I’ve been involved in radio somewhere in the world for almost half my life, starting with a midnight show on @933cfmu in 2009 as a way to learn how to DJ as I had no turntables of my own. I’ve realized that my favourite DJs are all people who’s shows and sets sound like internal monologues. Many of them also got their start in radio - with a more studied, introspective style that comes from learning how to play to an invisible audience. I generally prefer slower tempos, because I like trying to listen to the space between the notes, but to me genre, tempo, vibe, and all of those categories are just aspects of a greater whole, not rigid parameters.

First N10.AS show was a guest spot on Innerstate 87 back in 2018, recorded in the basement of Dalston Superstore (a landmark gay venue in London). At the time I had no idea I’d be living in Montréal a year later and part of an important kind of community, much less having run a show (either as myself or Days of Steam) for 4 years and developed a podcast and event series. I doubt that it would have been as affordable or doable in a larger city more apt to judge one’s art by its return of investment rather than anything you can’t put a price tag on. Spaces like n10.as are necessary for the arts community (that MTL loves to market) to be able to express and learn. Whether digital or terrestrial, community radio is an important bastion of expression at a time when censorship is on the rise, even as access to the means of communication has never been easier. Damn right I’m passionate about this.

Dubwise excursions, occulted downtempo, Masters at Work, salsa-tinged house: our third @archivio_records in-store is all about tracking the groove wherever it leads.

This Tuesday, WKCR Friday-night DJ, and Tracker team member @isadoraevers kicks things off with a soft spot for classic NYC house with a little Latin swing. Then The Hefker Girl (@navigatingthefartworld)—Tracker visual director—joins forces with Groove Trackers veteran @_neonlichter for a more sideways trip through dub, downtempo and leftfield oddities. An in-store is a fine place to unearth rarities... a Funktion-One sound system is an even better place to hear them properly.

Playing Out Of Time with @johnvon Seggern is up for @eastvillageradio -- a pleasure to have such wide ranging and erudite discussion on his histories working with Jon Hassell in his group during the Pentimento years, early technological leaps in computer DJing, being a touring bassist for one of the biggest global pop stars by many metrics, and his application of Fourth World principles into his own works. Show features excerpts from the latest album Music Is Invisible (out now on @ndeya_records), much of an earlier Hassell performance around the City: Works Of Fiction years in 1989 - with Brian Eno at the mixing desk - and some of John's other work I could find including a Jackie Cheung YouTube rip (a necessary sacrilege in quality).

Jetlagged in the booth on Sunday for @superiorelevation, moving from frequency to freakquency via dub techno, driving minimal, tech house swingers, cut up house, and a slap bass groove that should be illegal (swipe through for terrible air guitar and an A+ grade stank-face). An afternoon of introspective sonics and good conversation from @perkopair (with the first four tracks from me) on Playing Out Of Time in the @eastvillageradio studio / outside-world-amplification-booth (why do the Hatzolah ambulances ALWAYS pass by when the discussion gets profound?). Fourth world experiments from 80s Seattle, ambient that makes pictures fall of walls, Manitoban loud-quiet-loud, classic voices in earnest mode (Dearie, Peacock) and don't give a fuck mode (Dylan), echoes of the West Country that reverberate across time, and a few forthcoming and unreleased numbers on @f__e__l__t (plus an unknown number from someone who may or may not be playing at months end, but I'm sworn to secrecy and my lips are sealed). Most recent @n10.as is up, tracklist below, channelling my Global Underground past (with some the few 12”s I have from the mixes that stood the test of time), plus recent grips + flashbacks to tracks with the inimitable @primopreems on Playing Out Of Time @eastvillageradio last week, including a Ken Ishii mix of a minimal (or mnml? late 00’s were wild) 12” found in a coffee shop across the street from work with a Joey Beltram mix on the flip, plus dub techno/tribal mix of a Jlo track that was a childhood obsession (the synthesised bass on play may have been a Prince echo but it never left my head from 99 onward)

Starting to slowly transcribe all of the interviews I've done for radio and putting them up on the website /// first one up is with Tony Price ( @maximumexposureinc ) from December 2024 on @eastvillageradio for Playing Out Of Time, on his album/tone poem Requiem For The Ontario Science Centre. We both grew up equidistant from the place and felt an affinity with the same abstract aspects, as much about the building itself as the knowledge contained within. Transcripts under the 'words' subsection, along with track listing, context, ephemera, and the like // including thoughts on prospective futures, public space as public good, brutalism, architectural harmony with nature, Toronto esoterica, library music, hauntology, red neon arcades, the archive, and at least six uses of the word 'tangible' in some format. 🔗 in the usual place. taken in Ontario Science Centre by @_neonlichter
