land. I acknowledge the land and the Pawtucket People to respect and honor them and their land as well as to be mindful of the harm colonialism has and continues to do on the Indigenous People of the United States and the world. The erasure of Indigneous history began as the European settlers/colonizers, my ancestors, stepped onto the land and took it upon themselves to not only steal the land and exploit the Indigenous Peoples of Massachusetts and North American, but also they also aimed to disrespect and erase their names; making up new names for the Pawtucket tribe (and others). Growing up, I was unaware that I was on Pawtucket land - all Native Americans of the North East were lumped into one group, the Wampanoag, and also always referred to as historical peoples and histories - not as contemporary and living peoples. This land acknowledgement is my commitment to support Indigenous peoples and their voices in the struggle against systemic oppression and for human rights as well as to push against the canceling and erasure of their history, their stories, their culture and their present. - Michelle Farrell (she/her)

Back to school teacher tired is a special kind of tired! 🥱

So during this time, our workouts, even if we love them, can feel completely outside our capacity- physically and mentally.

And there’s nothing wrong with taking a week off while you adjust. But if you want to keep moving as self care and to keep the routine and consistency like I did this week, these are some ideas you can try.

1. Reduce your load - take your weight down. This is probably not the ideal time to go for PRs.

2. Reduce the number of reps and/or sets. Reducing the volume can help reduce the physical fatigue and the time it takes to to complete the workout.

3. Increase rest between sets.

4. Complete less workouts; maybe instead of 3-4 days, aim for 2.

5. Try a more low-key movement practice like restorative or gentle yoga

Throughout this week, it was mentally a challenge to get moving; but knowing I was “deloading” my workouts’ load and volume helped me get out there and get them done.

What we don’t want to do is burn ourselves out before the school year even begins, so shifting ourselves to more manageable workouts for the time being can be a really be an impactful shift to the longevity our fitness routine.

Share this info with a fellow teacher who could use some support with deloading their workouts during a busy school week.

Stay hydrated, my teacher friends.

I know the day is long and can get away from us, and bathroom breaks can be - tricky 🫣 but sipping on that water helps us have better energy and vocal chords for all the welcome back to school festivities. 😘

Share with a teacher friend who could use this reminder.

How hydrated are you today?

Trust me, this is the easiest way to prep your meals for the week so that you’re well fed and nourished to be energized and on your toes for your new students (and everything else you have going on in life!)

What would you add as sides to your chicken?

I get it. The transition to the new school year feels like a great time to commit to healthy habits.

And it is!

Feeling strong, well fueled, and well rested benefits how we show up for our students and ourselves each day.

But ya need to calm down with trying to do the most during the most exhausting month of a teacher’s school year.

Trying to do all the things all the time is just not going be achievable at most times of life, but especially at back to school time.

Our energy and time is significantly depleted from meetings, professional development, early wake ups and oh, managing and engaging with a classroom(s) of young humans.

Instead of trying to overhaul your entire fitness and routine, I invite you to pick one or two “big rock” actions that will be achievable to implement consistently that will make a big impact.

These might be:
- 2 full body strength workouts a week
- Adding protein and fiber to most meals
- Taking 1 hour on the weekend to prep some simple grab and go meals for the week
- Putting your grading away before dinner time
- Committing to leaving work most days at contractual end time
- Adding a simple and short restorative yoga pose or sequence to your bedtime routine
- Taking a 20-30 minute walk outside 2-3 days a week
- Saying no thank you to additional optional teaching activities that don’t light you up to say yes to

Of course, what you decide to add (or subtract) is individualized to you and your goals.

Not sure where to start or focus? Comment BTS in the comments or send me a DM to schedule a 15 minute consult to chat 🤗

We don’t need to be trying to do more workouts and complicated, long meal prepping during the first month of back to school

This is the time to do less. Optimize your recovery (sleep and relaxation), make your workouts efficient and doable for consistency’s sake, and keep your meals simple. No teacher wants to spend their entire Sunday afternoon prepping meals for the week.

I know as educators we’re all always trying to do the most, but when we’re already doing the most settling into the school year, now is the time for self care that is meeting us where we’re at; not making it more difficult.
