1,850 miles.

Of all the options I had for college, why this far? Why UCLA?

My answer: why not.

When I received my acceptance, choosing the University of California, Los Angeles honestly wasn’t difficult. Less than 2% of out-of-state applicants are admitted to this university, and I was one of them. Now, what did take an adjustment was stepping out on faith. Leaving New Orleans. Leaving my village. Leaving everything I found familiar. But these last four years have shown me that some of the greatest growth happens when you’re willing to get uncomfortable.

UCLA gave me opportunities I never could have imagined and an extended family in an entirely different region of the country. But to my family who made all of this possible in the first place, know that every phone call, every text, and every prayer carried me through moments when I needed it most. No matter the distance, y’all never stopped showing up for me.

These last four years challenged me, stretched me, humbled me, and helped shape the man I’ve become. I’m grateful for all that these four years have given me, and in spite of it all, I’m walking into my next chapter with my head held high …

Rummaging through my dad’s closet, I found my first glimpses of that Black and Old Gold. I never could have pictured that those colors would one day become part of my own story.

Coming to UCLA, I found Distinguished Men, united in bond. I chose UCLA seeking opportunity, and I am grateful to have found a brotherhood that enriched my village. The 79th House instilled in me true tenacity, intention, discipline and grit. To my Dean, Assistant Dean, Line Brothers, Prophytes, Pins, Neophytes, how could I ever say “thank you”? I can attribute the man that I’ve developed into today to this Chapter. I am a true product of all that you have poured into me. The Gifted and Zealous Gamma Xi Chapter gave me more than a set responsibility. More than a role played in running the Yard. More than the whistle I have. And surely more than the nights that covered me. It gave me a Legacy. My name is forever etched in the ranks of this Chapter’s Lineage.

And, to the developing lineage, that I played a role in molding, my Youth. For having firmness of mind and spirit; showcasing unyielding courage and determination in the face of hardship. Know that I will forever be immensely proud of y’all. I leave my many roles held throughout my two years in the Chapter knowing the current state of Gamma Xi is in the most capable hands. UCLA, the Chapter, your dreams, your futures, man the whole goddam world truly is yours.

At the end of the day, the day has to end. College Days surely do Swiftly Pass.
