I’m honored to be part of the silent auction for the social service center I used to work at @ltsc.cdc. The best part of my 20’s happened there 🫶🏼. They provide services to improve the lives of underserved individuals and families and promote the equitable development of ethnic communities through affordable housing, senior services, small business counseling, and more! This series was born from an unfortunate episode on my last day of grad school, where I was badly bullied by a faculty member of @otismfa. It sent me into a deep depression and anxiety that I sometimes feared for my life. When I saw a white woman with grey curly hair, I would get internal rashes and have to leave the space. In the following months, I didn’t really talk to anyone about this incident and I tried to appear normal. Eventually, I got better as I continued to be unconditionally supported and nourished by my friendships and loved ones (my friend circle is an actual Barbieland!)

I create these pieces to make space for people to not feel judged, in whatever feeling, sensation, configuration they want to be in. That the body they live in is being upheld, cared for, treasured. The strange embrace is sometimes what we need, or what we can muster for another. Through all of these daily small embraces—which I think is the most important role of being human—we find shelter and community in our body. Even in challenging positions, we can find ways to let another—or ourselves—be at ease. Through this practice, we build the architecture of gentle living. by @_mikayokota
