📖 New Book Release!🎉💃🏼
‘This Isn’t the Story I Wanted’
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I’m having a missing Dad day. Like, deep in my soul missing.

Ya know?

And while I do indeed know exactly where he is… I miss him here.

His voice. How he said my name. His laugh.

Breakfasts at Stacked on Saturday. Or Thursday. Or whenever the mood struck.

Dear Dads of Daughters….

Leave the voice message.
Send the text.

Your words matter. Your voice matters.
May she always know how you feel about her.

She’ll carry you with her forever.
🩷

PS… how wonderful to know exactly where you are Dad✝️

What do you do when the story you’re living looks nothing like the one you prayed for? 💔

There is a kind of grief we don’t talk about enough. The grief of what could have been. The dreams that didn’t unfold the way we imagined. The life we thought we were stepping into.

And for foster and adoptive parents, this grief can be especially complicated.

We can love our children deeply, be grateful for the calling God has placed on our lives, and STILL grieve the unexpected losses and challenges along the way.

Grief and gratitude can coexist. And acknowledging what hurts doesn’t mean we’ve stopped trusting God.

This week on Called to Love, I’m joined by author, licensed therapist, and social worker @_nicolelangman for a powerful conversation about grieving the story we didn’t want while learning to trust the God who stays.

We’re talking about the grief that often goes unrecognized, how to process loss without getting stuck in it, and how to help our children navigate their own grief with compassion and hope.

Because sometimes faith doesn’t look like having all the answers. Sometimes it looks like trusting that God is still good when the story is nothing like we expected.

I loved this interview with Nicole Langman, author of This Isn’t the Story I Wanted on Episode 358 of the Sparking Wholeness podcast.

We discuss the losses we rarely name as grief, the “casserole code” and why some losses get community support while others don’t, the loss of stress resilience in perimenopause, shame and the comparison game, spiritual bypassing versus genuine faith-filled support, the difference between over-identifying with a wound and minimizing it, and practical tools for processing grief in the middle of an ordinary day.

You’ll also learn why naming a loss out loud is the first courageous step toward healing it, how blood sugar and protein intake directly affect your capacity to process grief, and two simple physical tools (a grounding scent and a floor-to-standing movement) that calm the amygdala in real time.

I lost my second parent yesterday.

And I write to you from a window seat in the exit row somewhere above Vancouver.

Trying to get home.

Heaven comes closer when people we love are with Jesus.

And my precious Dad. The one my brother calls the “North Star”, crossed into Heaven yesterday.

And I just don’t know where to put that.

He’s in the presence of Jesus. He’s been greeted by my Mom.

It’s beautiful and soothing. It’s captivating when I think about it.

But here we are.
Feeling kind of lost.

Knowing this is good.
And also so very sad.

Knowing that Dad is exactly where he always wanted to be.

And also, we would give anything for one more chat. Another laugh with him. To hear him tell a story. Say our name.

It’s both, isn’t it.
Sorrow and joy can co-exist.

We have this hope. We have this deep soul knowing that one day we will be together again. Laughing belly laughs like no earthly belly laugh we ever knew.

And he’ll say my name.
And his eyes will sparkle.

And he won’t be broken. Or longing for his bride.

Because she’ll be right there.

And the glory of Heaven will wrap us all up in the gift of eternity with the One Who made it all possible.

Jesus.
The only Way.
The only Truth.

The only Life.

But here is hard right now.
It will never be the same now.

And that aches.

So we wait for the day. The day we get to be with them again.

It’s like part of us goes with them. Doesn’t it.

And the part of us that’s here still, well… what more can we do than honor them with what’s left.

To do right by them. We live and love and reflect Jesus. Like they did.

We carry their torch.

Death, you’re a temporary problem.

Conquered by the Cross and the empty grave. And the Man Who broke all the rules to have us with Him.

Thank You Jesus for that. And for parents who pointed us to You.

May my life do the same.

And so, here I am.
Window seat. Exit row.

Between Heaven and earth.

In so many ways, making my way Home.

Thinking so much about Home.

Grateful for a loving earthly Dad who showed me the kindness of a pursuing Heavenly Father I can’t live without.

In my life, may I represent both well.

On Episode 358 of the Sparking Wholeness podcast, I sat down with Nicole Langman, therapist and author of the book, “This Isn’t the Story I Wanted.”

We had such an in depth conversation about loss! She said something I haven’t stopped thinking about: the shoulds keep shame alive.

We should ourselves to death. I should be over this by now. I should be handling this better. I shouldn’t even be struggling with this.

Nicole put words to something I live out myself, especially when shame creeps in around my own story: shame thrives in isolation, and the moment we name what we’re actually feeling instead of what we think we’re allowed to feel, it starts to lose its grip.

If you’ve been should-ing yourself all week, this episode is for you. Full conversation is live now, wherever you get podcasts!

If you’ve ever grieved something that nobody else seemed to notice, comment a 💛.

I see you. I understand. I know what that’s like.

The lack of support & silence after her divorce was loud. In today’s episode, my friend, speaker, author and therapist @_nicolelangman shares about her experience rebuilding her life after an unwanted divorce.

“What I needed wasn’t a perfect fix,” she says.
“I needed someone to say, ‘This is heartbreaking.’”

“I needed people to show up without making me ask.”

“I needed presence more than advice.”

We know how to bring casseroles when someone dies. But what about the griefs that don’t come with a funeral?

Divorce. Estrangement. Infertility. Diagnosis.
Broken dreams.

Those losses matter too.

Maybe the most loving thing we can do is stop trying to explain pain away and just sit in it with someone.

This might not be the story you wanted.
But it is the one God wants to meet you in.

Nicole‘s new book is out now!

Friends!! It’s here! 🎉💃🏼🩷

This Isn’t the Story I Wanted is released today!

It’s a deep-end read for the woman who’s living in the life-rearranging undoing that took her hopes and dreams and turned them upside down.

I know you know what I’m talking about when I say not all grief is related to death.

And if you and I could sit down over a warm cup of goodness, or some sort of iced coffee and chat this out, I’m certain we’d find ourselves digging into the story we never planned on.

We’d laugh a bit, we’d cry some, we’d chat about healing ideas, and then we’d do what good friends do together, we’d bring it all to the feet of Jesus.

May this be that. May this book meet you exactly where you are, give you a laugh, a place to cry, some things to help work through what you’re going through… and ultimately, a friend to kneel with you at the feet of the One Who hasn’t put down His pen.

I’m in it with you🩷

If you've been carrying grief that "doesn't count" because nobody died, you're not making it up. Author and therapist, Nicole Langman (@_nicolelangman) said something on this week's episode of the That's Just What I Needed podcast that hit me hard:

All loss is loss.

Loss means grief.

Betrayal, family addiction, a prodigal child, infertility, estrangement, an unwelcome diagnosis, disability, divorce, abandonment, aging bodies, death of a dream - grief shows up in so many ways.

And the hardest part? We try to minimize it with "At least". But "at least" doesn't heal the pain.

Being seen does.

Maybe the first step in healing is naming grief honestly.

Maybe the next step is to stop the spiral and ask, "what now, Lord?"

Maybe healing starts when we let ourselves grieve without shame.

Save this for the days you need the reminder: you can be hurting and still gave hope. 💛
